Exhibit: “The UMass Press: 45 Years of Publishing History”
Amherst, MA – “The UMass Press: 45 Years of Publishing History” is on display through August 31, 2008, in the Learning Commons on the Lower Level of the Du Bois Library at UMass Amherst. The exhibit showcases various aspects of the Press’s publishing program, including award-winning titles; culture, politics, & the cold war; Renaissance studies; environmental science; regional & local titles; creative writing; and faculty authors.
Founded in 1963, the University of Massachusetts Press is the book-publishing arm of the University of Massachusetts. Its mission is to publish first-rate books, edit them carefully, design them well, and market them vigorously. In so doing, it supports and enhances the university's role as a major research institution. Since its inception, the Press has sold more than 2 million volumes to customers worldwide. Today, it has over 900 titles in print. The Press offices are located in the historic East Experiment Station (1890). Seven employees, along with student assistants and outside sales representatives, produce and market approximately 35–40 new titles annually. The Press imprint is overseen by a faculty committee, whose members represent a broad spectrum of departments. New titles are approved after a rigorous process of peer review. In addition to publishing works of scholarship, the Press produces books of more general interest for a broader audience.
The Press is a proud member of the Association of American University Presses, which includes 126 scholarly presses in the United States and Canada. The books and catalogs in this exhibit represent a small sample of the Press output over the past 45 years. For further information, visit the Press website at www.umass.edu/umpress.
