The papers of Gerry Jones contain a mix of ephemera dating from his days as one of the most active members of the MAC Class of 1903. Beginning with a fine record book documenting meetings of the class from their freshman year through graduation, the collection includes menus, programs, and dance cards related to class events. Of particular interest is a menu from the first football banquet in 1902, celebrating one of the most successful teams of the MAC era, going 8-1 during the fall 1901.

Born in Hansport, Nova Scotia, on August 24, 1878, Gerald Denison Jones graduated from the Framingham High School and Academy (1899) before entering the Massachusetts Agricultural College with the class of 1903. Known by his peers for his wit, “Gerry” Jones was an active presence on campus as class Secretary and Treasurer and as a member of the QTV Fraternity, the staff of the Index, and the class football and baseball teams.

Shortly after graduation, Jones began work as a foreman on a local onion farm owned by Walter D. Cowls, soon becoming his superintendent of trucking. In June 1907, he married Cowls’ daughter Sarah, and thereafter joined his father-in-law in his various enterprises, which included substantial lumbering, farming, and realty interests. Jones became a well-respected figure in the Amherst community, serving on the board of investment for the Amherst Savings Bank during the mid-1930s and as a representative to the General Court from Hampshire County. Active in civic and church affairs, he supported both St. Andrews Episcopal Church in North Amherst and the North Congregational Church for many years and was a member of the Pacific Masonic Lodge in Amherst. At the time of his death on April 21, 1968, Jones was president of W.D. Cowls, Inc.

The collection also includes photographs of what appears to be an early student protest and of three members of the football team, brief class notes from courses taken by Jones in 1903 on entomology (presumably taught by Charles Fernald) and physiological botany, and some banners, bunting, and other fabric signs, probably related to an early reunion of the Class of 1903.

Born on Jan. 4, 1863, and raised in Montague, Mass., Charles Wellington Clapp entered Massachusetts Agricultural College as a freshman during the fall 1882. Shouldering the standard coursework in agriculture and engineering, Clapp graduated with the class of 1886 and went on to a career as a civil engineer in Greenfield, Mass.

Written by Clapp to his sister Mary during his undergraduate years at MAC, the 31 letters in this collection provide a lighthearted and engaging glimpse into the academic work and extra-curricular activities of a typical early student at Mass Aggie. Noteworthy among these letters are early references to football being played at the college and an effective hand-drawn map of campus, both from 1882.

A member of the Massachusetts Agricultural College class of 1919, Ervin Sidney Stockwell, Jr. (1898-1983) was born in Winthrop, Mass., to Grace Cobb and E. Sidney Cobb, Sr., a successful business man and owner of a wholesale dairy. Entering MAC as a freshman in 1915, Stockwell, Jr., studied agricultural economics and during his time in Amherst, took part in the college debate team, winning his class award for oratory, and dramatics with the Roister Doisters. He performed military service in 1918 at Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Camp Lee, Va. Stockwell went on to found a successful custom-house brokerage in Boston, E. Sidney Import Export, and was followed at his alma mater by his son and great-grandson.

The extensive correspondence between Sidney Stockwell and his mother, going in both directions, provides a remarkably in-depth perspective on a typical undergraduate’s life at Massachusetts Agricultural College during the time of the First World War, a period when MAC was considered an innovator in popular education. The letters touch on the typical issues of academic life and social activity, Stockwell’s hopes for the future, his military service and the war. Following graduation, Stockwell undertook an adventurous two year trip in which he worked his way westward across the country, traveling by rail and foot through the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana, Washington state and California, taking odd jobs to earn his keep and writing home regularly to describe his journey. An oral history with Stockwell is available in the University Archives as part of the Class of 1919 project.

The entomologist Charles F. Clagg was born in Barnstable, Mass., in 1904 and received his bachelor of science degree from the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1927. Although never able to complete his graduate degree, Clagg enjoyed a long and productive career in entomology. Listed as a graduate student at MAC in 1929-1930, Clagg took part in an extensive collecting trip to the Philippines in 1930 and 1931. Beginning in June 1930 near Calian in Davao del Sur (Mindanao), Clagg spent several months collecting flies in and around the active Mount Apo volcano, in the Lawa and Calian river valleys, and in the Lalun mountains, traveling to the eastern peninsula of Davao early in 1931. He remained in the Pacific region later in his career, working as an entomologist for the U.S. Navy.

The twenty photographs taken by Charles F. Clagg in 1930 document his entomological collecting trip to Davao, Mindanao, in the Philippines. Primarily personal in nature, rather than professional, they were taken on Clagg’s visit to a coconut plantation run by American expatriates Henry and George Pahl and illustrate the local sights in Davao, including work in harvesting coconuts and the production of copra, the production of Manilla hemp, a horse fight at Calian, and Manobos who came to the plantation trade. Also included are three photographs of Clagg’s quarters while collecting high in the Lalun Mountains. The captions provided by Clagg on the back of each photograph have been transcribed verbatim.

His efforts contributed to the description of several new species of dipterids, lepidostomatids, phorids, and hemipterids.

Until the early 1970s, Clagg worked as an entomologist for the U.S. Navy, assigned for much of the time to the District Public Works Office for the 14th Naval District at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Active professionally, he was an officer and honorary member of the Hawaiian Entomological Society. He died in Barnstable in 1989.

A prominent member of the Massachusetts Agricultural College Class of 1876, George A. Parker (1853-1926) began a career in landscape gardening and the development of parks shortly after graduation. Shortly after the turn of the century, he was appointed Superintendent of Parks in Hartford, Conn., helping to develop Colt Park and a number of smaller properties that turned the city into one of the models for New England. He resigned from his in January 1926 and died later that year from heart disease.

The Parker Album is a more extensive version of the standard class album for 1876, featuring not only albumen portraits mounted on thick stock of the faculty and students, but almost fifty views of campus. Among these are uncommon images of the major academic buildings, the chapel, and hash house, but also interior and exterior shots of buildings on campus, such as the Botanic Museum and the Durfee greenhouses, and images of the students in military drill. All photographs were taken John L. Lovell of Amherst.

Historical Note

Born in Pelham, New Hampshire, in 1882, Frederick A. Cutter attended Lowell High School before enrolling into the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1902. One of the first students on a five year plan, Cutter graduated as a member of the class of 1907. During his time at the college, he became known for his jovial nature, earning the nickname “Joke,” and for his involvement in athletics. The center on the varsity football team, he was also a forward on the basketball team, manager of the baseball team, and a member of the Undergraduate Athletic Board. In his equally active social life, he served as head of the Komical Klub, a Vaudeville cast member, and he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.

After graduating, Cutter established a successful tree care business in Orange, New Jersey.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

A quirky reflection of an undergraduate’s life at Massachusetts Agricultural College at the turn of the twentieth century, the Frederick A. Cutter collection includes photographs of the 1907 football team and the 1906 and 1907 members of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, a uniform for the 1907 M.A.C. basketball team, large MAC pennants and banners, and a Lowell High School sweater from 1902. There is also a collection of 1907 M.A.C. football gear, including cleats and a nose guard.

Worthy of note is a photograph of the graduating class of 1907, which includes one of the university’s first female graduates, Susie D. Livers, as well as one of its first African American graduates, John T. Caruthers. Cutter’s collection also contains the earliest extant M.A.C. basketball uniform. Among the remainder of the collection are some reunion paraphernalia from the class of 1907, Columbia University Calendars for 1909 and 1910, the 1914 M.A.C. bulletin, a 1907 commencement program from Mount Holyoke College, and Cutter’s own Zoology notebook. The collection is organized chronologically, with textiles housed in separate boxes.

Harriet McLane, daughter of Frederick A. Cutter, graciously donated this collection to University Archives on November 14, 2000. After her father’s passing, McLane and her sister inherited his house, located in New Jersey, and all his belongings. McLane moved to Palm Springs California, while her sister moved into their childhood home. McLane discovered the collection in a box in the attic of her sister’s house while cleaning it out after her unfortunate passing. After she discovered the significance of the contents of the box she contacted Michael Milewski of the University Archives and chose to donate the collection to the University her father loved so much.

Born in Worcester, Mass., in 1875, Charles A. Peters studied chemistry under Charles Goessmann at Massachusetts Agricultural College, graduating with the class of 1897. After receiving his doctorate at Yale in 1901, he joined the faculty at the University of Idaho for several years before completing his education with two years of post-doctoral work in Berlin (1908-1910). Offered the chance to return to his alma mater in 1912, Peters became a cornerstone of instruction in chemistry, teaching courses for many years in quantitative analysis, inorganic chemistry, and analytical chemistry, and serving as chair of the department. Although he retired when he reached the mandatory age in 1945, Peters remained in Amherst. In 1970, he was presented a gold cane by the Amherst selectmen as the town’s oldest man. He died on Oct. 4, 1973, at the age of 99.

A small, but diverse collection, the Peters Papers include an interesting assortment of materials from the early years of Charles Peters’ association with the Massachusetts Agricultural College. In addition to an assortment of correspondence, primarily from the turn of the 20th century, the collection includes a series of notes taken during undergraduate classes in economic botany, horticulture, chemistry, agriculture, and organic chemistry, some teaching materials, and personal photographs.
