UMASS AMHERST LIBRARIES
TO REPLACE ELEVATORS IN DU BOIS
Amherst, MA – The UMass Amherst Libraries have initiated a project to replace all five elevators in the Du Bois Library with new equipment, controls, and cars. One elevator at a time will be taken out of service and each elevator assembly replacement will take approximately 12 to 16 weeks. The project is expected to be completed in 2012.
Additionally, all elevator doors that were not installed under the original construction will be improved, and all five elevators will be able to respond to calls on all occupied floors of the library. There will be ancillary improvements by installing new doors at the elevator lobbies on all floors in order to properly compartmentalize the lobbies in case of fire.
The greatest disruption observed by patrons will be accessing floors 2 through 15 while Du Bois Library is reduced to two cars from its customary three for this elevator bank. The first car, elevator #5, is expected to be complete and returned to operation by the end of the year. The plan is then to remove elevator #4 from operation and replace it during the spring semester.
