Internationally Acclaimed Garden Designers

Amherst, MA - On Sunday, October 3, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries will host the 12th Annual Fall Reception in the Cape Cod Lounge, Student Union, at UMass Amherst. The keynote speakers, authors Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd, will give a talk "To Eat: Murder and Vegetables in a Bucolic Setting." The program starts at 2:30 p.m.; the event is free and open to the public.
Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd are renowned garden designers, authors, internationally acclaimed lecturers, and co-owners of North Hill, a garden in Readsboro, Vermont. Their books include Our Life in Gardens; Elements of Design; A Year at North Hill; Living Seasonally; Annuals and Tender Plants for North American Gardens; Roses: A Celebration; and Annuals for Connoisseurs.
"Eck and Winterrowd are funny, affectionate, wise, and snobbish exactly when you want them to be," says Dominique Browning in her New York Times review of Our Life in Gardens. "It's in the descriptions of the day-to-day labor of gardening that this book is so moving."
As part of the fall reception program, Ruth Levens '48, G'50, member of the Friends of the Library Board of Trustees, will be honored with the 2010 Siegfried Feller Award for Outstanding Service. This award, established in 1998, is given annually to an individual who has made outstanding volunteer contributions to create awareness and build support for the UMass Amherst Libraries.
UMass Catering will provide refreshments. The authors' books will be available for sale by the University Store and a book signing will follow the event.
