VOLUME DESIGNATIONS IN SERIES STATEMENTS

1. Use the designation in the 642 field of our series authority record.
If there is a conflict between LC copy and our series authority record, use the designation in our series authority record and notify the Series Authority Unit about the conflict.
2. If we have no series authority record, use the designation in the LC series authority record.   3. If there is no LC series authority record, use the designation on the item.
a. Use the abbreviations in the Standard Abbreviations List when the designation is not abbreviated on the item.   b. If the designation is abbreviated on the item, use that abbreviation, even if it does not conform to the Standard Abbreviations List.   c. If the designation is very long and there is no abbreviation for it, use the number without a designation.
When establishing volume designations in series statements, follow LC practice as described in the LCRI for AACR2 Rule 1.6G.
