    I was a colleague of Dr. Watkins at Howard University in 1973 and wrote his obituary for the American Anthropologist. I am presently writing an article on Dr. Watkins and his contributions to the field of anthropological linguistics. He was the first African American Ph.D. in anthropology when he received the degree in 1933 from the University of Chicago.
