UMASS AMHERST LIBRARIES
ANNOUNCES ELECTRONIC-ONLY JOURNALS PROPOSAL

Amherst, MA - Over the past several years the UMass Amherst Libraries' online collections have grown considerably. This growth reflects changes in academic publishing, which is rapidly moving toward online access, and the increasing demand from our users, both faculty and students, for more electronic access to scholarly material. Beginning in 2008, the UMass Amherst Libraries plans to convert 955 print journal subscriptions to electronic-only (e-only) access if such access is offered by the publisher. Print issues of these journals will no longer be received in the Libraries beginning January 2008. The Faculty Senate Research Library Council endorsed this proposal at their meeting of May 17, 2007.

The benefits of e-only journals include:

  • 24-hour desktop access
• Multiple users can access an issue at the same time
  • Searching is faster and more flexible
• Expanded Electronic Reserves service

Only those electronic journals meeting several conditions-such as assurances that the online content meets or exceeds the print edition and that archival rights provide perpetual access to the volumes/years subscribed-will be converted. The complete list of conditions can be viewed at the Libraries E-Only Journal Policy. The list of 955 titles is available for review. Feedback on the suitability of converting these titles to e-only or retaining them in print is requested by October 22, 2007, and should be directed to Jay Schafer, Director of Libraries (jschafer@library.umass.edu); Leslie Button, Associate Director for Collection Services (button@library.umass.edu); or the Library liaison. The Library is dedicated to providing resources most needed by faculty and students to support the teaching and research mission of the campus. This transition to e-only journals helps sustain a competitive research environment.
