Peregrine Falcons Nest Successfully for Fourth Year
on Roof of UMass Amherst Library
Amherst, MA - On June 5, 2006, personnel from Mass. Wildlife banded two Peregrine falcon chicks on the roof of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, one female and one male. The larger female chick showed some developing flight and tail feathers. The smaller male was still nearly completely downy white. This is the fourth successful nesting season at this location. In 2005 three chicks were hatched. To see images: http://people.umass.edu/jvanheer/perbanding06
On June 20, 2006, a Peregrine fledgling was found on a Library courtyard railing, a very public area, and had to be returned to the nest box on top of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library. For more images: http://people.umass.edu/jvanheer/perfledge06/
There are only 12 nesting pairs of Peregrine falcons in the state.
