Umass amherst library Celebrates 20 Years as Patent and Trademark Depository

On November 14, 2004 , the UMass Amherst Library will celebrate its 20 th anniversary as a Patent and Trademark Depository library.

The responsibilities of a patent and trademark depository library include receiving and housing copies of U.S. patents and patent and trademark research materials, making patents and trademarks accessible to the public, and educating users in searching patents and trademarks.

The UMass Amherst depository is one of 86 patent depository libraries in the U.S. Boston Public Library is the only other patent depository in Massachusetts .

Since becoming a depository, there have been four patent depository librarians: Eric Esau, Selma Etter, Cindy Spell, and the current patent librarian, Leonard Adams.

From 1984-2003, the Patent and Trademark collection was located in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library (now known as the Integrated Sciences and Engineering Library). In 2004, it was moved to Government Documents, Floor 6, of the Du Bois Library.

An exhibit honoring the Library's years as a Patent and Trademark Depository library will be on display on the Main Floor of the Du Bois Library from Friday, November 12, through Monday, November 29.

Leonard Adams will give a presentation on the history and types of patents, and the Patent and Trademark Office, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 12, in the Calipari Room (Main Floor, Du Bois Library).
