PAIS INTERNATIONAL
Database Guide

PAIS International covers the literature of public and social policy, and the social sciences in general. It includes citations to and abstracts of journal articles, books, government documents, internet sites, statistical com- pilations, directories, and reports of public, private and intergovernmental and organizations, 1972 to present.

Getting Started
From the UMass Amherst Digital Library, www.library.umass.edu, click Database Locator, then Display all titles, and select PAIS International from the list. If prompted, enter your OIT username and password.

Searching
Basic Searching
Type a word or phrase in the Search box to find citations with those words in them. Use and between words to find citations with both words; use or for citations with either word; use not to exclude terms. Examples:
labor and france
refugee or homeless
euro not dollar

Truncation
To find words with the same root, use the asterisk (*). Example: for theory, theoretical, etc., type:
theor*

Limiting the Search
On the right side of the screen in the blue area, click Change to limit your search by language, type of publication, dates, and more.

Advanced Searching
Click the Advanced tab, above, to get a larger search form for a more specific search.

Verifying Authors, Subject Headings, Journals, Document Types
Click the Index tab to search and select terms used in the records. Use General Index for authors, subject headings, and journals; use the pull-down menu for other indexes like document type and language. Find your term by typing it in the box, or scroll through the list using red arrows. Click to select terms for your search, then click the green Search Checked Terms button.

Combining or Narrowing Existing Searches: Click the Search History tab. Existing searches are listed on the bottom half of the search screen. Combine them, or add additional terms to narrow. Examples:
#2 and #1
#2 and gender

Viewing Search Results
Citation information, abstracts and subject headings of search results are displayed in a window beneath a set of navigational buttons. Browse with the scroll bar on the right. If you wish to display more or fewer fields (sections of the records), click the Change Display button.

Finding Cited References in the Library
Click on the Check UMass Library Holdings link at the end of the record for an automatic search of the Library Catalog for the cited publication. If the catalog search is successful, be sure to note the publication's location and call number. Consult the Library Directory ("Pink Sheet") for information about locations. Help is available from Reference Librarians, or, for journals not held at UMass, from Interlibrary Loan (current UMass affiliates only.)

Marking Records to Print, Download, or Email
As you browse, mark each citation you wish to keep by clicking in the box at the top of each citation record..

To Print
Click the printer icon on the right. When the print dialog box opens, specify which fields of which records to print. Then, click the Print button in the upper right hand corner of the window. Click OK. Note: Printing from library PCs requires a UCard and costs 5¢ per page. Follow the instructions at the printing stations.

To Save to Floppy Disk
Click the disk icon on the right. When the print dialog box opens, specify which fields of which records to print. Then, click the Save button in the upper right hand corner of the window. At the Save As window, select the a:/ drive from the Save In pull down menu and type in File Name. Click Save and file is saved as a text document.

To Save to OIT U Drive on Library PCs (OIT account holders only)
Leave PAIS International open while you click the OIT U Drive shortcut on the library PC desktop and enter your OIT username and password. Back in PAIS International, click the disk icon on the right. When the print dialog box opens, specify which fields of which records to print. Then, click the Save button in the upper right hand corner of the window. At the Save As window, select Udrive.oit.umass.edu from the Save In pull down menu and type in File Name. Click Save and file is saved as a text document. Note: After logging out of PAIS International, be sure to disconnect from your Udrive account for security.

To Email
Click the letter icon to the right. The email dialog box opens and allows you to specify which fields of which records to print. Then, fill in the email address and subject line, and click the Send EMail button to the right.
