The Research Library Residency Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Library is designed to advance new professionals into research library careers through a unique combination of experience, education, and mentoring. Residents will have the opportunity to shape and develop digital library projects and serve users in increasingly integrated multimedia environments. Residents will also have an opportunity to develop a specialization within a library department while broadly participating in library-wide initiatives.
Residents are jointly appointed to a Library unit and to the Digital Initiatives Team. Examples of digital library projects might include: integrating distance learning technologies into library instruction, developing multimedia services, prototyping electronic publishing, or creating web based information literacy curriculum.
Educational and mentoring aspects of the program enrich the resident experience. Seminars and workshops will be offered to explore current issues and topics in librarianship, information management and higher education. Residents will have both formal and informal opportunities to learn from colleagues and other information professionals. Residents will draw on the experience and guidance of colleagues on issues ranging from publishing advice to future career decisions.
The talents and enthusiasm of Residents enrich the Library and the University, as they bring diverse backgrounds, innovative ideas and the latest in Information and Library degree training. As part of their charge, Residents will share their information technology skills with Library staff and users. Residents will also contribute to the library as their experiences and service help to define and shape the Residency Program. In addition, with the focus on technology and combined departmental and library-wide responsibilities, Residents will model new roles for librarians in the changing setting of the research library.
Residents are appointed for 2 year terms. Currently, application are not being accepted. Should a search be opened for new residents information will be available at http://www.library.umass.edu/jobs
More information on the residents, their projects and activities, and useful links is available at http://www.library.umass.edu/residency/residents.html.
