Ezra S. Gannett, Relation of the North to Slavery
Although New England had a proud and vocal abolitionist heritage, New Englanders were as divided on the issue of slavery as any Americans. Between the time of the Revolution and the American Civil War, New Englanders argued from theology, morals, and politics on both (or all) sides of the question.
Drawn from SCUA's collections, the following 100 pamphlets were selected for digitization to reflect the shifting tides of immediatist and gradualist thought in the region, pro-slavery apologetics, the impact of the evolving legal environment, colonization and integration, race relations, labor theory, and the political, economic, moral, and religious dimensions of antislavery agitation.
With a few exceptions, we have not duplicated works available through Cornell's excellent digital archive of the Samuel J. May Anti-Slavery Collection , but we have included a few non-New England publications due to their influence within the region or for their unique interest.
