Lyman, Frank

A manufacturer of electronics and radio communications, Frank Lyman was a native of Northampton and graduate of the Williston Academy and Harvard (class of 1931). The grandson of Joseph Lyman and great-nephew of Benjamin Smith Lyman, Lyman joined Harvey Radio in the late 1930s, during a time when it was building radio transmitting equipment, purchasing the company in 1940 and becoming its president. An investor in Boston-area radio stations, Lyman oversaw the company’s post-transition into the manufacture of of autmomatic machines and tooling and its merger into the electronics firm, Cambridge Thermionic Corporation (later renamed Cambion) in 1968. Lyman died in 1992, followed by his wife, Jeanne (Sargent), in 2005.

The Lyman Papers contain business correspondence and associated documents relating to both Harvey Radio Corporation and Cambridge Thermionic Corporation, along with associated materials pertaining to Frank Lyman’s investments and personal interests. Beginning during his time at the Williston Academy and extending through his adult life, the collection includes Lyman’s diaries and a small amount of personal correspondence.

Green, Josiah

Josiah Green and Co. were pioneering manufacturers of mass produced pegged boots, one of the earliest and largest firms of its kind in Central Massachusetts. Founded by Josiah Green in the town of Leicester in 1812, the firm relocated to Spencer in 1816 or 1817 and erected its first factory there in 1834. In 1850, J. Green and Co. was the largest of six major shoe- and boot-manufacturers in town, though it lost market share thereafter. Green ran the company until control passed to his sons in 1867.

The records of Josiah Green and Co. document the growth and peak years of operation of one of the most important high-volume manufacturers of boots in central Massachusetts. Although the account books and ledgers extend back into the 1820s, the bulk of the correspondence dates from 1889-1894, when Josiah’s sons controlled the firm and while it was losing ground to its competitors. Although sporadic and incomplete, the correspondence offers a glimpse into the manner in which Green’s business was conducted during a period when the firm sold to a wide network of wholesalers and jobbers in the northeast and Midwest. Most of the correspondence concerns placement or fulfillment of orders and issues over prices and payment. The collection contains four press copybooks containing outgoing letters for the years 1889-1892 and 1904-1905.

Historical Note

Early in the nineteenth century, Worcester County, Massachusetts, became on the of the first regions in the state to experience rapid industrialization, and the small town of Spencer become a center for the manufacture of wire, boots, and shoes. The development of the shoe and boot industry began as a cottage industry in 1809 when the inauspicious Charles Watson produced a few dozen pairs for which he never received payment. In nearby Leicester, however, Josiah Green (1792-1876) and his brother Nathaniel found greater success when they began making shoes and boots in about 1811. Working from the garret of their mother’s house, 19 year-old Josiah began producing boots at $1.25 per pair. The scant profits he made from the sale of his boots in Boston encouraged him to continue, and the start of the War in 1812 added further impetus. In 1812, the brothers turned to Albany to market their goods, selling to military contractors at a profitable $2.25 per pair.

After dissolving his partnership with his brother at the end of the war, Josiah relocated to Spencer in 1816 or 1817, where he became the first of several large-scale manufacturers of shoes and boots. Early in his career, Green began to use pegging to attach heels and soles, producing a harder wearing product while driving down cost and increasing the rate of production. Widely known for the quality of his work, Green’s trade to the wholesale market grew rapidly, and by 1834, he erected a four story factory on the Boston Post Road, over which sat a sign reading “Josiah Green’s boot manufactory, established 1812.” Although Green was the largest of Spencer’s six major shoe- and boot-manufacturers in 1850, by the eve of the Civil War his firm had begun to lose market share to local competitors such Isaac Prouty, C. and G. Watson, and A.T. and E. Jones.

Green was married twice, first in 1816 to Tamer Watson (d.1820) and then to Sybil Underwood in 1821. In addition to two children by his first marriage, Josiah had eight children with Sybil. He continued in the boot trade until retiring in 1867, when his sons assumed control of the company. Green died on Dec. 28, 1876, and the company continued in operation into the twentieth century.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Harris, Carl C.

An inventor, entrepreneur, and corporate executive, Carl C. Harris was the third of four generations of his family to help manage the Rodney Hunt Company, a major manufacturer of waterwheels, turbines, and textile machinery based in Orange, Mass. While still in high school in 1898, Harris already displayed a sharp business and technical eye, establishing the first telephone company in Orange, and he began his career after graduation from Worcester Polytechnical Institute, working as a draftsman for GE and then as a superintendent at Rodney Hunt. After a brief stint at the Simplex Time Recorder Company in Gardner, Harris returned to Rodney Hunt for good in 1912. After acquiring a controlling interest in 1917, he remained with the company in several capacities through the Depression and Second World War, serving as general manager, vice president, and treasurer, and from 1938-1947, as president. Throughout his career, Harris remained active in developing or improving a variety of new products and processes, registering a total of 99 patents, and he regularly used his offices at Rodney Hunt to launch other, smaller enterprises, including the Slencil Company,which manufactured mechanical pencils; Riveto, which produced toys and a paper fastening device; and Speed-Mo, a manufacturer of a moistening pad system. Harris retired in 1956 and died four years later in Orange at the age of 79.

The Harris Papers are centered closely on the entrepreneurial activity of Carl C. Harris, and include a particularly thick set of business records for the Slencil Company (ca.1935-1960) and the Riveto Company (1930s-1940s), and the slender record book of the Home Telephone Company. In addition to these, the collection includes many dozen slencils, including prototypes, speciality models, presentation sets, store displays, and marketing designs; examples of Riveto toys, Simplex inventions, flotation devices, and other oddities invented by Harris, along with the associated patents.

Lamson and Goodnow

In 1834, Silas Lamson devised a curved snath that greatly improved the efficiency of the scythe, and riding the commercial success of his invention, Lamson, his sons Ebenezer and Nathaniel, and partner Abel Goodnow, founded the manufacturing firm of Lamson and Goodnow in Shelburne Falls, Mass., in 1837. Early in its history, Lamson and Goodnow recruited skilled workers from cutlery centers in England and Germany and began manufacturing the high quality knives and tableware that have remained the center of their production ever since. The firm was a major contributor to the region’s transformation from a primarily agricultural to an industrial economy, and by the time of the Civil War, they helped establish the Connecticut River Valley had emerged as the center of American cutlery production. At vartious points during their history, Lamson and Goodnow have been involved in the manufacture of arms (e.g. the Springfield Rifle), sewing machines, agricultural implements, and other tools. They remain active in the production of cutlery, trade tools, and kitchenware.

The Lamson and Goodnow records contain relatively dense documentation of a major manufacturer of cutlery and agricultural implements from roughly the time of its founding in 1837 through shortly after the turn of the twentieth century. In addition to account books, records of orders, sales, and production, and a dizzying array of canceled checks, receipts, and trade cards, the collection includes correspondence from field agents and customers that document the growth of the company during the first 75 years of its operation.

Northampton Cutlery Company

The Northampton Cutlery Company was among the major firms in a region known for high quality cutlery manufacture. Incorporated in 1871 with Judge Samuel L. Hinckley, its largest stockholder, as its first President, the company was located along the Mill River in Northampton, Massachusetts, where operations continued until its closing in 1987.

Records document company operations and technology used in the cutlery manufacturing process, as well as details about employment of immigrant and working class families in the region. Includes administrative, legal, and financial records; correspondence; personnel and labor relations files; and production schedules and specifications.

Historical Note

The Northampton Cutlery Company was incorporated in 1871 with Judge Samuel L. Hinckley, its largest stockholder, as its first President. The property was purchased from J. H. Lyman and located along the Mill River in Northampton, Massachusetts on a site in which previous manufacturing plants had operated, beginning with Northampton Papermills (1836-1848), and subsequently Hampshire Flax & Hemp Company (1848-1850), Bay State Tool Manufacturing Company (1854-1858), Bay State Hardware Company (1858-1870), and Riverside Cutlery Company (1870-1871). Cutlery production began as a sideline venture for Bay State Tool during the Civil War, a time when 81% of cutlery produced in the United States was made in plants in Massachusetts and Connecticut. In 1885, a Knights of Labor Assembly of knife grinders was established in Northampton, considered by the Northampton Tercentenary Commission to be the first union of”real significance” in the town. The company closed in 1987.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Records document company operations and technology used in the cutlery manufacturing process, as well as details about employment of immigrant and working class families in the region. Records include: company histories; by-laws; deeds; board of directors meeting minutes; stockholders’ certificates and meeting minutes; correspondence; ledgers, cashbooks, price lists, and product catalogs; auditor’s reports, annual operating statements and tax reports and returns; job surveys, reports, plans, and a wage study; payroll ledgers, lists of employees, employees’ census sheets and factory notices; production schedules; records that document labor relations including negotiations, unemployment cases, and union communications and greivances; and machinery specifications, plot and sewer plans, a scrapbook, photographs, and samples.

Rodney Hunt Company

The Rodney Hunt Company Records document the operation of one of the region’s major producers of textile machinery, water wheels, turbines, and other specialty industrial products. Founded in Orange, Massachusetts, in 1840, the company was incorporated in 1873. Still an active concern, it continues to sell its products in international markets.

Due to a fire in 1882, and several floods, relatively few early records of the Rodney Hunt Company survive, but from the time of its incorporation in 1873, documentation improves, with nearly complete coverage from the period 1883–1914. The collection provides an excellent introduction to the history of technology and industry in 19th- and 20th-century Massachusetts. Of particular note is the incoming correspondence from 1876 to 1903, which is nearly complete. Other materials include company histories, correspondence, board minutes, blueprints, installation drawings, sketchbook drawings, patents, payroll ledgers, account books, price lists, sales books, brochures, catalogs, newsletters, subject files and photographs.

Historical Note

The Rodney Hunt Company, founded in Orange, Massachusetts in the 1840s, built textile machinery, water wheels, turbines, and other specialty industrial products. Although based in Orange, it competed in international markets in its specialties.

Historical Note

1810	Mr. Rodney Hunt born in Ashburnham (Town of Orange, Massachusetts incorporated) on July 10.
ca. 1840	Rodney Hunt begins working in a household furniture plant run by Reuben Harris.
1844-1858	Rodney Hunt moves permanently to a farm in Orange. He works as general millwright in different cotton-, woolen-, saw-, and grist-mills in the Orange area.
1846	David Flint begins working for Rodney Hunt.
1855	James Waite begins working for Rodney Hunt.
1859	Rodney Hunt builds his first textile machine, a fulling mill, and employs a few workmen. He also purchases a shop on Millers River.
1861-1865	During the Civil War the Rodney Hunt Company grows as the demand for textiles increases. Rodney Hunt begins to make finishing equipment for John Mills Wool Fulling Mills in Partridgeville and Athol, Massachusetts.
1865	Partnership is formed, “Hunt, Waite, & Flint.”
1869	Rodney Hunt builds his first water turbine.
1873	Rodney Hunt Machine Company is incorporated.
1878	Work force of 34.
1879	Nelson Harris comes to Orange to work for Rodney Hunt.
1881	Roscoe White is hired by William Harris; hethereafter works for 18 years in the eastern part of the state setting up and installing water wheels for the many customers Rodney Hunt Company has in that area.
1882	A fire on January 24, 1882 destroys some company records (but not nearly as much as was expected, since most records were stored in an old iron safe which was salvaged after the fire) and nearly all of the company’s buildings and equipment. A circular letter is sent March 1, 1882 to all customers stating the company’s intention to remain in business. Focus of activity shifts to a new site (present day site) about one-half mile east of the former site. Nelson Harris designs a new foundry, machine shop, pattern shop and other buildings on this new site. Rodney Hunt Machine Company sells a small parcel of land, the remaining foundry shop and their interests in the water rights to the New Home Sewing Machine Company for 85,000.
1886	Nelson Harris receives patent on “Hunt Turbine.”
1887	Nelson Harris becomes superintendent of the firm; the first of many floods which affect company operation occurs.
1888	Elbridge Harris moves to Malden, Massachusetts and establishes a “Boston office” at 70 Kirby Street.
1889	Rodney Hunt dies at the age of 78 on May 24, 1889; Elbridge Harris becomes president.
1891	The company employs about 125 men.
1892	Nelson Harris makes plans, for a new machine shop (east of old one) and additional machinery
1894	Nelson Harris arranges with the Jolly brothers, of Holyoke Machine Company, to purchase some of their turbine designs. By incorporating features they patent the Hunt-McCormick Turbine. William O. Harris follows his father, Elbridge Harris to Malden. William becomes the clerk of the company and works in the new Boston office.
1897	All boiler plate work for flumes, draft tubes and penstocks, which had been previously contracted to outside companies, is hereafter done at Rodney Hunt; another flood occurs.
1899	William “Billy” Baines starts working for the company as an apprentice, and by 1905 is the foreman of the assembly department, working on water wheel turbines, governors, rotary fire pumps, etc.
1900	A major flood causes some damage to the company.
ca. 1900	Miss Norcross is the first woman to work for the company, as a bookkeeper.
1903	Carl Harris begins working for company.
1906	Elbridge Harris dies, Nelson Harris becomes president.
1907	The company buys property with water rights at Partridgeville and renames the lake to Lake Rohunta.
1908	Lake Rohunta power station built.
1910-1913	Carl Harris commutes by train to work for the Simplex Time Recorder Company in Gardner, eventually patenting several designs for them.
1914	About 100 men work at the company.
1917	Carl Harris acquires controlling interest in the Rodney Hunt Company.
1919	Carl Harris makes floor plans and converts what is then a lumber shed to a roll manufacturing shop.
1924	Rebuilding and adding on to the office is carried out.
1929	Onset of depression and period of economic loss. Also Messrs. Riggs and Lombard, who had been engineers in the textile department, leave Rodney Hunt, taking with them various drawings and information. They establish a competitive company in Lowell, Massachusetts.
1930s	The development of the use of stainless steel for textile machinery is a great “first” for Rodney Hunt. The company is the first ever to erect a building specifically designed for stainless steel fabrication.
1932	The use of a time clock record of employees’ time begins, and rates of all salaried employees are readjusted to approximate a 15% cut from October 11, 1931 rates.
1935	The Water Control Apparatus Division is formed.
1936	Fire destroys the boiler plate building. A major flood results in several feet of water and ice accumulating in the office which destroys records, furniture and equipment. Damage is greatest to the shops and foundry, where machinery had to be replaced or repaired.
1938	As a result of the “great” hurricane and flood, Rodney Hunt suffers severe losses, not, only to the main plant but also to Lake Rohunta where the dam and power station are washed away.
1940s	Economic stability resumes; company grows and prospers. During World War II the armed services once again call for a dramatic increase in uniform fabric. Rodney Hunt helps the war effort by keeping textile mills supplied with finishing machinery.
1947	Earl Harris starts working for company.
1950s	The company has five divisions: Textile Machinery, Water Wheels, Water Control Equipment, Industrial Rolls, and Process Equipment.
1955	Water wheel division is sold due to decreased demand for turbines, a special provision is made not to sell the Brook Water Wheel Division.
1956	Carl Harris retires; Earl Harris becomes president, pension plan established.
1960	Carl Harris dies.
1966	Name is changed to the Rodney Hunt Company.
1968	Process equipment division is sold.
1969	Establishment of five year building improvement plan.
1975	Textile machinery division is sold.
1976	Channing C. Harris writes “The History of Rodney Hunt Company, Orange Massachusetts.” At this time the company employs about 300 people and has one of the most, modern foundries in the East.
1989	Continues to operate a large modern Plant at Orange.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Records document the administration, operation, production and labor of the Hunt Company from its early history as a machine shop to its eventual establishment, through economic depression, fire and floods, as an industrial manufacturer of textile machinery, water wheels, turbines, and water control equipment. Company histories, correspondence, board minutes, blueprints, installation drawings, sketchbook drawings, patents, payroll ledgers, account books, price lists, sales books, brochures, catalogs, newsletters, subject files and photographs comprise the collection.

All of the loose volumes have a separate corresponding inventory sheet summarizing physical characteristics, description, and content of each volume. These sheets are located in folders throughout the collection as dictated by the overall collection arrangement. The specific folder(s) should be consulted for a general overview of each volume. Each of the volumes has been assigned a control number which identifies its location in the 150 loose volumes physically grouped at the end of the collection.

Series 1. Organization and Administration	1872-1942	6 volumes, 1 box, 0.25 linear ft.
The activities of the Rodney Hunt Company Board of Directors and Stock-Holders (1872-1942) are revealed in their stock certificates books and Stock-Holders meeting records contained in Sub-series 1. Records of legal and property transactions, found in Sub-series 2, are limited to copyright and patent information (1897-1909) and one proposal with Winthrop Mills Co. (1921).


Series 2. Executive	1871-1979	55 volumes, 280 boxes, 113.25 linear ft.
Scope and content: Sub-series 1 is comprised of a collection of general files including “Historic Records Inventory Project” (1979), “History of the Rodney Hunt Company”(1976), and miscellaneous items (1887-1979) such as insurance policies, newsletters, notes, reports, subject files and tax hills. By far the largest volume of records in the whole collection is contained in Sub-series 2: Correspondence, In/Out. The in-coming correspondence, dating from 1876 to 1903 is basically complete with only occasional gaps. Of special interest are boxes 226 and 227 which hold the correspondence of William O. Harris (1903-1907) from his Boston office to the Rodney Hunt Company main office in Orange. Only a sample selection of the 1917/1918 and 1926/1927 in-coming correspondence was taken because of the poor physical condition of the stored records. A large number (54) of letter copying books (1871-1903) containing duplicate out-going correspondence survived the several floods to which the records were exposed. Volumes 14 and 51 document settlements (1888-1893) between Rodney Hunt and outside companies. The remainder of this series consists of fragments of in/out correspondence files for the years 1911-1914. Related material: Additional correspondence, pertaining to sales, can be found in Series 5, Sub-series 3.


Series 3. Financial	1869-1938, n.d.	56 volumes, 2 boxes, 1.25 linear ft.
The financial accounts (1869-1938), comprising 56 volumes and additional documentation, represent the most complete record in any series. This series ranges from accounts with the Orange National Bank to a ledger of entries for the Hydro-Electric Power Plant at Lake Rohunta. These daily, weekly and monthly accounts document the financial workings of this ever-changing company.


Series 4. Purchasing	1887-1888	1 box, 0.25 linear ft.
This series is limited to bills and receipts for the years 1887-1888, documenting purchases of raw materials and services rendered.


Series 5. Sales	1878-1978, n.d.	23 volumes, 6 boxes, 3 linear ft.
Sales records are divided into three major sub-series, as follows: Accounts, which consist principally of traveling salesmen’s expense account books, express charges, orderbooks, price lists, sales books and journals; Advertising materials, which include articles about Rodney Hunt Co. (1947-1978), brochures (1960s), catalogues (1878-1903), newsletters (1940s-1960s), circulars, reference materials and miscellaneous items for gate/hoists, rolls, textile machinery, water wheels and miscellaneous production items; and Correspondence, comprised of address lists (including a 1969 export list), bills for woolen machinery, water wheels and mill work, reference information and subject files for parts and machinery (1912-1913).


Series 6. Labor	1869-1943, n.d.	8 volumes, 10 boxes, 5.75 linear ft.
The records are divided into applications/benefits and payroll accounts. For the most part, the applications and benefits files center on the years 1910-1920. Especially interesting are the Liberty Loan (war bonds) records which detail the employees’ and company’s support of WWI. An excellent collection of payroll accounts has also survived. Payroll ledgers span the years 1869-1943 with only one gap for the years 1919-1927. Also noteworthy are the bills for work, expenses and installation of machinery (1880s and 1890s).


Series 7. Production	1873-1915, n.d.	2 volumes, 6 boxes, 2.75 linear ft.
Scope and content: Blueprints and specifications (1873-1907) are very well represented in this series. These detailed drawings comprise the very heart and soul of the Rodney Hunt Company. Additional production records detail raw materials, stock inventory and sales inventory accounts. Series 8. Subsidiaries	1907-1910, n.d.	2 boxes, 1 linear ft.
This interesting collection of Carl Harris’ “side-line” undertakings consists of files from the Harris Register Company, other “Adder Companies”, C.C. Harris & Co. (unigraph) and Rivet-O Manufacturing Co. Items included in this series range from advertisements to actual “working models”. One piece of personal correspondence (folder 9) is between C.C. Harris and his uncle Ike for a loan of money to start up a company in 1909.


Series 9. Personal – (Mr. and Mrs. Carl C. Harris)	1889-1940	1 box, 0.25 linear ft.
Included are some personal papers of Mr. and Mrs. Carl C. Harris. It appears that Mr. Harris kept some of his private papers (1906-1909) interfiled with the Rodney Hunt Company records. This series was gathered from fragmented and routine correspondence files and could possibly represent only part of what is in the collection.


Series 10. Reference Materials	1840-1968, n.d.	6 boxes, 3 linear ft.
Scope and content: This collection of miscellanea and published patents represents reference materials used by various individuals within the company in the daily performance of their jobs. Copies of labor publications and tax laws are also included in this series. The numerous patents, are unfortunately all from other companies or individuals. They are for the most part concerned with water wheels, turbines, tidal engines, rotary pumps, centrifugal pumps and paper mill machinery; also included is one file on time keeping devices. Related material: “Associated Industries of Massachusetts” booklets and bulletins (1918-1923) were separated and relocated in MS 155).

This final series contains 11 folders of miscellaneous photographs taken from the previous 10 series and from outside sources. Especially interesting is the article on the history of R.H.C., “A Bicentennial Salute: Rodney Hunt Co. Since 1840″ done in 1979, and the photographic reproductions of the very early sketchbook (1874-1877) which is still in custody of the Rodney Hunt Company.

An innovator and entrepreneur, Sidney Topol was a contributor to several key developments in the telecommunications industries in the latter half of the twentieth century. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts (1947) and an engineer and executive at Raytheon and later Scientific-Atlanta, Topol’s expertise in microwave systems led to the development of the first effective portable television relay links, allowing broadcasts from even remote areas, and his foray into satellite technologies in the 1960s provided the foundation for building the emerging cable television industry, permitting the transmission of transoceanic television broadcasts. Since retiring in the early 1990s, Topol has been engaged in philanthropic work, contributing to the educational and cultural life in Boston and Atlanta.

A pioneer in satellite technologies and entrepreneurial leader of Scientific-Atlanta, Sidney Topol’s career spanned the nuclear age and space age and helped spur the globalization of telecommunication. His work on microwave systems with Raytheon in the 1950s and with satellite in the 1960s and 1970s helped lay the foundation for overseas broadcasting and made the cable television industry into a practical reality.

Born on Dec. 28, 1924, the son of Polish immigrants, Topol was a first generation American raised in a hard-working family in Dorchester. After an exceptional education at the Boston Latin School, and not yet 17 years old, Topol enrolled at Massachusetts State College in 1941 with the intention of studying chemistry, although Pearl Harbor changed that before his first semester had ended. Shortly after turning 18, he enlisted for service in the Army Air Corps and won admittance into a highly selective program to train meteorologists at the University of Michigan. When that program became over-enrolled just four months later, he chose to become a communications officer and was asked to join an elite group accepted into the radar school at Harvard and MIT, where he learned the details of every airborne radar known at the time. His stint in the Air Corps included nearly a year as a telephone officer in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan, where he was introduced to point to point microwave, and established a solid foundation for his future career.

With the credits he had earned in the service, Topol completed his BS in physics at the University of Massachusetts after only one more semester, and he was immediately hired by the Naval Research Laboratory as a Physicist. Assigned to a pioneering project on helical antennas working out of the radiation lab, Topol thrived at work, but after only two years in Washington, he decided to pursue a graduate degree under Samuel Silver, formerly of MIT but now at the University of California Berkeley. He realized quickly, however, that he enjoyed work more than study, and in 1949, he accepted an offer with Raytheon in Newton, Mass., to work on antenna design, making use of both the radar and antenna training he had received in the military.

Raytheon was an industry leader in communications technology, and Topol soon was author of several patents in antennas, including one that became the standard transportable radar used by NATO. He switched to point to point microwave design in about 1950, having gotten bored with antennas, and became a project engineer for a portable television relay link for electronic news gathering (ENG), and his work had strong implications for transmission in color and for the beginnings of standardization in the industry. The portable link was introduced at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in 1953.

Topol rose quickly at Raytheon, become Engineering Manager and then Director of Marketing for Raytheon-Europe, where he helped form Selenia Telecommunications, a highly-profitable joint venture in microwave technologies with Fin Mecannica, winning an early contract to build a microwave radar network to tie together the radars in Sweden. After several years working as General Manager for Selenia in Rome, he returned to the United States in 1965 to become General Manager of the Communications Division in Norwood, Mass.

Raytheon had begun work on satellite communications in the aftermath of Sputnik, and although he had begun thinking about satellites while in Europe, the technologies were still evolving. At Norwood, Topol helped oversee construction of the first global-scale “earth station” satellite dishes for the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT), which bounced voice and television transmissions off of stationary orbiting satellites as a means of distributing the signal around the world. The earth stations allowed, for the first time, the transmission of transoceanic television broadcasts without the need for relay links, much less wire connections.

In 1971, Topol was lured away from Raytheon to join a small, twenty-year old telecommunications manufacturing firm in Georgia, Scientific-Atlanta. Given “free rein and the ability to make decisions” autonomously, Topol was able to focus his attention on communications technology, rather than the military applications that were core activities at Raytheon. Drawing on his expertise in satellite systems, Topol recognized an opportunity in the cable television industry, allowing cable companies to use satellite links to deliver content ranging from uncut films to sports broadcasts, but also an opportunity to develop television receiving equipment. By stepping up production of earth stations, he helped make satellite communication cost effective for cable companies, using “forward pricing” — selling dishes for what they would cost when the economy of scale kicked in rather than the actual cost of production — he helped spur investment in his approach. During his 19 years with Scientific-Atlanta, Topol oversaw the expansion of the firm from $16 million in sales to over $600 million, due in large part to his success in strategically positioning the company to become a global force in the satellite and cable television industries. As President (1971-1983), CEO (1975-1987), Chairman of the Board (1978-1990), and Director (1971-1997), Topol was instrumental in the merger of cable and satellite, which along with programming developed by HBO and the development of transportable earth stations developed by TelePrompTer an manufactured by Scientific-Atlanta, helped establish satellite-delivered television for the cable industry.

Deeply involved with professional and community organizations, Topol was a key figure involved in the jockeying over the introduction of High Definition Television (HDTV) and was Chair of the Electronic Industries Association Advanced Television Committee (ATV) during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was asked to serve as co-Chair with Ann McLaughlin (former Secretary of Labor) and Jimmy Carter for the Conference on Competitiveness at the Carter Center in Atlanta (1988), and he was Chair of the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council (1993-1995). He slowly retired from Scientific-Atlanta in the 1980s and early 1990s, but was lured into becoming Director and Vice Chairman of Monitor Television Inc. (1991) before settling into a firmer retirement. Even then, he founded the Topol Group LLC, a consulting and investment firm, and expanding his charitable giving, supporting education and peace initiatives in the Middle East, among many other causes.

During his long career, Topol received many awards for his work as an innovator and entrepreneur in the satellite and cable industries, as well as for his philanthropic work. He has been awarded the Corporate Leadership Award by MIT (1980), the Vanguard Award by the National Cable Television Association (1980), the Polly Dunn Award of the Southern Cable Television Association (1991); he was an honoree of the Walter Kaitz Foundation of New York (1991) and of Women in Cable (1990); and he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Electronic Industries Association (1989), the Association’s highest award. Named Man of the Year by Boston Latin School (1982), he was also cited as Executive of Year by the College of Business Administration at the University of Georgia (1989), and is a member of the Satellite Hall of Fame (1991). His alma mater has recognized him with its Alumni Award from the School of Management (1990) and with an honorary doctorate (1985).

At Raytheon and Scientific-Atlanta, Topol’s insights into communications technologies and his business acumen were instrumental in building modern television broadcasting and the merger of satellite and cable television. The collection offers a valuable record of Topol’s role in the growth of both corporations, augmented by a suite of materials stemming from Topol’s tenure as Chair of the Electronic Industries Association Advanced Television Committee (ATV) in the 1980s and his service as Co-Chair of a major conference on Competitiveness held by the Carter Center in 1988. Since retiring from corporate life in the 1990s, Topol has been active in philanthropic work in Atlanta, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

This series is arranged chronologically by year, with an annual list of correspondents as kept in notebooks by Topol’s office staff. In some years letters were kept separately from telexes and memoranda.

Series 3. Subject files	1967-1995	14 boxes
Dating primarily from the mid-1980s to 1992, the subject files reflect the varied interests and activities of Sidney Topol during the years when he might be considered a statesman of the telecommunications industry. These files include materials pertaining to his leadership on trade missions to China and the Soviet Union, as well as his role as advisor to the federal government agencies on legislation and policy regarding international competitiveness and trade. Some files document his political activities in both an advisory and supporting role and occasionally, as in the noted Renaissance Weekends, in a social role. The series also includes files relating to Topol’s participation in industry associations such as the Electronic Industries Association and National Cable Television Association, and his commitments to education, as a participant in the Education Summit (1989), and as a member of the board for a number of institutions and programs, and as a participant in a wide array of conferences and symposia, including his stint as a Fellow at Harvard’s Center for Business and Government at the Kennedy School of Government. Finally, the subject files document Topol’s contributions to the business, civic, and cultural life in both Atlanta and Boston, as well as the honors and awads he received during his career.

Series 4. Raytheon Company	1950-1974	1 box
Beginning with Topol’s earliest days at Raytheon, this series includes a series of engineering notebooks, correspondence, proposals, reports, product brochures, and calendars documenting his work in Europe and the United States. Additional materials documenting some of the more important products developed by Topol at Raytheon, as well as photographs from various stages of his career there, are located in Series 8, while Series 2 contains most of his professional correspondence from this period.

Series 5. Scientific-Atlanta	1960-1997	13 boxes
Records of Topol’s work as an executive with Scientific-Atlanta, including Annual reports (1960-1995), Board of Directors meeting materials (1971-1997), minutes of meetings, supporting documents, correspondence, reports and financial reports, and records of three committees: the Human Resources and Compensation (1985-1989), Pension Investment (1989, 1993), and the Audit Committee (1983-1995). In addition to a series of documents used in strategic planning (1980-1994), the collection includes a set of report by McKinsey and Co. on corporate opportunities and priorities (1982). Two boxes of materials that are restricted until 2022 include information on executive compensation. Other materials in the collection relating to Topol’s time at Scientific-Atlanta can be found in Series 3 (Subject files) and Series 2 (Correspondence)

Series 6. Electronic Industries Association HDTV Committee	1985-1994	2 boxes
Files from Topol’s period as Cahir of the Electronic Industries Association HDTV Committee, including correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, reports, newsclippings, newsletters, drafts of reply comments to the Federal Communications Commission regarding the implementation of advanced tele4vision in the United States (1992), and related materials.

Series 7. Carter Center Consultation on Competitiveness	1979-1989	2 boxes
Topol’s files as Co-Chair of a conference on competitiveness held by the Carter Center in 1988. The series includes planning materials, correspondence, conference papers and publications, and related materials. Participants included Roy Ash, Aden Bement Jr., Derek Bok, Richard E. Cavanaugh, Michael Dertouzos, Joseph Duffey, William Farley, Robert W. Galvin, C. Jackson Grayson Jr., George N. Hatsopoulos, Matina S. Horner, Mel Levine, Alan Magazine, Albert Shanker, Lawrence Summers, Brian Turner, Laura D’Andrea Tyson, Paul Volcker, An Wang, and Murray Weidenbaum.

Series 8. Audiovisual materials	1944-1992	2 boxes
In addition to photographs of Topol taken for publicity purposes, the series includes two albums of photographs documenting important Raytheon products developed by Topol: the PTRL, the first ENG Mode, System Testing (1951-1953) and the KTR Microwave Relay System equipment (ca.1956). Other photographs from Topol’s time at Raytheon include some images from Selenia in Italy and Capdo, the Communications Division in Norwood, Mass. Among the photographs from Topol’s time at Scientific-Atlanta are ones that document a visit from Senator Sam Nunn and others, signing an order with William J. Bresnan of TelePrompTer (1977), a press conference held at Nieman Marcus when a Scientific-Atlanta earth station was the premier offering in the Christmas Catalogue (1979), trips to China (1980 and 1985), and White House briefing session meetings with President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George Bush. The series also includes videotapes of interviews with Topol, speeches and presentations, and awards events, several that relate to Scientific-Atlanta or the cable television industry, and an audiotape of panel discussion concerning HDTV and competitiveness.
