The majority of United States maps in the Map Collection are recent and historic United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps dating from the beginning of the survey in the late 19th century, with varying scales from 1:12,000 to 1:250,000
Other United States maps include Bureau of Land Management maps depicting water and mineral rights, geologic atlases, national forest and park maps, aerial and satellite photos, and historic facsimiles. Thematic maps include environmental and geosciences, biogeography, human and cultural geography, political, economy, mines and mineral resources, agriculture, forests and vegetation, commerce, transportation, communication, manufacturing, public works and history.
The more recent USGS topographic quadrangles may be located by state in the Library's online catalog. Title search "topographic maps of (state)".
Most of the Collection's other United States maps are not entered in the Library's online catalog, but a limited number map may be found through a subject search for "United States maps".
