POLICY ON CATALOGING CD-ROMs

This policy pertains to all CD-ROMs acquired by the University Library except those that are treated as accompanying material to a monograph or serial and those that are in the Government Documents Collection. All CD-ROMs (monographs and serials) covered by this policy will be fully cataloged, but normally not classified. CD-ROMs may be designated for the library network, mounted on stand-alone stations in the Reference Dept. of the Du Bois Library or in the reference departments of the branch libraries, or cataloged to the general collections.CD-ROMs of a serial nature will have attached check-in records and single “dummy” item records for each location.
CD-ROMs of a monographic nature will have attached item records.
- Call number field will be blank.
- Location will be UM/Library Network.
2. CD-ROMs ON STAND ALONE STATIONS IN REFERENCE DEPARTMENTS
- Call number field will have CD-ROM [with no accession number]
- Location will be the appropriate location for the reference department in which the stand-alone is located.
- A serial CD-ROM for a reference department will have a MORE INFO note in the check-in record reading: Inquire at the Reference Desk.
- A monographic CD-ROM for a reference department will have an “a” in the status field of the item record. This displays to the public as ASK REFERENCE.
3. CD-ROMs FOR THE GENERAL COLLECTIONS
Policy recommended by the Bibliographic Policy Committee: March 1999
- Call number fields will have CD-ROM and an accession number. Each location will have a separate accession number sequence (each location will begin with 1).
- Locations for the Main and branch libraries will be as follows:
Du Bois Library: Media.Biological Sciences: Permanent Reserve.
Music Library: Music.
Physical Sciences: Permanent Reserve.
