"DU BOIS AND BOND:
BLACK EDUCATION IN THE AGE OF JIM CROW"A Talk by John H. Bracey, Jr.
Amherst, Mass. - John H. Bracey Jr., professor of Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst, will give a talk on "W.E.B. Du Bois and Horace Mann Bond: Black Education in the Age of Jim Crow" on Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at 4:00 p.m. in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library at UMass. The talk will take place on the Garden Level (Main Floor) of the Library. The papers of both civil rights leaders, Du Bois and Bond, are held in the Du Bois Library's Special Collections and Archives on Floor 25.The event celebrates Du Bois's birthday and the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the U.S. Supreme Court decision to end racial segregation in public schools.
Prof. John Bracey has been a member of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies since 1972. He is the author of numerous books on the African American experience, particularly focusing on African American social history. He served as editor of the microfilm version of the Horace Mann Bond Papers.
Sponsors of the event are the UMass Amherst Libraries and the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies. Introductory remarks by Chancellor John V. Lombardi, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Charlena Seymour, Head of Special Collections and Archives William Thompson, and Director of Libraries Jay Schafer are expected.
