Evaluating Information

Information experts - librarians, teachers, researchers, and "knowledge workers" - know that the ability to critically evaluate information is necessary for full participation in our increasingly information-driven, data-ridden society. From buying a car to electing a politician to choosing medical treatment, daily life requires decision-making. Effective decision-making depends on the ability to access meaningful information and weigh its merit, to sort the wheat from the chaff. With the explosion of materials available on the Web, an information landscape as rich in misinformation as in fact, evaluation skills are more important than ever.

In this section, you will learn four essential criteria to use in evaluating information:

• Credibility
• Accuracy + Appropriateness
• Reasonableness
• Support
