What do I need to search the library databases and electronic journals from a computer outside the library?

You need an OIT computer account (sometimes referred to as an UMAccess Remote PPP account.) Your library barcode on your student ID will not work. For more information about getting or using an OIT account see: http://www.oit.umass.edu/accounts/new.html, call (413) 545-9400 or complete an OIT Help Desk Form.

If you are connecting to online library resources via your UMass dialup/PPP account (http://www.oit.umass.edu/accounts/), you will not be prompted for your account username and password.

Please Note: Until the Spring 2004 semester, students registered in an UMassAmherstOnline or UMass Amherst Continuing Education Online course will receive an OIT account only if arrangements have been made by the course's faculty. If you are taking an online course which requires an account, contact your faculty.

How do I access the databases with an UMAccess Account?

Any member of the UMass Amherst community with a valid OIT UMAccess account can access research databases through any Internet Service Provider (such as AOL or EarthLink) using a recent version of Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. The browser must allow cookies so that the login can be remembered during the session.

To access our databases from off-campus:

  • Go to the Database Locator
  • Identify the database of choice (e.g., Expanded Academic ASAP)
  • A window should pop up asking for a username and password
  • Type in a valid UMAccess username and password
  • Click Login

You should then be allowed to access your chosen database. The login will be remembered for the session, but will time out if there are 30 minutes of inactivity. If the computer is vacated, please close the browser window to terminate the session and to make the session cookie carrying the login information go away. Other restricted e-resources may be found in the Library Catalog or in other locations on the Library's web pages. Clicking on those links will also bring up a login for off-campus users.

I am using my OIT account and I'm still blocked from searching the database I want. What should I do?

You may be blocked for several reasons:

— Many databases require that your browser is cookie-enabled (see below for instructions.)

— Some databases use JavaScript or JavaTM, and these must be enabled on your browser (see below for instructions.)

— If you are using Internet Explorer, your browser security must be set to medium-low or lower. PLEASE NOTE: When you have finished searching the databases, you should return your browser security settings to their previous levels (we recommend medium or high,) close your browser, and restart it before you continue visiting web sites or reading your e-mail.

— If you are using AOL as your Internet Service Provider, you may be more successful if you launch a new Internet Explorer or Netscape browser window.

— A few databases require additional passwords. Contact the W.E.B. Du Bois Library Reference Desk for further assistance: 413-545-0150 or http://www.library.umass.edu/ask/

— If you have changed your OIT account password, make sure you enter your UMAccess password. This may be your original password.

If you have made the previously mentioned adjustments and you are still having difficulty, send an e-mail to database help. To help us help you more quickly, PLEASE include the following:

  • database or online journal you are trying to search,
  • what browser you are using, and
  • the error message you see, if any.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a text message conveyed from a Web server to a Web browser. The message is stored on your hard drive, and it sends information to the Web server about what you are doing while you are at that site.

The Library databases employ session cookies which function only for the duration of your current connection to the database. The cookie transmits transaction history and authentication data from your browser to the database server.
