Determination of size

The size designation of an item is determined by the application of the table above to the size that is recorded in the physical description area of the item's cataloging record. However, no matter what the height of an item, a depth of 29 cm. or more dictates the addition of Folio to an item's call number, even when cataloging rules do not allow the recording of depth in the physical description (i.e., when the width is more than half the height).

Shelving policies

Shelving policies do not necessarily dictate a size designation. For example, a book with a height of 30 cm. going to a location (such as the Main Library stacks) that intershelves all books under 40 cm. will still be marked with a plus (+) both on the book and in the bibliographic and/or item record(s).

Continuations, serials, and classed-together series
Individual volumes of a continuation, a serial, or a series should given an oversize designation, if needed. Ignore the presence or absence of such a designation in the series authority record, the bibliographic record, or any other volumes. Do not attempt to create consistency of treatment.
Binding
Variations in size due to binding after cataloging are ignored. However, if during cataloging the cataloger puts an item into an oversize envelope binder, the cataloger should insert a 590 note in the bibliographic record to that effect, as well as following the procedures outlined above.
