Libraries Lend Support to arXiv

UMASS AMHERST LIBRARIES LEND SUPPORT TO arXiv
Amherst, MA – The University of Massachusetts ranks 159th among the top 200 users of arXiv. Pronounced “archive,” arXiv is a highly automated electronic archive and distribution server that provides open access to over 630,000 electronic preprints of scientific papers in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, and quantitative finance and statistics. Initiated and managed by scientists, for scientists, arXiv has set and maintained a new standard for innovative, open access scholarly communications and, by so doing, effectively challenged the publishing environment’s status quo for nearly 20 years.
This fall, the UMass Amherst Libraries contributed $2,880 for the ongoing support of arXiv to help ensure that it remains a viable distribution service for the millions of scholars who depend on it.
When arXiv moved to Cornell University from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library in 2001, the Cornell University Library provided the bulk of arXiv’s $400,000 annual operating budget. As with most academic libraries, Cornell University Library is facing significant budget cuts and is looking for ways to share the cost of this community resource. Since the top 200 heaviest user institutions account for about 75% of institutionally identifiable downloads, Cornell is asking for voluntary support in the form of an optional fee based on annual use.
UMass Amherst Libraries is participating in this voluntary program to support this valuable resource that is heavily used by UMass Amherst faculty, researchers, and students. In this way, UMass Amherst Libraries is supporting the important concept of open access to scholarly information and helping to assure that all submitters and users continue to have free access to arXiv.
