Crockett, James Underwood

The horticulturist, Jim Crockett (1915-1979) earned wide acclaim as host of the popular television show, Crockett’s Victory Garden. A 1935 graduate of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst, Crockett returned home to Massachusetts after a stint in the Navy during the Second World War and began work as a florist. A small publication begun for his customers, Flowery Talks, grew so quickly in popularity that Crockett sold his flower shop in 1950 to write full time. His first book, Window Sill Gardening (N.Y., 1958), was followed by seventeen more on gardening, ornamental plants, and horticulture, culminating with twelve volumes in the Time-Life Encyclopedia of Gardening. He was the recipient of numerous awards for garden writing and was director of the American Horticultural Society. In 1975, he was contacted about a new gardening show on PBS, Victory Garden, which he hosted until his death by cancer in 1979.

Documenting an important career in bringing horticulture to the general public, the Crockett Papers contain a mix of professional and personal correspondence and writing by Jim Crockett from throughout his career. The collection includes a particularly extensive set of letters from George B. Williams, Crockett’s father in law, and copies most of his publications.

Hamilton, Tom Sherman, 1924-

The horticulturist Tom S. Hamilton was a member of the faculty at UMass Amherst in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. A specialist in ornamental plants, Hamilton worked at UMass from prior to 1950 until his retirement in 1986.

The Hamilton Papers contain three works on ornamental plants published by the Dept. of Landscape Architecture, along with a mimeographed laboratory manual that Hamilton used in his courses on landscape operations in 1979.

Boardman, Charles M.

A member of of QTV fraternity, Charles Meade Boardman graduated from the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1920 with a degree in landscape gardening.

Boardman’s Papers include two of his college yearbooks, a smattering of correspondence from the 1920s relating to landscape gardening, and approximately 30 photographs, apparently taken during or shortly after his time at MAC.

Zube, Ervin H.

Ervin H. Zube was the head of the University’s Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning department (LARP) from 1965-1977. His groundbreaking research on landscape architecture and assessment helped define the international importance and influence of the field and his consultancy work, most notably with the National Park Service, brought his intellectual achievements into practical application. Born on April 24, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Zube earned his B.S. at the University of Wisconsin in 1954. After a two year service in the United States Air Force, Zube enrolled in Harvard’s Graduate School of Design where he received his M.L.A in 1959. Zube held teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California, Berkeley before beginning his ten year professorship at the University of Massachusetts in 1965. As the head of LARP, Zube established the Environmental Design program, which introduced a revolutionary cross-discipline approach to the study of landscape architecture. Zube became the director of the Institute for Man and the Environment in 1972 and restructured the institute to support academic research in new, important topics including community development and cooperation with the National Park Service, seeding important national and international institutions with progressively educated researchers. As a consultant, Zube helped the National Park Service develop their “master plan” for Yosemite and worked with numerous national and international institutions to manage and assess their environmental resources. Zube ended his career as a professor at the University of Arizona where he retired in 1983. He remained active in the field until his death in 2001.

The Ervin H. Zube papers include Zube’s lecture notes and academic correspondence, research materials and publications representing his work in landscape assessment and architecture, notes and reports from his consultancy work with many institutions and committees, correspondence from his role as a conference planner, as well as correspondence relating to his many book reviews. Zube’s papers also cover his research and teaching while at the University of Arizona and contain photographs from his research on the Connecticut River Valley.

French, Henry F. (Henry Flagg), 1813-1885

Although Henry Flagg French was selected as the first president of the new Massachusetts Agricultural College, he served in that office for barely two years. A graduate of Dartmouth and Harvard Law School, French was a strong proponent of scientific agriculture, but in 1866, after falling out with the college administration over campus design, he resigned his office, leaving before the first students were actually admitted.

The French collection includes a suitably small body of correspondence, including 16 letters (1864-1866) from French to the original campus landscape designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, and letters and reports from French to college officials, together with published writings, biographical material about French and his son, sculptor Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), and photographs. In part, these are copies of originals in the Frederick Law Olmsted Papers at American University, Washington, DC.

Greenbie, Barrie B.

Barrie Barstow Greenbie was a key member of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at UMass Amherst from 1970-1989. In a long and remarkably diverse career, Greenbie worked as an artist with the Works Progress Administration, as a soldier and journalist, as a professor of theater, an architect, inventor, author, and landscape planner. After earning a BA in drama from the University of Miami (1953),he worked for several years in the theatre program at Skidmore College. While there, he added architecture to his array of talents, designing the East 74th Street Theater in New York in 1959, and founded a company to produce a “self-erecting” building designed to substitute for summer tent theaters. Two years after joining the faculty at UMass in 1970, he completed a doctorate in urban affairs and regional planning at the University of Wisconsin and continued with a characteristically broad array of creative pursuits, designing the William Smith Clark Memorial, among other things, and conducting an extensive aerial survey of the landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. In monographs such as Design for Diversity and Spaces: Dimensions of the Human Landscape, Greenbie examined the interactions between humans and nature. He died at his home on South Amherst in 1998.

The Greenbie Papers document a long career as academic, writer, artist, architect, and theatrical designer. Of particular note is the extensive and engrossing correspondence, which extends from Greenbie’s years as a student at the Taft School in the late 1930s through his World War II service with the Sixth Army in the South Pacific and Japan, to his tenure at UMass Amherst (1970-1989). The collection also includes a small, but interesting correspondence between Greenbie’s parents (1918-1919).

Background on Barrie B. Greenbie

A member of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1970 to 1989, Barrie Barstow Greenbie (1920-1998) enjoyed a remarkably diverse career, contributing to fields ranging from art to theatre, architecture to landscape planning. Born in New York on March 29, 1920, Greenbie’s early life was in many ways as diverse as his adulthood. Raised to believe that his father, Sydney, was of Swedish descent, he discovered in his forties that he actually descended from a Jewish family who had fled Russia during the pogroms of Alexander II. His mother Marjorie, scion of an old New England family, was among the first women granted a PhD from Yale and taught English at Mount Holyoke College.

Prepped at the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, during the height of the Great Depression, Greenbie faced a still-sluggish economy upon graduation. After studying at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art Students League, both in New York City, he earned his first job in 1940, when he earned the distinction of becoming the youngest artist ever commissioned by the Works Progress Administration, painting a mural for the post office in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

After service with the Field Artillery in the Pacific during the Second World War and as a correspondent with the 6th Army in occupied Japan, Greenbie returned home to continue his education at the University of Miami, studying drama with a concentration in playwriting and stage design. Following receipt of his BA in 1953, he joined the Theatre Department at Skidmore College in Saratoga, N.Y., all the while maintaining an active creative life. It was there that he first branched out into architecture, designing buildings for the college and in 1959, the widely acclaimed East 74th Street Theater in New York (later renamed the Phoenix). He later returned to school, earning a doctorate in urban affairs and regional planning from the University of Wisconsin (1972) two years after accepting a position at UMass Amherst.

The wide-ranging intellect and keen artistic talent displayed at Skidmore characterized Greenbie’s professional life at every stage. Author of a raft of essays, plays, and poetry, he designed theatres for dance for the Ford Foundation, invented a new conveyor belt system, and acquired five patents for inventions such as the Portapavillion, a portable open-framed tent, and the G-Frame house, a prefabricated house design that is easy and fast to build. Among his scholarly contributions were three monographs Design for Diversity: Planning for Natural Man in the Neo-Technic Environment (1976), focused particularly on the interactions between humans and nature, Spaces: Dimensions of the Human Landscape (1981), and Space and Spirit in Modern Japan (1988). His autobiography, A Hole in the Heartland appeared in 1996. At UMass, Greenbie pursued campus projects as diverse as designing the William Smith Clark Memorial (a joint effort between UMass and Hokkaido University to honor the third President of Massachusetts Agricultural College) and conducting an extensive aerial survey of the landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley.

Greenbie died at his home in South Amherst in 1998. He was survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Vlasta J. (Koran) Greenbie, three daughters, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Contents of Collection

Documenting the creative and professional life of Barrie Greenbie, this collection offers a rich resource for study of Greenbie’s education, overseas service during World War II, his professional lives in the theatre and landscape architecture, and his relationships with family members, including his first wife Meg and his parents Marjorie and Sydney. The collection is organized into four series: Personal and Biographical, Professional, the Theatre, and the Connecticut River.

An engaging writer from early in life, Greenbie maintained a robust correspondence with his parents and wife from his time at the Taft School through the end of the Second World War, with slightly sparser correspondence for later years. Also included is a fascinating volume of typed copies of letters exchanged between Marjorie and Sydney Greenbie during their courtship in 1918-1919.

Among the great constants of Greenbie’s varied life was a passion for the theatre, which emerges throughout the collection. In addition to some architectural designs for theatres and a model of the East 74th Street Theatre, the collection includes correspondence, an array of playbills and photographs of plays directed by Greenbie (primarily during the early 1950s), and several scripts, ending with The Apple Orchard, which was performed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the early 1990s. Also worthy of note are materials relating to Greenbie’s patents on the Portapavilion, a collapsible outdoor pavilion, and on the G-Frame, a frame used in prefabricated houses.

Finally, the collection brings together material that highlights Greenbie’s interest in the Connecticut River Valley. The collection includes research, analysis, and correspondence relating to his study of the Valley and a compact disk containing numerous aerial images of the riverscape.

Series Descriptions

Series 1. Personal and Biographical	1895-1997	3 linear ft.
Consists chiefly of correspondence, with a significant portion of the letters exchanged between Greenbie and his wife, Meg, during his service in World War II. Documents Greenbie’s childhood, early education, and his parents’ lives and work. The history of his father’s origin is captured in Greenbie’s book, The Hole in the Heartland; copies of documents collected during his research are included in this series. The published book and correspondence relating to the writing and production of the book can be found in the professional series.
Series 2. Professional	1951-1996	4.5 linear ft.
Contains a variety of professional papers documenting Greenbie’s long and distinguished career, in particular his design of the G-Frame prefabricated house and the Portapavilion as well as his work in Japan. Also includes correspondence and research notes relating to his book, The Hole in the Heartland, which tells the story of Greenbie’s search for the truth about his father’s origin. The book documents the mystery of his father’s family history, as well as the discovery that his father, Sidney Greenbie, was not the son of Swedish immigrants, but of Russian Jews who were refugees from the porgroms of Czar Alexander II.
Series 3. Theater	1950-1996	1.5 linear ft.
Ranges from Greenbie’s early theater work at the University of Miami to his later work at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on The Apple Orchard, a play written and produced by Greenbie.
Series 4. Connecticut River	1961-2002	1.5 linear ft.
Highlights Greenbie’s interest in the Connecticut River and includes a CD of aerial images he took. Public response to these aerial images of the river prompted Greenbie to begin writing a book about the Connecticut River titled The Connecticut Riverscape: The View from Above. Greenbie was working on the manuscript at the time of his death.

Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) Connecticut

A product of the back-to-the-land movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Northeast Organic Farming Association began as the vision of a New York City plumbing supplies salesman. Now an increasingly influential non-profit organization with chapters in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont, NOFA has “nearly 4,000 farmers, gardeners and consumers working to promote healthy food, organic farming practices and a cleaner environment.”

The CT NOFA collection documents the evolution of NOFA from its founding in 1971 to the present, with a notable concentration on the Connecticut branch beginning with correspondence and publications dating from the late 1980s.

Background Note

The Connecticut branch of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) was founded in 1982 by Bill Duesing, the third state-level chapter to organize formally. Today, CT NOFA sponsors twice-yearly conferences and issues a quarterly newsletter, Gleanings. It stands out among NOFA chapters for its emphasis on organic lawn and land care, working cooperatively with the Massachusetts chapter to conduct a formal organic land care program. The goal of this program, according to CT NOFA, is to “extend the vision and principles of organic agriculture to the care of the landscapes where most people live, work, play, and otherwise spend their daily lives,” a particularly important goal in a state as densely settled as Connecticut. Chaired by a scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and with ties to several colleges and universities, the Organic Land Care Program makes CT NOFA the most academic branch of NOFA.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Samuel Kaymen — the “NOFA prophet” — was privy to all the movements and motivations of the 1960s. Like many others in his time, Kaymen felt that his life was spiritually undernourished, and in 1969, he moved from the city to rural Unity, New Hampshire, to start a self-sufficient garden with his wife, Louise.

With no previous experience in agriculture, Kaymen learned all he could from outdated library books, eventually stumbling across Edward Hyams’ Soil and Civilization. Hyams argued that “the first thing a civilization loses is its topsoil,” and that the fall of all the great civilizations of the past could be linked to agricultural collapse. Kaymen was shocked. “I didn’t know that agriculture was important,” he wrote, “I thought that food was assembled in the backs of grocery stores!” But with his surprise came inspiration. Kaymen would start an organization of like-minded growers who would farm in an organic, natural, and sustainable way. In 1971, now living in Westminster, New Hampshire, Kaymen founded the Natural Organic Farming Association.

The first meeting of NOFA (which would change the first part of its name to “Northeast” in 1993) took place on June 7, 1971. Kaymen had posted fliers and sent out mailers announcing that NOFA would teach and promote nine principles, including proper composting, seeding, weeding, and other skills necessary for farm production. Conspicuously missing from the list was marketing. “This shows how naive I really was,” Kaymen said in 1998. Starting with a budget of $35, Kaymen and the farmers, gardeners, and hippies who attended that first meeting decided that NOFA would sponsor seminars, seed-exchanges, bulk shopping, and apprenticeships. They would also publish a quarterly newsletter named after what Kaymen hoped to be, The Natural Farmer.

Eventually, Kaymen “hooked up with people in New York City who were running daycare centers” and at least once a week, NOFA farmers would load up an old truck in the middle of the night and drive six hours to Manhattan and Harlem to deliver fresh produce to daycare centers and to people on street corners who “hadn’t seen fresh collards since they were in the South.”

In 1973, Kaymen was given a farm in Cornish, New Hampshire, by a group of people who thought he “was a good organizer… a good speaker and [who] wanted [him] to be a New Hampshire person.” Robert Houriet, a farmer and writer living in Hardwick, Vermont, offered to take over The Natural Farmer, and according to Kaymen, “it immediately became a thousand percent better.” With Kaymen in New Hampshire and The Natural Farmer reaching more people than it ever had before, NOFA became truly a multi-state organization.

The first NOFA conference, cosponsored by the Biodynamic Farming Association, was held in Wilton, New Hampshire, in 1975. Wendell Berry was the keynote speaker and around 350 people attended, which Kaymen thought was “quite a lot.” Win Way, a member of the University of Vermont faculty (“the establishment” as Kaymen called it), brought air of the academy to the 1976 conference which helped transform NOFA from a group of former New York City hippies into an influential organization with scientific backing. The 1978 conference saw the “old timers… come out of the closet” to support NOFA.

Kaymen stepped down from NOFA’s presidency in 1981. Since that time, NOFA has grown, now claiming “nearly 4,000 farmers, gardeners and consumers [from] … chapters in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.” NOFA started as a co-operative promoting and facilitating information sharing and other ways to help growers farm in a natural, organic, and sustainable way. While NOFA still promotes the nine principles Kaymen originally founded it to promote, that tenth item, marketing, now plays a larger role than ever before.

Scope and contents of the collection

The CT NOFA collection contains documents from all six state branches of NOFA, with a particular concentration on Connecticut. Notable publications include issues of The Natural Farmer from 1977 to 1996, packets of rules and regulations, informational mailers, and conference booklets

Of singular value in the collection are the audio tapes. Recorded in 1998, the tapes provide a capsule history of NOFA as spelled out by some of its major players, including Kaymen and Houriet. These interviews provide an invaluable timeline from the founding of the organization in 1971 up through the 1990s.

While the collection adequately documents the history of NOFA, the real worth of this collection is as an example and explanation of how priorities have evolved since the 1960s. Three decades of The Natural Farmer show the progression of NOFA from an organization motivated by a sometimes naive idealism to an organization thriving within the realities of the 21st century. Consider this headline from 1977, the earliest issue of The Natural Farmer in the collection: “Annual Conference to Stress Relation of Government to Farming.” Compare it to a headline from 1996, the latest issue: “California Conference Considers Future of Organic Industry”.

An urban planning firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that assisted New England cities and towns with initiating and managing urban development projects. The firm had two main types of contracts, urban renewal and comprehensive community planning, and many of their projects were supported with funds designated by the Federal Housing Act of 1949.

Includes organizational histories, memoranda, correspondence, proposal guidelines, materials for citizen participation, job inventories and reports, brochures that document urban growth management and the problems of suburbanization in New England, background studies, planning reports, growth management policies, zoning bylaws and amendments, and the files of Katharine Kumala.

Historical Note

The Planning Services Group (TPSG), an urban planning firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1955 to 1975, assisted New England cities and towns with initiating and managing urban development projects. Morton Braun, who was educated in city planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and had worked at the Boston division of Slum Clearance and Urban Redevelopment in the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency from 1951 to 1954, founded the Planning and Renewal Association in 1955 with two partners, Robert Rowland and Donald Graham. The Planning and Renewal Association was renamed The Planning Services Group in 1961, and changed from a partnership to a corporation. The firm was most active in the 1960s, employing over fifty-nine staff-members. Braun was a lecturer in the Department of Landscape Architecture and the Regional Planning program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 1968 to 1976. In 1975, Braun sold the firm to Katherine Kulmala, who operated a reduced consulting service out of her home in Carlisle, Massachusetts until 1982 when she closed the firm.

TPSG had two main types of contracts–urban renewal and comprehensive community planning. Projects in the 1950s and 1960s were initiated and supported primarily with federal funds designated by the Federal Housing Act of 1949, which sought to institute a national housing policy of “a decent home and a suitable living environment for every American family.”

TPSG held planning contracts at the local and state level in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine and New York, and established long-term relationships with Durham, NH (1969-1980), Portsmouth, NH (1963-1973), Lancaster, MA (1966-1977), and Sanford, ME (1959-1973). Projects carried out at the town level included the production of: self-help planning manuals for citizens; comprehensive town plans; open space, recreation and zoning studies and revisions; plans for central business districts; plans to recycle historic buildings; and environmental and community impact studies. At the regional level, projects included planning and design criteria for new housing developments and the production of technical manuals for other planning agencies.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Organizational histories, memoranda, correspondence, proposal guidelines, materials for citizen participation, job inventories and reports, and brochures that document urban growth management and the problems of suburbanization in New England, primarily in communities in eastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut, and New York (Long Island) from the mid-1950s through the mid-1980s. Reports, which comprise the bulk of the collection, include: background studies; planning reports (some in draft or with notations); comprehensive plans (for population, economic base, land use, circulation, private development, and community facilities); growth management policies; zoning bylaws and amendments; capital improvement programs; concept plans for tracts of land; revitalization plans for small town central business districts; open space and recreation plans; environmental impact statements; community impact studies; self-help planning guides; and technical guides. The collection also contains the files of Katherine Kulmala documenting work done independent of The Planning Services Group, including 1953 zoning policies for Boston; open space and recreation studies for Carlisle, Massachusetts, undertaken when Kulmala was a member of the Carlisle Planning Board; articles on lakeside development and recycling of buildings; and a manuscript (typescript) comparing contemporary urban development in the United States to 16th century development of new towns in Mexico (then New Spain).
