Henderson, Elizabeth, 1943-

A farmer, activist, and writer, Elizabeth Henderson has exerted an enormous influence on the movement for organic and sustainable agriculture since the 1970s. Although Henderson embarked on an academic career after completing a doctorate at Yale on the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky in 1974, by 1980, she abandoned academia for Unadilla Farm in Gill, Mass., where she learned organic techniques for raising vegetables. Relocating to Rose Valley Farm in Wayne County, NY, in 1989, she helped establish Genesee Valley Organic CSA (GVOCSA), one of the first in the country, and she continued the relationship with the CSA after founding Peacework Organic Farm in Newark, NY, in 1998. Deeply involved in the organic movement at all levels, Henderson was a founding member of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) in Massachusetts, has served on the Board of Directors for NOFA NY, the NOFA Interstate Council, SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) Northeast, and many other farming organizations at the state, regional, and national level, and she has been an important voice in national discussions on organic standards, fair trade, and agricultural justice. Among other publications, Henderson contributed to and edited The Real Dirt: Farmers Tell about Organic and Low-Input Practices in the Northeast and co-wrote Sharing the Harvest: A Citizen’s Guide to Community Supported Agriculture (1999, with Robyn Van En) and A Manual of Whole Farm Planning (2003, with Karl North).

Offering insight into the growth of the organic agriculture movement and the organizations that have sustained it, the Henderson Papers document Henderson’s involvement with NOFA, SARE, and the GVOCSA, along with her work to establish organic standards and promote organic practices. Henderson’s broad social and political commitments are represented by a rich set of letters from her work educating prisoners in the late 1970s, including correspondence with Tiyo Atallah Salah El and John Clinkscales, and with the American Independent Movement in New Haven during the early 1970s, including a nearly complete run of the AIM Bulletin and its successor Modern Times.

National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (U.S.)

Founded by attorney Keith Stroup in 1970, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) is the nation’s oldest and most prominent organization advocating for an end to cannabis prohibition. A nonprofit public-interest advocacy group based in Washington, DC, NORML has lobbied at the state and federal levels for the elimination of penalties for the cultivation, possession, and responsible use of cannabis, and it has met with success in state-level efforts at decriminalization. Over the years, NORML has led a wide variety of educational initiatives and coordinated its activities with other organizations working for cannabis reform. More recently, NORML has become a significant voice in the struggle to legalize the therapeutic use of marijuana.

The records of NORML offer a perspective on more than forty years of grassroots advocacy in cause of drug policy legislation. Highly varied in nature, the records include organizational records, research files on marijuana and marijuana use, promotional materials prepared by NORML, and letters from persons incarcerated for possession. The collection is currently being received by SCUA with new additions expected in the near term.

d’Errico, Peter

With a law degree from Yale in hand in 1968, Peter d’Errico began work as a staff attorney with Dinebeiina Nahiilna Be Agaditahe Navajo Legal Services in Shiprock, Arizona, representing American Indian interests in the US courts. Stemming from his frustrations with a stilted legal system, however, he evolved into an “anti-lawyer,” and in 1970 returned to academia. Joining the faculty at UMass, d’Errico focused his research and writing on the legal issues affecting indigenous peoples and he regularly taught courses on Indian law and the role of the law in imposing state systems on non-state societies. His impact was instrumental in establishing the Department of Legal Studies. Both before and after his retirment in 2002, d’Errico also remained active as a practitioner in Indian law.

The d’Errico collection contains a significant record of d’Errico’s high profile legal work in Indian law, including his work with Western Shoshone land rights and on the case Randall Trapp, et al. v. Commissioner DuBois, et al. In Trapp, a long-running, but ultimately successful First Amendement case, he and Robert Doyle represented prisoners in the Massachusetts Department of Corrections seeking to establish a sweat lodge.

Bey, Hanif Shabazz

Hanif Shabazz Bey is one of the “Virgin Island Five” accused and convicted of murdering eight tourists at a golf course in the U.S. Virgin Islands on September 6, 1972. The murders occurred during a turbulent period of rebellion on the Islands, a time when a movement to resist colonial rule was growing in the U.S. occupied Virgin Islands and elsewhere. The reaction to the crime, which was rapidly characterized as racially and politically motivated, from the authorities was both swift and revealing: over a hundred Black activists were picked up for interrogation and the island of St. Croix was put under martial law. Beaumont Gereau (Hanif Shabazz Bey) was one of five men apprehended and charged with the attack; each of the men accused was a known supporter of the Virgin Island independence movement. Detained and subjected to torture, the five men ultimately confessed to the crime and were tried for murder. Despite the many indications that the subsequent trial was profoundly flawed, the men were found guilty and sentenced to eight consecutive life terms.

“The Beginning of Hell” is a typed memoir by Hanif Shabazz Bey, a prisoner from the Virgin Islands held in the U.S. Written sometime after 1985, the memoir provides a personal account of Bey’s childhood in the Virgin Islands, his service in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, and the social and political conditions of the Islands during the early 1970s that led up to his arrest and conviction for the murder of eight tourists in 1972. Bey details the torture and other harsh interrogation tactics employed by prosecutors, the trial, and its aftermath, including his confinement to prisons first in Puerto Rico and then the U.S. In prison, Bey chronicles inhumane treatment and conditions, his conversion to Islam, and his efforts to seek assistance to reduce his sentence.

From 1987 through early 1988, Daniel and Joyce Stokes published Into the Night, “a newsletter for freedom for political prisoners held in the United States.” Based in Brooklyn, N.Y., this simply-produced publication offered updates and commentary on Americans imprisoned for politically-motivated acts. Reflecting both the legacy of 1960s radicalism and the resurgent activism associated with U.S. imperialism in Central America, Into the Night offered news on the Ohio 7 sedition trial, the MOVE organization, and the fate of Plowshares war resisters.

The Stokes collection contains correspondence from subscribers and supporters of Into the Night, fleshing out their political philosophy and the conditions of imprisonment. Drawn from groups including the MOVE organization, the United Freedom Front, Black Liberation Army, and Plowshares, the correspondents include Ramona Africa, Alberto Aranda, Philip Berrigan, Marilyn Buck, Carl Kabat, Ray Luc Levasseur, Ruchell Cinque Magee, and Carol Manning. The collection also includes copies of other radical publications and a complete run of Into the Night itself.

Historical Note

A poet and writer, Daniel M. J. Stokes was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 27, 1950, the son of Ervin William and Elizabeth (Ray) Stokes. A former editor of the East River Review, Stokes has contributed work to a number of magazines and published several books of poetry, beginning with Wired/LSD: Poems (New York: Culture Review Press, 1974) and including The World and Other Places (Cambridge, Mass: Chthon Press., 1975), Poems from Mexico (Mexico City: s.n., 1987), and Poems on the Run, 1984-1988 (Mexico City: In Exile Press, 1995).

From 1987 through early 1988, he and his wife, Joyce, published Into the Night, “a newsletter for freedom for political prisoners held in the United States.” Based in Brooklyn, N.Y., this simply-produced publication offered updates and commentary on Americans imprisoned for politically-motivated acts. Sent free of charge, the newsletter reached an audience of prisoners convicted of draft resistance, antinuclear protest, and anti-racist and anti-imperialist revolutionary activity, and it was read by others who had become radicalized during their imprisonment. From the outset, Into the Night generated significant resistance from prison authorities, and for unclear reasons, it appears to have ceased publication after its fifth number in March 1988.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Centered around the newsletter Into the Night, the Stokes Papers contains correspondence from a range of self-identified political prisoners, accompanied by an interesting, but ultimately miscellaneous suite of publications from the radical press. As small and tightly focused as it is, the collection provides a valuable window into the radical edge of the late 1980s political spectrum, and particularly the conjunction of antiracist and anti-imperialist groups within the prison system.

Although some of the correspondence is at best mundane — mostly requests for subscriptions — several prisoners provide compelling analyses of their political views and the conditions of imprisonment. Most correspondents are represented by only one or two letters, however the Ohio 7 “seditionists” (Ray Luc Levasseur and Carol Manning), the MOVE organization (Ramona Africa and William Phillips Africa), and members of the Black Liberation Army are somewhat better represented.

Among other noteworthy items in the collection are letters from Chicano revolutionaries Alberto Aranda and Alvaro Hernandez, including protests filed with the Texas Department of Corrections regarding the decision to deny Aranda access to Into the Night, and two lengthy letters from Aranda discussing political prisoners. Marilyn Buck’s letters provide a sharp analysis of the need for political ideology along with a copy of court proceedings filed by her and Mutulu Shakur (see also the folder relating to the Resistance Conspiracy Case). Several African American revolutionaries discuss their political motives and life in prison, including Ramona Africa (filed under MOVE), John Albury (Born Allah), Anthony Bottom (Jalil Muntaqim), Eric Clemmons-Bey, Kenneth Akbar Muhammad Jenkins, Ruchell Cinque Magee, and Richard Williams.

Finally, the collection includes a small number of radical antiwar and antinuclear resisters, most notably Philip Berrigan, Carl Kabat, George Ostensen, and Gillam Kerley.

While editing Into the Night, the Stokes kept copies of other radical publications, many intended for political prisoners or fellow revolutionaries, the more uncommon of which have been retained within the collection, which also includes an apparently complete run of Into the Night, including paste-ups of four of the five extant issues.

While serving a life sentence in a Pennsylvania prison, Tiyo Attallah Salah-El transformed himself into an activist, scholar, and advocate for the abolition of prisons. An accomplished jazz musician, Salah-El has distinguished himself for educational and scholarly work, his musical career, his close relationship with activists and educators, and for the non-profit organization he founded, The Coalition for the Abolition of Prisons (CAP).

The Papers of Tiyo Attallah Salah-El document his experience in the State Correctional Institution in Dallas, Pennsylvania from 1977 to the present, providing information on his education, teaching, and activism. The bulk of the collection consists of his extensive correspondence with educators, musicians, and activists. Other highlights include a manuscript copy of his autobiography and the founding documents of the The Coalition for the Abolition of Prisons.

American Friends Service Committee. Western Massachusetts

Established in 1968 in response to the war in Vietnam, the AFSC office in western Massachusetts did not limit its focus to draft and military counseling, instead the organization broadened its focus over time to include educational and outreach programs for a variety of peace and socal justice issues. Today the chapter focuses on economic justice, campaigns against U.S. military intervention, and actions to combat racism and classism. With an emphasis on serving the community of western Massachusetts, the program is equally committed to calling attention to issues of both national and local importance. Recent campaigns range from ending the war in Iraq and supporting peace in Columbia to preventing the construction of a new jail in Chicopee.

The collection consists chiefly of subject files that together provide a picture of the various issues in which the western Massachusetts AFSC was involved. Topics range from the organization’s earliest focus, the Vietnam War, to the first Gulf War, landlord/tenant relations, immigration, and landmines. The collection also includes materials relating to public figures, some of whom traveled to the region to speak.

Hampshire Community Action Commission

A private, non-profit corporation founded in 1965 in Northampton, Massachusetts to finance community action programs for eliminating poverty and assisting low income people. Programs included day care centers, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Summer Head Start, a drug addiction clinic at the jail, Legal Services, and the Foster Grandparent Program.

Records comprise bylaws and organizational charts, annual reports, board of directors minutes; administrative directors’ records, including correspondence with the federal agencies and state agencies granting funds, grant applications and awards, program plans, financial and legal documents, personnel records and staff training directives; the agency newsletter County Voice, Noticero Latina; and newsclippings about welfare programs.

Historical Note

Hampshire Community Action Commission, Inc. (HCAC), a private, non-profit corporation, was founded in 1965 in Northampton, Massachusetts, as a response to Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society aims and the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 which offered cities and towns grants to finance community action programs for eliminating poverty and assisting low income people. The 1964 Act stipulated that there be maximum participation by the low-income recipients in the program’s administration.

The 1964 Act established the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), a federal bureau which allocated monies and coordinated the programs with other governmental agencies. The OEO operated separate staffs for the Job Corps, VISTA, Head Start, and Community Action Programs. HCAC is a Community Action Program under this agency. In the 1970s the OEO ceased to exist, succeeded by the Communities Services Administration (CSA), which then became the federal bureau overseeing local Community Action Programs. Under federal auspices, there were also special programs, such as one for migrant workers. The federal agency also granted funds to existing agencies to administer programs funded by the 1964 Act. For example, work training programs were run by the Labor Department; rural antipoverty programs were under the Department of Agriculture.

The Hampshire Community Action Commission began in 1965-1966 with programs including day care centers, Neighborhood Youth Corps, Summer Head Start, and a drug addiction clinic at the jail. Soon they added a Legal Services program with neighborhood law offices primarily aimed at educating the poor in preventive law, and teaching them their legal rights and obligations. Another early program was the Foster Grandparent Program, which recruited low-income people over sixty to serve neglected and deprived children who had no close adult contacts.

With the 1970s and new presidential administrations, some funding sources were cut, while a few others appeared, causing the HCAC to drop some programs and to focus on new areas. Programs in after-school day care, family day care (where the child is taken care of in the home of the caregiver) and the energy/weatherization/fuel assistance programs are examples of newer HCAC programs.

A 1975 fact sheet stated the emphasis of HCAC: “To serve as an incubator for developing community-based and community supportive projects which will eventually stand on their own.” Measured effectiveness was said to be not just by the provided services, but by the changes the program achieved in the attitude of the community toward the poor, and the refocusing of public and private resources for anti-poverty purposes it effected.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The records comprise bylaws and organizational charts; annual reports (1974-1984); board of directors minutes (1969-1982); the Administrative Director’s records, including correspondence with the federal agencies and state agencies granting funds, grant applications and awards, program plans, financial and legal documents, personnel records and staff training directives; the agency newsletter County Voice, Noticero Latina; and newsclippings about welfare programs.

The records are inconsistently kept, depending on the staff, which had a rapid turnover rate. There are noticeable gaps; some programs are more represented than others. For example, the Hispanic Center is seen through a small lawsuit with the landlord of the center, and the Legal Services Program is only a list of lawyers. But, in the other series, such as the correspondence and the financial documents, the Hispanic Center and the Legal Services can be documented.

This collection, which could be updated periodically, should be a good source for historians interested in the 1960s and the promise of the Great Society legislation; for researchers in social service areas, such as early childhood education, programs for the elderly, preventive alcoholism programs; for researchers in Hispanic immigration; and for people studying the long range effects of federal programs on the poverty in Hampshire County.

Comprised of the various director’s planning reports to the federal agency, grant proposals and awards, other fundraising material of a more local nature, correspondence with the federal agency, Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and Office for Children material, job descriptions, employee union and health plan material, staff orientation and salary information, as well as program directors’ meeting minutes. There is also a section of legal documents related to the agency: legal correspondence, agreements, and lawsuits. Here (Box 11) are also some records of the Hampshire (County) Council of Social Agencies and HCAC’s part in that coordinating group, which evolved from a loose confederated to a more formal organization with a Hampshire County Coordinator of Human Services at the head.

Contains the agency newspaper, County Voice, Noticiero Latino, 1971-1980, as well as a set of mounted newspaper clippings from Massachusetts newspapers in 1968-1969. These clippings reflect the 1968-1969 public welfare program statewide including strikes by recipients for more aid, and letters to the editors criticizing public welfare programs.

Jeanine Maland’s papers represent a wide sampling of the activity and career of a lifelong activist, spanning the years 1965-2004. Although the collection contains limited personal information, these materials reflect Maland’s passion and commitment to social justice and social action. Her interests intersect with a number of the major social movements since the 1960s, ranging from the peace and antinuclear movements to critiques of the growing Prison Industrial Complex. While much of Maland’s activism took place on a local level, her efforts were often coordinated with national and international interests and movements.

Radical Student Union (RSU)

Founded by Charles Bagli in 1976, the Revolutionary Student Brigade at UMass Amherst (later the Radical Student Union) has been a focal point for organization by politically radical students. RSU members have responded to issues of social justice, addressing both local, regional, and national concerns ranging from militarism to the environment, racism and sexism to globalization.

The RSU records document the history of a particularly long-lived organization of left-leaning student activists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Beginning in the mid-1970s, as students were searching for ways to build upon the legacy of the previous decade, the RSU has been a constant presence on campus, weathering the Reagan years, tough budgetary times, and dramatic changes in the political culture at the national and state levels. The RSU reached its peak during the 1980s with protests against American involvement in Central America, CIA recruitment on campus, American support for the Apartheid regime in South Africa, and government-funded weapons research, but in later years, the organization has continued to adapt, organizing against globalization, sweatshops, the Iraq War, and a host of other issues.

Historical Note

The Radical Student Union (RSU) first appeared at UMass Amherst in 1976 as the Revolutionary Student Brigade (RSB). Founded by Charles Bagli, a Boston University graduate who had moved to Amherst to capitalize on the political momentum on campus, the RSB emerged out of a 1969 schism within the Students for a Democratic Society that produced The Revolutionary Youth Movement 1 (later to become the Weather Underground) and The Revolutionary Youth Movement 2. This latter organization, comprised of Communists and Socialists of various ideological persuasions, quickly divided and regrouped, leading to the creation of several groups including the Revolutionary Union in 1971, which set up a youth wing in 1972 called the Attica Brigade, which itself split off and formed its own organization in 1975, the Revolutionary Student Brigade.

The UMass Amherst Chapter of the RSB began slowly, with Bagli and other activists distributing material in the Campus Center during the 1975-76 school year. By the spring of 1976, the organization achieved official recognition as a student organization, with the mission of promoting the struggles and consciousness of students through the concrete application of Marxism-Leninism-Mao-Tsetung thought. Taking an office on the second floor of the Student Union building, they began to receive funding from the Student Government Association and a developed a core group of students.

The next thirty years of RSU history can be divided roughly into three phases: the founding and early development of the organization; the robust years of the mid- to late-1980s; and the slow waning of the organization since. Across this time, several principles of the group have remained constant. First, the RSU has always intended to be a multi-issue group whose focus is determined by its membership. Second, the RSU is committed to working with other groups on campus and in the community. Third, the RSU has consistently examined the actions of UMass in a global context, trying to ensure that the University acts in a socially responsible way. Fourth, no member has to subscribe to any particular ideology to be involved. These principles, however, have typically been coupled with other, seemingly contradictory factors. From the beginning, the RSU membership has been drawn primarily from white and middle to upper class students, while few of the people of color who have joined the group stayed active for long. The group has faced similar difficulties in developing women in leadership roles, even though the membership has been roughly balanced between men and women.

By 1980, the RSB had achieved a degree of stability on campus and a relatively high visibility. When the Revolutionary Student Brigade officially joined the Revolutionary Communist Party (changing its name to the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade), the UMass chapter was one of several that struck off on its own, adopting the name Radical Student Union. Despite this break with the national leadership, the RSU maintained some aspects of the earlier party-based organization, continuing to distribute revolutionary readings at meetings for future discussion, and having a secret collective into which only some members of the broader group were invited and which only a few even knew about. On its won, the RSU gradually evolved into a less doctrinaire organization, shedding the secret collective and affiliating with a variety of organizations. From 1981-1987, for example, the RSU joined the Progressive Student Network, a loosely linked coalition of campus-based student groups that sought to share resources and ideas and lend assistance when needed. They have subsequently worked with groups ranging from the American Friends Service Committee to the Students Coalition Against Nukes Nation Wide, United Students Against Sweatshops, Palestinian Action Coalition, the Five College Peace Network, and People for a Socially Responsible University.

On campus, the RSB and RSU worked on a long succession of issues. Among its mobilizations, the RSB organized protests around the 1978 death of Seta Rampersand, a black UMass student who was murdered in South Deerfield and whose death was never properly investigated. They were also active in protesting the decision at Kent State University to build a gymnasium on the site where four Kent State students were gunned down by National Guardsmen during an anti-war protest in 1970, organizing buses to take protestors to Kent State.

Among the most consistent threads in RSU activism has been a steadfast opposition to militarism and imperialism. Opposition to reinstatement of the military draft became a focus of concern after the return of Selective Service registration in the mid-1970s, and organizing around the issue of draft reinstatement has returned repeatedly, most recently in 2005, when a shortage of volunteers and wars on two fronts made it seem as if a new draft was imminent. Similarly, the RSU was deeply concerned with the realities of nuclear proliferation during the Reagan years. The Three Mile Island incident in 1979 highlighted the problems of nuclear power and the bellicosity of the Reagan administration led the RSB to join with national and local groups and organize around these issues through at least the early 1990s.

During the Reagan years, the RSU was active in opposition to American “imperial” expansion, and particularly to intervention in Central America, support for the Apartheid regime in South Africa, and the militarization of research on campus. In a series of demonstrations and marches, both locally and in Washington, D.C., RSU members protested the government’s funding and training of death squads in Central America, the efforts of the Central Intelligence Agency to recruit on campus, and the use of Department of Defense funds in weapons research on campus. These protests came to a head with two major waves of sit-ins. In 1987, a group of students and community members occupied Memorial Hall, leading to sixty arrests, including Abbie Hoffman and former president Carters daughter, Amy. All were eventually acquitted. Two years later, students sat in at some of the labs in the Graduate Research Center where Defense Department research was taking place, and then moved to Memorial Hall, the chancellors office, and back to the Graduate Research Center. Organizing against apartheid, the RSU lobbied for UMass to divest from corporations based in and operating in South Africa. The April 1st Coalition took over the office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for four days and three nights ending the sit-in only when the university agreed to form a commission to study divestment. Off campus, RSU members have periodically sought to form coalitions with organized labor. In their first labor solidarity campaign in 1980, the RSU joined in support of a strike by nursing home workers at the Amherst Nursing Home.

After the high level of activity in the 1980s, the RSU has experienced a considerable drop off. Members joined in demonstrations against the Persian Gulf War in August 1990, including the protests at Westover Air Force Base, and they worked in solidarity to help win University recognition of the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO), and to convince UMass in 2000 to sign onto the Workers Rights Consortium, opposing the sale of sweatshop-produced apparel in the University Store. Efforts in the early 2000s to revive the organization met with mixed success, with some sustained protests against state budget cuts to education (the Save UMass campaign), against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and on issues surrounding globalization. Members took part in protests against the Free Trade Area of the Americas in QuÃ©bec in 2001 and Miami 2003, the latter notorious for violence. Following a campaign against labor and environmental abuses by the Coca Cola Corporation, the RSU almost disappeared, but was kept alive by several students until the fall of 2006.

The Revolutionary Student Brigade/Radical Student Union has managed to do something that few left-wing groups have: it has survived in more or less the same form it started with the same key principles and in the same physical space. Campus-based groups face difficulty in maintaining continuity as they lose members to graduation or the press of other concerns. The Radical Student Union remained active as of the 2006-2007 academic year, organizing several Critical Mass bike rides, protesting the honorary degree presented to Andrew Card, a senior official in the Bush White House, and attending the protests at the Bio International Convention.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The records of the Radical Student Union and its predecessor, The Radical Student Brigade, document the history of a particularly long-lived organization of left-leaning student activists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Series 1 contains two sub-series. First, the administrative sub-series contains internal records kept by the RSU to document its activities, including leaflets advertising RSU meetings from 1980 through 2001, a student booklet created in 2004 entitled “A History analysis and How To,” documents pertaining to the status of the RSU within the University, contact sheets and directories for members and the press, meeting notes and agendas, and documents relating to procedures and lists of office duties. The sub-series also contains a few newspaper clippings about the RSU, articles written by members for publication, catalogues for materials and speakers, song sheets, stationary prototypes, and folders used in the original filing process that are of interest. The RSU’s financial records consist primarily of reports submitted to the Student Government Association to account for expenditures, and materials used in grant writing. Both sub-series are filed alphabetically for folder title.
Series 2: Subject Files	1966-2005	5.5 linear feet
The members of the RSU maintained an extensive topical file in their office in the Campus Center. These files were used in several ways by members: as resources for teaching and learning about specific issues (e.g., South Africa), for designing flyers, or for developing learning skills; as documentation of events planned by the RSU or in which they took part; and as information about organizations with whom the RSU coordinated efforts (e.g., American Friends Service Committee). Occasionally, the RSU brought together materials from disparate sources relating to topics of particular interest. Under Womens Issues, for example, they filed materials on Abortion, Leadership, Pornography, and Violence against Women. In most cases, however, the topics are less systematically treated, and it may be necessary to delve deeply to locate all relevant information. A few items dating from prior to the founding of the RSB probably came either from Charles Bagli, the founder of RSU, from other early members, or were inherited from earlier groups on campus. Some materials appear to have come from the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade and the Communist Youth Brigade, both of which were active on campus at the same time. The series includes newspaper clippings, flyers, published materials, song sheets, correspondence, and notes. Photographs have been removed to the Audio Visual Series and banners have been removed to the Textiles Series.
Series 3: Radical Student Union Publications	1981-2000	0.5 linear feet
This small series contains materials published by the RSU or its members on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. The five publications are essentially irregularly-issued periodicals (some with missing issues), with the longest running publication, Critical Times, housed separately. All of these publications focus on social justice issues.
Series 4: Revolutionary Student Brigade (RSB) Term Paper Library	1971-1985	0.5 linear feet
The Revolutionary Student Brigade/Radical Student Union kept a term paper library for use by its members in preparing for work in school and in their activism. The papers, some of which pre-date the founding of RSB, are organized by general subject area.
Series 5: Printed materials	1905-1982	1.5 linear feet
The Printed Materials series contains 156 booklets, books, and single printed sheets covering a wide range of topics, particularly Communism, the Middle East conflict, and Labor. Of particular interest are the materials regarding the protests against the busing of school children in Boston, and a booklet from 1978 about the 1974 death of Karen Silkwood. A few additional monographs are included in Series 2: Subject Files.
Series 6: Textiles	1985-2006	4.5 linear feet
The Textiles consist of sixteen banners and armbands displayed by the RSU during their actions relating to apartheid, labor issues, globalization, and opposition to war and imperialism. The majority of the banners are not dated, and three have yet to be identified as to subject. Almost all are made out of cotton with paint or marker used to create an image, and they vary in size from the size of an armband to approximately ten feet square.
