Ref. Consideration
Return to top of page
1. All pre-1970 imprint monographic titles will be cataloged to Du Bois rather than Science, unless they are specifically designated for Science ("Cat. to Science," "Science Ref." or "Science Repl." in library notes on packing slip or order record).
2. Only monographs in the English language will be cataloged to Science, regardless of date or place of publication, unless they are specifically designated for Science (notes on packing slip or order record). EXCEPTION: French language books on mathematics will be cataloged to Science.
3. Works in class M (chiefly scores) are given bibliographic location code uam, and item location code uams, as if they were being cataloged to the old Music Library; "Score" is no longer printed on the call number labels. Works in M2-3 ("monuments of music" and composers' collected works, chiefly scores) are given bibliographic location code uam, and item location code uamh, as if they were being cataloged to the old Music Library Monuments Room; "Score" is no longer printed on the call number labels. Works in classes ML-MT (chiefly books, some scores) are given bibliographic and item location code uam, as if they were being cataloged to the old Music Library; "Music" is not printed on the call number labels. "Score" is no longer printed on the call number labels of MT items in score format.
4. The State Geological Survey publications for the following states are the only ones which will be cataloged to Science; the rest will be cataloged to Du Bois. However, if the publication is a serial, it should not be cataloged to Science automatically, but should be referred to the Science Librarian for consideration and decision.
Arizona Massachusetts California New Hampshire Colorado
New Mexico
Connecticut New York Maine
Rhode Island
Vermont
5. Do not catalog to Science:
However, do catalog to Science:Anecdotal travels
Biographies
Historical, sociological, etc. atlases
Less scholarly works (understandable to an average reader)
Popular treatments
Rare books and manuscripts
Unscholarly picture booksAnything "AA to Science," even in the above categories, with a "Notify" or a "Hold" for someone whose address is a science or engineering department.
When in doubt, use the shelf labeled "Science Library Consultation Shelf," located in the Information Processing Department, on a brick pillar opposite the Fishbowl window and opposite a filing cabinet. A Science Librarian comes over regularly, decides on a location for anything we have placed upon this shelf, and notes the decision for each book on its routing slip. After decisions have been made, the books are removed and cataloged. Please initial the routing slip if you'd like an item returned to you for cataloging.
Cataloging Manual Contents PageBooks put on this shelf may have DLC copy, contributed copy, or no copy; they may be titles new to the library or they may be A/Cs, E/Ds or D/Ds.6. Works in classes N and TR in the Du Bois Library are shelved on the Art Floor. They need an item record location of: uaub (displays as UM/Art).
