UMASS AMHERST LIBRARIES HOST
EXHIBIT: “FROM GAY LIBERATION TO UPRIDE AND QUEERFEST:
FOUR DECADES OF LGBT ACTIVISM AND VISIBILITY AT UMASS AMHERST”
Amherst, MA – The UMass Amherst Libraries present an exhibit, “From Gay Liberation to UPride and Queerfest: Four Decades of LGBT Activism and Visibility at UMass Amherst,” on the Lower Level of Du Bois Library through January 14, 2011. The exhibit includes two events on October 20 in the same location: a panel discussion on LGBT history from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and an opening reception from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The exhibit documents forty years of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender activism and visibility at UMass Amherst. A variety of materials are included in the exhibit ranging from an entry in the 1971 Index regarding the Student Homophile League and the Gay Liberation Front, to posters, flyers, buttons, and memos of the Program for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Concerns (1985) and the Stonewall Center (1995 to present).
The panelists include Bambi Gauthier, local LGBT community activist; Bet Power, Director of the Sexual Minorities Archives and Founder of the East Coast FTM Group; and Allen Young, author of Out of the Closets: Voices of Gay Liberation.
The exhibit and events are co-sponsored by UMass Amherst’s Stonewall Center and are part of the 25th Anniversary LGBT Series for the Stonewall Center. The Center provides support, advocacy, and programming for LGBT and allied students, staff, and faculty at UMass Amherst and for the larger Pioneer Valley.
