Heine settings performed in concerts
At the outset of this project, during my sabbatical in 1997-98, I presented a series of three concerts of music based on Heine's poetry, much of it found in the course of my research.
- "Happy Birthday, Heine!"
- on December 14, 1997 at the Unitarian Meetinghouse in Amherst, MA., celebrating Heine's 200th birthday with early, pre-1840 Heine settings by Mendelssohn, Hensel, Heller, Meyerbeer, Schubert, Lang and Curschmann.

- on January 15, 1998 at the Unitarian Meetinghouse in Northampton, MA, featuring Heine settings from Schumann's "song year" of 1840, including the cycles Liederkreis, op. 24, Dichterliebe, op. 48, and four dramatic ballads.

- “Lyrical Intermezzo I” begins a journey of musical exploration with Peter and friends through the first half of Heine’s most popular collection of poems. 33 songs in a multitude of languages and musical styles, including world and Valley premieres. In observance of the 150th anniversary of the poet's death in 1856.

- The Amherst College German Department and German Club present Peter W. Shea, tenor, and Gregory Hayes, piano, in an intimate house-concert performance of Robert Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe and other Heine settings, including highlights from the “Lyrisches Intermezzo I” concert. March 1, 2006, 4 pm. Porter House, 46 Boltwood Ave., Amherst MA (next to the Lord Jeffery Inn). Free and open to the public.
- “Lyrical Intermezzo II” continues and concludes a journey of musical exploration with Peter and friends through the second half of Heine’s most popular collection of poems. 33 more songs in a multitude of languages and musical styles, including world and Valley premieres. Saturday, April 15, 2006, 8 pm. Part of the National Yiddish Book Center’s celebration of National Poetry Month, at the Center, on the campus of Hampshire College, Rt. 116, Amherst. $6.
