Eslinger, L. Sidney (Lucille Sidney)

Lucille “Sidney” Eslinger was born in Albany, Missouri, on November 9, 1922, the daughter of Delano R. and Alice M. Willoughby Eslinger. After graduating from high school in 1941, Eslinger turned down an opportunity to attend college to work at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, lll., partly for the opportunity to play for the Caterpillar Dieselettes, the fast-pitch softball team. Through a co-worker, Eslinger developed an interest in history, becoming an active proponent of historic preservation in central Illinois, including graveyards. After retiring from Caterpillar, she and a friend operated a dog grooming business and she was active in the Humane Society. Sidney died in Peoria on August 14, 2011.

The Eslinger Collection contains materials relating to Sidney Eslinger’s interests in gravestone studies, including four books; a research notebook about Springdale Cemetery in Peoria; a photo album of Old Peoria State Hospital; correspondence and miscellaneous materials about stone quarries and symbolism; and a photo scrapbook, “Coin Harvey: A Legend in His Time.” States represented include Illinois and Indiana.

After graduating from high school in 1941, Eslinger turned down an opportunity to attend college to accept a job at the Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Ill., in part so that she could for the Caterpillar Dieselettes, the renowned fast-pitch softball team sponsored by the company. As a mainstay of the pitching staff, Eslinger toured the nation, and at work, she became the company’s first female line inspector.

Through a co-worker, Eslinger developed a passion for history, and during her free time, became involved with several historical societies and with the cause of historic preservation. As a charter member of the Central Illinois Landmark Foundation, she helped preserve and commemorate local sites, and she was active in the Peoria County Old Settlers Association, the Tazewell County Genealogy Society, the Association for Gravestone Studies, and the Peoria Historical Society, for whom she led tours of Springdale Cemetery. After retiring from Caterpillar, Eslinger and her friend Doris Scobee operated a dog grooming business for several years, and she became an active supporter of the Humane Society. Sidney died in Peoria on August 14, 2011.

Contents of Collection

The Eslinger Collection contains materials relating to Sidney Eslinger’s interests in gravestone studies and historic sites. The most interesting items in the collection relate to William “Coin” Harvey’s eccentric failed resort at Monte Ne, in the Arkansas Ozarks. These include some ephemera and an interesting photo album depicting the ruins of the resort in 1962. The collection also includes photographs taken at cemeteries in Peoria, Ill., and Bedford, Ind., several books

including four books; a research notebook about Springdale Cemetery in Peoria; a photo album of Old Peoria State Hospital; correspondence and miscellaneous materials about stone quarries and symbolism; and a photo album, “Coin Harvey’s Watery Grave.” States represented include Illinois and Indiana.

Stanze Monument Company

Established in 1921 in St. Louis Missouri, the Stanze Monument Company was family-owned and operated until it was sold in the mid-1980s. The company custom-cut gravestones for more than sixty years and was one of the last monument companies to cut gravestones by hand.

The collection consists of gravestone, monument, and mausoleum technical and architectural drawings. Most of the tracings and drawings of headstone patterns were used to make glass molds for sand-blasting granite headstones, while the rubbings represent reproductions of designs and font sizes and styles. Some of the architectural drawings depict conceptual plans for a typical forty-acre cemetery. The drawings were transferred from the Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum in Illinois; a small portion of the materials were identified as being part of the “Gustafson Collection.”

Rotundo, Barbara

A long-time member of the English Department at the University of Albany, Barbara Rotundo was a 1942 graduate in economics at Mount Holyoke College. After the death of her husband, Joseph in 1953, Rotundo became one of the first female faculty members at Union College, and after earning a master’s degree in English at Cornell University and a doctorate in American Literature from Syracuse University, she served as an associate professor of English at the University of Albany, where she founded one of the first university writing programs in the United States. Avocationally, she was a stalwart member of the Association for Gravestone Studies, helping to broaden its scope beyond its the Colonial period to include the Victorian era. Her research included the rural cemetery movement, Mount Auburn Cemetery, white bronze (zinc) markers, and ethnic folk gravestones. Her research in these fields was presented on dozens of occasions to annual meetings of AGS, the American Culture Association, and The Pioneer America Society. In 1989, after residing in Schenectady for forty-six years, she retired to Belmont, NH, where she died in December 2004.

Consisting primarily of thousands of color slides (most digitized) and related research notebooks, the Rotundo collection is a major visual record of Victorian grave markers in the United States. The notebooks and slides are arranged by state, with an emphasis on the eastern states, and white bronze (zinc) markers also are represented in photographs and a separate research notebook. The collection also includes several rare or privately published books.

Tenney, Thomas W.

A long-time resident of Berkeley, Calif., Thomas W. Tenney and his wife Margaret took up photography in a serious way in the early 1960s. Photographing the Bay Area scene and publishing in the New York Times and elsewhere, the Tenneys became full time photographers by about 1964. For over a decade, they took summer trips to New England to photograph colonial and early national gravestones, culminating in a public exhibition of their work in 1972 at the Bolles Gallery in San Francisco.

The Tenney collection consists of several hundred scrupulously-documented images of gravestones in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and other New England states taken between 1966 and 1978. Selecting stones for “artistic rather than historical reasons,” the Tenney’s focused primarily on details of the carving and inscriptions.

Brock, Eric J.

A consulting architectural historian and urban planner based in Shreveport, Louisiana, Eric J. Brock was born in San Francisco, California, but with deep family roots in New York, New England, and the coastal Deep South. The author of sixteen books and several hundred popular and academic journal articles on Louisiana history, Brock is a member of the board and former president of the Oakland Cemetery Preservation Society of Shreveport, a former board member of the Louisiana Preservation Alliance, a member of Save Our Cemeteries of New Orleans, of Friends of New Orleans Cemeteries, and a current or former member of multiple preservation and museum organizations. Brock has a deep interest in cemetery preservation and in the multi-faceted role of cemeteries as archives of architectural, historical, genealogical, and artistic importance and as benchmarks of cultural change and development.

With an emphasis on New Orleans and Shreveport, the Brock collection consists primarily of articles and newsclippings on Jewish and other Louisiana cemeteries.

Tucker, Ralph L.

Known for his extensive research into Boston and Merrimac Valley area gravestone carvers, particularly Joseph Lamson and John Hartshorne, Ralph Tucker received the AGS Forbes Award in 1992 for his excellence in carver research. One of the attendees at the inaugural Dublin Seminar, and the first President of the Association for Gravestone Studies, Tucker served as editor of a column, “17th and 18th Century Gravestones and Carvers,” in the AGS Newletter from 1993-1999. Born on May 29, 1921 in Winthrop, Mass., Tucker attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts University, and Episcopal Theological School. He married Mildred R. Moore in 1946 and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1947. Tucker spent two years as a missionary in China, returning to serve parishes in Utah, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. In addition to extending his ministry to hospitals and prisons, he participated in 1960s Civil Rights protests in Alabama and Boston. In 1985 he went to Zimbabwe as a missionary, retiring to Maine soon thereafter where he acted as interim pastor of Grace Episcopal Church in Bath. Tucker died March 28, 2010, and was survived by his wife, four sons — Ralph, Jr., Richard R., Roger W., and Paul M. Tucker, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Tucker collection includes research notes and copies of published works stemming from Ralph Tucker’s decades of research on stone carvers and other gravestone-related topics, along with hundreds of images documenting carvers and stones in Massachusetts.

W.H. Grindol and Son

A great-grandson of Revolutionary War general Henry Haller, William H. Grindol (1840-1927) settled with his family in Decatur, Illinois, in 1864, building a successful career in the retail marble trade. Beginning in partnership with Paul F. Jones, and later with his son, Grindol advertised his firm as dealers in “all kinds of foreign and American monuments,” selling marble and granite monuments, building stone, and iron reservoir vases. He was one of the founders of the Retail Marble and Granite Dealer’s Association of Illinois, serving as President of the Central District in 1897. Grindol died in Decatur in 1927 and is buried at Fairlawn Cemetery.

Grindol and Son’s letterpress copy book contains approximately 900 outgoing letters, 1895-1900, to marble and granite suppliers, in Vermont, Massachusetts, and other states. The majority of the correspondence consists of orders for gravemarkers, with many letters including measurements and other details, along with rough sketches of monuments, decorative motifs, and inscriptions.

Mange, Arthur P.

Arthur P. Mange taught in the Biology Department at University of Massachusetts Amherst for 31 years before retiring in 1995. A co-author of numerous works in human genetics, Mange served on the chair of the Conservation Committee in Amherst, and currently serves on the Burnett Gallery Committee. In 1983, his New England images were featured in Across the Valley (from Cummington to New Salem) held at the Burnett Gallery. This exhibition was followed at the Hitchcock Center in 1984 with Delight in Familiar Forms (celebrating some well-known plants and animals), with Ring Bell to Admit Bird at the Jones Library and Net Prophet at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Architectural Sights — Big and Small, Mange’s most recent show (2002), appeared at the Burnett Gallery. In addition to exhibitions, Mange has also donated collections for fund-raising auctions at New York University, the Cooley Dickinson Hospital, the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center, the Amherst Historical Society, Jones Library, and the Amherst Community Arts Center.

His photographic collection spans more than half a century of subjects reflecting his varied interests in animals, plants, our region, gravestones, what he calls “whimsical signs,” and attention-grabbing shadows.

Background on Arthur Mange

Arthur Mange joined the Zoology Department (later the Biology Department) at the University of Massachusetts from the Midwest in 1964. He taught primarily genetics and with his wife, Elaine, co-authored several award-winning college textbooks of human genetics. Following retirement in 1997, he served on a number of committees in Amherst, including chair of the Conservation Commission, and currently serves on the Committee for the Burnett Gallery at the Jones Library in Amherst. Mange is a member of the Pioneer Valley Photographic Artists, whose members are dedicated to fine art photography. This group maintains rotating exhibits at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Bay State Hospital in Springfield, and the Nashawannuck Gallery in Easthampton.

For over half a century, Mange has taken thousands of black and white photographs of varied subjects. The pictures are from many places around the world, with about half of them from New England and the East coast. Like many photographers, Mange tries to present interesting (if possible unusual or artful), real-life images with nice composition, form, texture, and resolution. They faithfully record things that have caught his eye along the way.

Mange has participated in a score of solo or group photo shows at hospitals, libraries, banks, and other sites in Amherst, Northampton, Pelham, Hadley, Leverett, and Southampton. The subject of these shows have included mysterious images including close-ups, gravestones, plants and animals, architecture, local sights, windows, pictures taken looking down, whimsical signs, and travel pictures.

Contents of Collection

Arthur Mange’s collection of photographs consists of 339 images taken from 1965 to 2010. His subjects vary widely, from scenes around New England and New York City to scenes captured more locally from Amherst and Hadley to New Salem. Common themes include studies of nature, buildings, patterns, whimsical signs, attention-grabbing shadows, and gravestones.

Mange has used a number of single-lens reflex cameras over the years and 35-mm black and white film on multi-grade lustre-surface RC papers, with harldy any alterations except cropping and burning some unwanted highlighted areas. As of 2011, Mange has approximately 35,000 35-mm negatives of his work; from these he has printed around 2,500.

He founded Amherst Savings Bank, and was active in the Ornamental Tree Association, which planted many trees on the Town Common. In 1975 the very large Victorian house was occupied by just one elderly woman. It is now spruced up and divided into offices.

Acres and acres of flat, fertile land west of the cemetery with the Berkshire foothills to the west and the Holyoke Range to the south gives us a thrill every time we go to Northampton. Some of the parcels are in danger of being developed and the Kestrel Trust is in the forefront of preservation efforts.

Along this stretch of Maine coast, I have repeatedly tried to take wave pictures that might measure up to the paintings of Winslow Homer. I have never come close.

He said, “That’s funny; I designed this garden.” So said Dean Cardasis of the Landscape Architecture Department (filling in for the maintenance person, who had broken his shoulder).

Contents of Collection

Mange has used a number of single-lens reflex cameras over the years and 35-mm black and white film on multi-grade luster-surface RC papers, with hardly any alterations except cropping and burning some unwanted highlighted areas. As of 2011, Mange has approximately 35,000 35-mm negatives of his work; from these he has printed around 2,500.

The stream makes a 100-yard above- ground appearance behind the Regional High School. Keywords: Building, run-down. Location: Amherst, Massachusettes. Mr. Conkey (1823-1875), a lawyer, was moderator of Amherst Town Meeting for a record-setting 26 years. He founded Amherst Savings Bank, and was active in the Ornamental Tree Association, which planted many trees on the Town Common. In 1975 the very large Victorian house was occupied by just one elderly woman. It is now spruced up and divided into offices.

Historic Burying Grounds Initiative

With the approach of the American Bicentennial in 1976, concern grew among historic preservationists in Boston that the city’s old cemeteries and grave markers were showing the damage of many decades of harsh weather and poor maintenance. Led by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the Boston Landmarks Commission, and The Bostonian Society, with the collaboration of the Massachusetts Historical Commission, and the Association for Gravestone Studies, among others, the Historic Burying Grounds Initiative was established to develop a plan to inventory over 15,000 markers and assemble a master plan (1985, updated 1998) to care for the cemeteries in the long term. Supported by both public and private funds, the HBGI focused initially on stabilization, preservation, and restoration of historic artifacts, tomb structures, and retaining walls, and their efforts continue today.

The HBGI Collection contains reports and inventories from the first phase of work carried out by the Initiative, focusing on the Dorchester North, Central, Copp’s Hill, Eliot, Granary, Kings Chapel, and Phipps Street Burying Grounds. The collection also contains two editions of the Manual for Preservation prepared by the HBGI.

Margaret R. Jenks has been a family genealogist since 1964 and a cemetery transcriber since 1978. A prolific writer, she has published books listing all the cemetery inscriptions of the twenty-seven towns in Rutland County, Vermont, and of Granville, Washington County, New York, and she has conducted research on the stonecarvers of Rutland County. She served six years as a trustee of the Association for Gravestone Studies.

The Jenks collection is comprised of eighteen volumes containing exhaustive documentation of gravestone inscriptions from the following cemeteries in Vermont: Benson, Brandon, Castleton, Chittenden, Clarendon, Danby, Fair Haven, Granville (Washington County), Hubbardston, Ira, Mendon, Middleton, Mount Holly, Mt. Tabor, Pawlet, Pittsfield, Pittsford, Poultney, Proctor, Putney, Rutland, Sherburne, Shrewsbury, Sudbury, Tinmouth, Wallingford, Wells, West Haven, West Rutland.
