INTERLIBRARY BORROWING SUBMIT
A REQUEST
The Interlibrary Loan service obtains materials from other libraries which
are either not owned by the University's libraries or not available. UMass
faculty, staff and students holding a valid ID card are eligible to use
the ILL service. Materials which are owned by the UMass Libraries but
are non-circulating will not be borrowed by the Resource Access Department.
Please check the UMASS Catalog
and the 4 COLLEGE Catalog
before submitting an Interlibrary Loan request. Massachusetts residents
who have UMass library cards are not eligible to use ILL. Local public
libraries can provide similar service.
REQUESTING MATERIAL SUBMIT
A REQUEST
All ILL requests must be submitted via the online form. A separate request
must be submitted for each book or journal article requested. Each patron
is required to fill out the 'First Time User Registration'. A user name
and password will have to be selected. This registration sets up the ILLiad
account and needs only be filled out once.
PLEASE NOTE: INTERLIBRARY LOAN TAKES TIME.
Interlibrary loan can take from a few days to several weeks to be filled.
The material format, availability of the material, the location of the
lending library, and time of year are all factors in how quickly an item
will be received.
Please check the UMASS
Catalog and the 4 COLLEGE
Catalog before submitting an ILL request. If the material you need is
a book and is found in the 4 college catalog, you may use the "get" function
and the material will be delivered to the circulation desk at the Du Bois
Library. If the material you need is in a journal held at a 4 college
library, Interlibrary Loan can obtain it for you, or you can visit the
library yourself to retrieve the article.
RECEIVING MATERIALS
Articles can be delivered electronically or sent directly to you at the
address you specify. Books must be picked up at the library. Notifications
for books can be sent to you by email. You may also check the status of
ILL requests on the ILLiad main menu in the 'Review Requests' section.
ILL returnables (all items except photocopies) can be picked up and returned
to the Du Bois Library "check-out" desk in the Entrance Lobby.
LOAN PERIODS AND RESTRICTIONS
Loan periods are established by the lending library and vary between two
and four weeks. These loan periods must be respected. One renewal is sometimes
possible but this is at the discretion of the lending library. Our standard
renewal is two weeks from the original due date. Renewals should be requested
on or before the original due date and may be requested via the ILLiad
form in the main menu under the 'View/Renew Checked out Items' of the
Review Requests. Renewals may also be requested by phone (545-0553) or
in person.
Lending libraries sometimes require that their materials be used only
in the library, or that they not be photocopied.
ILL will not waive such restrictions for individuals.
BORROWERS WHO DISREGARD ILL DUE DATES AND RESTRICTIONS JEOPARDIZE
THEIR BORROWING PRIVILEGES, BOTH WITH INTERLIBRARY LOAN AND WITH THE CIRCULATION
DEPARTMENT.
FEES
There is no charge to you for most materials obtained through interlibrary
loan. The library absorbs any charges which we have paid to obtain book
loans or photocopies. However, some documents can be obtained only by
purchase. In such cases you would be notified and, subject to your approval
or prepayment, charged the purchase price of the document on a cost recovery
basis. Please be aware that although we have many agreements with other
libraries which allow for the free exchange of materials, sending a request
is labor intensive, and we often must pay from $10.00 - $25.00 to another
library per transaction.
DISSERTATION ORDERING
Patrons wishing to purchase a dissertation should order them directly
through Dissertation Express or by phone at 800-521-0600.
REQUEST LIMITS
We ask that you limit your requests to 10 per week if possible. This ensures
fair and equitable service to ALL of our users by assuring that no one
person or research project monopolizes our services at any given time.
Please contact ILL (545-0553 or ill@library.umass.edu)
if you have any questions.
