History of homesite

[Shirley Graham and W.E.B. Du Bois at the homesite, ca. 1950]Born “by a golden river and in the shadow of two great hills” in 1868, W.E.B. Du Bois had a lifelong attachment to his ancestral home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The Black Burghardts of western Massachusetts were one of the oldest families in the region, with family members serving in the American Revolution, Shays’ Rebellion, and the Civil War. Du Bois’s fond memories of Great Barrington stayed with him a…

W.E.B. Du Bois wrote his Credo at Atlanta University as a rejection of the politics of Booker T. Washington, whose work toward racial equality demanded a slow, steady approach that was viewed by some, Du Bois included, as too accomodating of the status quo. Defining himself in contrast to Washington, who was already established as the leading figure in the civil rights movement at the time, Du Bois composed his Credo to publicize his own philosophy both to blacks, who he hoped to inspire, and to…

Du Bois had long worried that African American children had no place to turn in the mainstream media for stories about members of their race. With most of the children’s literature of the day produced by white authors for white children, Du Bois wanted to offer an alternative: a magazine written by black authors for black children.

After completing work on the The Philadelphia Negro, a work that was beginning of his reputation as a sociologist, Du Bois accepted an offer from Atlanta University in 1897 to teach History and Economics. There, Du Bois planned a long-range series of studies dealing with the issues and problems that faced black Americans. The result was the Atlanta University Studies, which was one of the first continuous sociological surveys in the United States. Du Bois hoped that through scientific inquiry, t…

First published in February 1920 by Harcourt, Brace & Howe, Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil was Du Bois’s sixth book. The book consisted of essays and short fiction about race, class, and gender issues. Throughout the essays Du Bois set forth and defended themes challenging, for example, a dominant (less inclusive, less egalitarian) definition of democracy, the subordination of African American women, and the European exploitation of Africa.
