<bioghist id="bioghist">

Born in Pelham, New Hampshire, in 1882, Frederick A. Cutter attended Lowell High School before enrolling into the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1902. One of the first students on a five year plan, Cutter graduated as a member of the class of 1907. During his time at the college, he became known for his jovial nature, earning the nickname "Joke," and for his involvement in athletics. The center on the varsity football team, he was also a forward on the basketball team, manager of the baseball team, and a member of the Undergraduate Athletic Board. In his equally active social life, he served as head of the Komical Klub, a Vaudeville cast member, and he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

After graduating, Cutter established a successful tree care business in Orange, New Jersey.

A quirky reflection of an undergraduate's life at Massachusetts Agricultural College at the turn of the twentieth century, the Frederick A. Cutter collection includes photographs of the 1907 football team and the 1906 and 1907 members of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, a uniform for the 1907 M.A.C. basketball team, large MAC pennants and banners, and a Lowell High School sweater from 1902. There is also a collection of 1907 M.A.C. football gear, including cleats and a nose guard.

Worthy of note is a photograph of the graduating class of 1907, which includes one of the university's first female graduates, Susie D. Livers, as well as one of its first African American graduates, John T. Caruthers. Cutter's collection also contains the earliest extant M.A.C. basketball uniform. Among the remainder of the collection are some reunion paraphernalia from the class of 1907, Columbia University Calendars for 1909 and 1910, the 1914 M.A.C. bulletin, a 1907 commencement program from Mount Holyoke College, and Cutter's own Zoology notebook. The collection is organized chronologically, with textiles housed in separate boxes.

Harriet McLane, daughter of Frederick A. Cutter, graciously donated this collection to University Archives on November 14, 2000. After her father's passing, McLane and her sister inherited his house, located in New Jersey, and all his belongings. McLane moved to Palm Springs California, while her sister moved into their childhood home. McLane discovered the collection in a box in the attic of her sister's house while cleaning it out after her unfortunate passing. After she discovered the significance of the contents of the box she contacted Michael Milewski of the University Archives and chose to donate the collection to the University her father loved so much.
