Translations of a work that
are classed in the same number as the original work normally follow the
original text in an alphabetical arrangement by language. This is
achieved by using successive Cutter numbers. The number "1" is inserted
in order to avoid interference with other titles by the same author.
The Translation Table provides a general guide for arranging translations
alphabetically by language (UMass makes an exception; see note at end of
Translation Table).
The numbers in the Translation
Table are not strictly reserved for the languages listed. They are only
meant to be a guide for alphabetizing languages. The most important
consideration is what is already in the shelflist. If the language
of the work being cataloged is not listed in the table, use a number that
would place the language in the proper alphabetical position in the shelflist
and/or in the table. It is permissible to use a number in the table for
a language other than that listed, if the number has not been used yet.
For example, a Chinese translation may be given the Cutter number .x12;
a Hebrew translation, .x15 or .x16; a Polish translation, .x16 or .x17;
depending on what has already been used. (In other words, do not
assume that you must expand the Cutter further (.x125, .x155, .x165) just
because those languages are not listed in the table).
If a work consists of translations
into two languages, base the Cutter number on the first language used in
the description.
Do not use the Translation
Table when the main entry is under a corporate body or conference heading
or when there are specific provisions for translations in the schedules.
In the past, LC frequently
omitted the numeral "1" from the Cutter number representing the translation,
e.g., .B3, original work; .B33, English translation; .B34, French translation;
etc. LC has discontinued this practice except in cases where the pattern
has already been established in the shelflist.
