Building upon the activist legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois, the Department of Special Collections and University Archives collects primary materials relating to individuals and groups devoted to advancing social causes and creating positive change politically, economically, spiritually, and socially. By preserving the records of these activities, SCUA makes it possible for future scholars, activists, and members of the community to continue to engage with the ideas that have motivated so many.

The manuscript collections reflect our ongoing commitments and the rich heritage of social activism in our region. Although our interests extend to any endeavors that reflect efforts of individuals and groups promoting or experiencing social change, we have focused particularly upon the movements for peace, social justice, and racial equality, environmentalism, labor activism, intentional communities, and gay rights. In part, our interests lie in the intersections between these various facets, the ways in which peace activists, for example, take up the cause for social justice, or in which spiritual concerns inform social action.
