INNOPAC SEARCH INDEXES:  MARC FIELDS AND SUBFIELDS
 
 
 

Innopac offers a number of searches that enable users to locate bibliographic and item record information within the system. This memorandum (1) presents tables that define which MARC fields and subfields are included in each search index, and (2) presents a list of MARC fields in numerical order with information on which searches may be used to access them.

The LC CALL NUMBER search index includes LC-type call numbers taken from 090 fields in item records. In most instances, an item record field 090 will correspond to a bibliographic record field 050 or 090, but these bibliographic record fields themselves are not indexed, nor are they maintained.

The OTHER CALL NUMBER search index includes free-text call numbers taken from 099 fields in item records. In most instances, an item record field 099 will correspond to a bibliographic record field 099, but the bibliographic record field itself is not indexed, nor is it maintained.

Government Documents (SuDocs) call numbers are indexed in Innopac exactly as entered in the 086 field of the bibliographic record, including spacing and all punctuation, but with a space inserted between the first (alpha) and second (numeric) element if not already present. In general, SuDocs numbers are entered with a space between any [letter][numeral] combination (for example:  Y[space]4.En[space] 2/3:101-109). Subfield 2 (the code which identifies the government document list from which the number is assigned) is not indexed.

When searching by SuDocs call number, the presence or absence of spacing between the first two elements (i.e., [letter(s)] [numeral(s)]) is ignored, but beyond the last digit of the second element all spacing and punctuation must be keyed exactly as it was entered into the 086 field in order to retrieve a record directly.

Exceptions: If the first element has imbedded punctuation, or if the second element is not numeric, then spacing and punctuation need to match the 086 field exactly from the first character.
