Libraries Host 18th Annual Du Bois Lecture
The Libraries will host the 18th Annual Du Bois Lecture on February 23, 2012, at 4:30 p.m., in the Cape Cod Lounge, Student Union. Derrick P. Alridge will give a talk, “Ideas Have Consequences: The Radical Pedagogy of W.E.B. Du Bois.” He will explore Du Bois’s many meanings of pedagogy and offer a genealogy of Du Bois’s ideas about a variety of issues faced by black Americans during the 20th century. Refreshments will be served. The event is open to the public.

Exhibit: The Gesture in Light: Illuminated
The Libraries host an exhibit, “The Gesture in Light: Illuminated,” by Theresa Antonellis from Monday, January 9, through Sunday, May 11, in the Science and Engineering Library, Lederle Lowrise. The exhibit consists of a related series of framed prints featuring photo-enhanced light photography. A reception will be held Thursday, February 2, from 4-6 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Taking a Bite Out of Textbook Costs: Open Education Initiative grants save students more than $70,000
The high cost of commercial textbooks, both print and electronic, is a major concern for today’s students and their parents. In an effort to reduce these costs, the UMass Amherst Provost’s Office and the University Libraries launched a program in the spring of 2011—the Open Education Initiative—that supports faculty interested in pursuing non-traditional educational resources as an alternative to the traditional commercial textbook.

Libraries Call for Submissions for Undergraduate and Graduate Student Awards
The Libraries invite submissions for two student awards: the Emily Silverman Book Collecting Contest for undergraduates and graduate students, and the Friends of the Library Undergraduate Research Award. The deadline for both contests is February 24, 2012. Submission guidelines and evaluation criteria for both awards.

Kenneth Feinberg, an esteemed attorney known for achieving comprehensive settlements in high-profile liability cases and for victims of large-scale human and natural disasters, today announced the donation of his papers and related materials to the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries.

The Learning Commons has 26 glass rooms specifically for group study. Groups of 3 or more take precedence over singletons.
We provide access to fourteen streaming audio and video databases
that contain thousands of documentaries, staged productions, film and video
segments, classical music, jazz, blues, and much more.
The Libraries have initiated a project to replace the elevators in the Du Bois Library. One elevator at a time will be taken out of service. The project is expected to be complete by 2013.

The Learning Commons has a Poster Printing service. You can make an appointment to print posters up to 42” wide.
There are 8 high end Macs specifically designated for use by students working on video production projects. Ask about the multimedia pod at the LC tech desk.
The Library is always seeking local artists to exhibit their work in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library and the Science and Engineering Library. Contact the Arts, Exhibits and Events Committee for more information.
The Library provides free access to
Atomic Learning, a service that supplies online instructional videos on a large variety of popular software programs. This service is available to the campus community and anyone using the Library.
Students can check out Tablet/Laptop PCs and Projectors from the Reserves Department on the Main Floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library for use in the building.

The Image Collection Library (ICL) provides access and support for digital image resources for the UMass Amherst campus community.
There is a designated library liaison for every department and program on campus. Liaisons provide specialized research assistance for faculty and students via phone, e-mail or individual consultation. They also offer instruction on library resources and research methods and select library materials for purchase.
