LIBRARY ANNOUNCES SUMMER IMPROVEMENTS

Amherst, MA – The W.E.B. Du Bois Library will implement several changes this summer to improve service to users and optimize space.

Microforms can be requested, viewed, and printed in its current location on the Lower Level. This summer, microforms will move to the new Reserve, Media & Microforms Department on Floor 3. Items located in this department are identified in the Five College and UMass online catalogs with the location "UM Reserves Media Microforms." New multifunctional scanning, saving, and printing equipment for microforms will be available on Floor 3. These four machines allow users to save microformat materials to a flash drive or CDs, send as an email attachment, or send to a printer. Microforms may be requested in advance online [http://www.library.umass.edu/caad/borf.html].

LPs and audiocassettes may also be requested on the 3rd floor.  In the online catalog, their locations are "UM LP Storage" and "UM Audiocassette Storage."  Beginning June 15, LPs and audiocassettes may be requested directly from the catalog record for the item by selecting the "Request Item" button. Requestors will be informed by email when the item is available for pick-up on the 3rd Floor - within approximately two hours of the request.

The videotape collection will be temporarily unavailable through June 15, 2007.  Faculty may reserve videos for classroom use (if they are available at one of the Four Colleges) by sending an email request to avreserves@library.umass.edu.  And, as always, members of the UMass Amherst community may visit any of the Four College Libraries to view videos.  The DVD and Music CD collections remain available.

Magazines and journals in the Current Periodical Room will move to the book stacks to sit alongside the bound volumes of the same journals beginning June 18, 2007.  A new reading room with current issues of 80 popular magazines and newspapers is expected to open on Floor 5 on by June 30, 2007.

For more information about Current Periodicals, call Reference Services at 413-545-0150.  For questions regarding Reserves, Media & Microforms call (413) 545-2358 or email mreserve@library.umass.edu.
