“ Boston : Through Time and Space”

An Exhibit from the Du Bois Library Map Collection at UMass Amherst

Amherst , MA - An exhibition of maps featuring the city of Boston will be on display from May 27 – July 5, 2005, on the Main Floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library at UMass Amherst. The exhibit is a sampling from the Map Collection, which is located on the 2 nd floor and is open to the public weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the summer. “ Boston : Through Time and Space” features aerial, satellite, and historic maps dating back to the 17 th century.

According to Sandy Lillydahl, Senior Maps Assistant, one of the reasons that Boston makes such an interesting map exhibit is that it's one of the oldest European colonial settlements in the U.S. “We have a pictorial map from the Revolutionary War showing little Redcoats marching around,” she says, “Then there are the interesting land changes created by the leveling of hills and filling in of bay areas, which are documented over time in Boston maps.” The display also consists of satellite photos of the U.S. , Earth, and the Milky Way Galaxy with arrows indicating the location of Boston on each.

For more information, contact Sandy Lillydahl, Map Collection, at 545-2397.
