DESCRIPTION OF CD-ROM

TIGER/Census Tract Street Index Version 3 is a set of 8 CDs that allow the user to determine geographic codes associated with a specific street name and address range. The CDs include information for streets contained within the Census TIGER database for all Counties or County equivalents in 50 States and the District of Columbia. The codes that this product identifies are: State (both current and 1990), 105th Congressional District, County (both current and 1990), ZIP Code (5-digit only), place, minor civil divisions (MCD) in 20 selected States, and Census tract or block numbering area codes.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Windows 95 or NT, 4 megabytes (MB) of free hard disk space; SVGA color display capable of displaying 1024 by 768 pixels. It is possible to use a lower screen resolution; see the readme file for details.

The Census Tract Street Locator allows users to look up streets in a state or county or look up streets or a specific address in a ZIP Code.

TO INSTALL

From the Start button (lower left corner of the screen), click Run.
In the Open box, type E:\TIGER_CTSI3\Setup.exe

SEARCHING

Insert the appropriate CD-ROM and double-click the TIGER_CTSI icon.
From the opening screen, select the desired state from the drop-down menu.

  1. Choose which geographic level to search. If you are searching for a common street name (Elm, Main, etc.), it is best to search at the smallest geographic level possible (such as ZIP code or Place). Click in the circle next to the desired geographic level.
  2. Choose the specific geographic level by selecting it from the menu that appears or typing its name in the box and then selecting it in the menu.
  3. Click the Select Street Name button.
  4. Enter street name.
  5. Click on the street name to view the street records at the botton of the screen.
  6. To switch to another state, go to the File Operations menu and choose Close.
    When you are finished using the CD-ROM, select the Exit menu.

    For more information, click on the Help menu, then on Help Topics.

TO UNINSTALL

From the Start button, choose Settings -- Control Panels.
Launch Add/Remove Programs.
Click on TIGER_CTSI and click the Add/Remove button.
You will be queried about removing files that are shared but not currently in use by any other program – it is OK to remove them.
