Learning Commons in W.E.B. Du Bois Library Adds New Services
Amherst, MA – The Du Bois Library has seen a huge increase in visitors since the Learning Commons opened last fall. In September 2005, the number of visitors increased by 20% over the previous September, and has increased steadily since then. The February 2006 numbers are up 70% over February 2005. To continue meeting the needs of students the following new services are now available:
- Several flatbed scanners
- A vending machine with supplies including everything from caffeine gum to Ethernet cables.
- A collection of writing resource books available near the Writing Center.
- The Calipari Instruction Room is now open after 11 a.m. for computer use (if not being used for a previously scheduled class).
- Students can now look online for an available computer in the Learning Commons, OIT labs on the 7th and 16th floors, and other locations on campus at http://www-pcco.oit.umass.edu/areas/avail.asp.
- Procrastination Station café has expanded its hours until 1:00 a.m., Sunday to Thursday. For complete hours go to http://www.umass.edu/learningcommons/servicedesksreg.html.
- Covered beverages are permitted in the Library. Food is permitted except in the Calipari Room and the OIT labs. Users are encouraged to clean up after themselves.
- For commuters, the Parking Garage fee is now only $3.00 from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Daytime users can receive the first hour free ($1.50 value) when they get their ticket validated at the Learning Commons and Technology Support Desk.
