Yankee Publishing was founded in 1935 by Robb Sagendorph, who saw an opportunity for a magazine devoted to depicting New England life and culture. With an initial subscription of 614, Yankee Magazine was launched in September of that year and despite the hardships of Depression and war, it has thrived, becoming a beloved institution. In 1939, Sagendorph purchased publishing rights for the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which had been published continuously since 1792, and quickly restored it to profitability. Still based in Dublin, N.H., Yankee remains an independent, family-owned enterprise, with responsibilities passing to his nephew Judson Hale, son-in-law Rob Trowbridge, and grandson Jamie Trowbridge. Although the company has made forays into other areas of publishing, Yankee Magazine and Old Farmer’s Almanac remain its core business.

The records of Yankee Publishing offer insight into the early years and growth of the corporation and its remarkable survival in age of media conglomeration. The collection includes two boxes of materials relating to the founder, Robb Sagendorph, and extensive correspondence, reports, memos, and other materials relating to Yankee Magazine and Old Farmer’s Almanac through 1999. In addition to nearly complete runs of both of the mainstay periodicals, the collection also includes a variety of materials accumulated by Yankee’s owners over the years, including several hundred glass plate negatives depicting New England and its characters.

Bowman, Mitzi

For years, Mitzi Bowman and her husband Pete were stalwarts of the progressive community in Connecticut, and tireless activists in the movements for social justice, peace, and the environment. Shortly after their marriage in 1966, the Bowman’s settled in Milford, Conn., where Pete worked as an engineer. In close collaboration, the couple became ardent opponents of the war in Vietnam as well as opponents of nuclear weaponry. The focus of their activism took a new direction in 1976, when they learned of plans to ship spent nuclear fuel rods near their home. Founding their first antinuclear organization, STOP (Stop the Transport of Pollution), they forced the shipments to be rerouted, and they soon devoted themselves to shutting down nuclear power in Connecticut completely, including the Millstone and Connecticut Yankee facilities, the latter of which was decommissioned in 1996. The Bowmans were active in a wide array of other groups, including the New Haven Green Party, the Connecticut Coalition Against Millstone, the People’s Action for Clean Energy (PACE), and they were founding members of Fight the (Utility Rate) Hike, the Progressive Action Roundtable, and Don’t Waste Connecticut. Two years after Pete died on Feb. 14, 2006 at the age of 78, Mitzi relocated to Vermont, carrying on her activism.

The Bowman Papers center on Mitzi and Pete Bowman’s antinuclear activism, dating from their first forays with STOP in the mid-1970s through the growth of opposition to Vermont Yankee in the approach to 2010. The collection offers a valuable glimpse into the early history of grassroots opposition to nuclear energy and the Bowmans’ approach to organizing and their connections with other antinuclear activists and to the peace and environmental movements are reflected in an extensive series of notes, press releases, newsclippings, talks, ephemera, and correspondence. The collections also includes extensive subject files on radiation, nuclear energy, peace, and related topics.

Assembled by Lynnette E. Foucher, this collection consists chiefly of cookbooks produced by food companies between the 1920s-1970s. These cookbooks reflect the changing role of women in the home as well as new food trends and innovative technology. Taken together, the collection offers a glimpse into the way meal preparation changed in the U.S. during the second half of the twentieth century and how this change transformed the way we eat today.

Contents of Collection

Collector Lynnette E. Foucher assembled this cookbook collection and organized it into twenty-two distinct groups based on ingredient (exs. chocolate, yeast), company (ex. Pillsbury), and region (exs. local, international). While the bulk of the collection represents the period of the 1920s-1970s, it contains items from as early as 1902 and as late as 2000. Its strength lies in its documentation of corporations marketing their products to consumers, in particular to the American housewife.

From Lever Brothers Company’s 10 Cakes Husbands Like Best (1952) to General Electric’s Meals Go Modern Electrically (1940) cookbooks offered companies a unique opportunity to enter a woman’s home where they continued to influence what she prepared and how she prepared it long after she left the market. These corporate cookbooks often promised women something greater than a delicious cake; they promised to provide them more free time to spend with their families, ways to economize, and a more glamorus lifestyle. As a result this collection is a rich source for the study of modern household technology, cooking and food trends, women’s history, and consumerism during the 20th century

The editor, writer, and photographer Gray Williams was born in New York City in 1932, and spent most of his life in Chappaqua (Westchester County), N.Y. A 1954 graduate of Yale, Williams worked in the publishing industry for many years, including for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, and since 1988, he has been a freelance writer, editor, and photographer. Long dedicated to history and historical preservation, he has served as New Castle Town Historian, chair of the New Castle Landmarks Advisory Committee, trustee of the Westchester County Historical Society, and as a member of the Property Council at the National Trust property Lyndhurst. He is the author of Picturing Our Past: National Register Sites in Westchester County (Westchester County Historical Society, 2003). A specialist in the early stone carvers of New York and Connecticut, as well as the use of grave monuments to illuminate and enrich the study of American history, art, and culture, Williams is a former trustee of the Association for Gravestone Studies and has contributed articles to its annual journal, Markers, and its Quarterly. In 2007, he was awarded the Association’s Harriette Merrifield Forbes Award for contributions to scholarship and preservation in the field.

The photographs and research materials he has contributed to the Association for Gravestone Studies are largely devoted to the subjects of three articles in the AAGS journal, Markers: “‘Md. by Thomas Gold’: The Gravestones of a New Haven Carver,” in collaboration with Meredith M. Williams, Markers V (1988); “Solomon Brewer: A Connecticut Valley Yankee in Westchester County,” Markers XI (1994); “By Their Characters You Shall Know Them: Using Styles of Lettering to Identify Gravestone Carvers,” Markers XVII (2000). The collection also includes photographs taken during AGS conferences, principally in New England, as well as a small group taken in Natchez Cemetery in Mississippi.

Alternative Energy Coalition

A product of the vibrant and progressive political culture of western Massachusetts during the early 1970s, the Alternative Energy Coalition played a key role in the growth of antinuclear activism. In 1974, the AEC helped mobilize support for Sam Lovejoy after he sabotaged a weather tower erected by Northeast Utilities in Montague, Mass., in preparation for a proposed nuclear power plant, and they helped organize the drive for a referendum opposing not only the proposed plant in Montague, but existing plants in Rowe, Mass., and Vernon, Vt. Forming extensive connections with other antinuclear organizations, the AEC also became one of the organizations that united in 1976 to form the Clamshell Alliance, which made an art of mass civil disobedience.

The AEC Records provide insight into grassroots activism of the 1970s and 1980s, galvanized by the seemingly unrestrained growth of the nuclear power industry. The records, emanating from the Hampshire County branch, contain both research materials used by the AEC and organizational and promotional materials produced by them, including publications, minutes of meetings, correspondence, and materials used during protests. Of particular interest are a thick suite of organizational and other information pertaining to the occupation of the Seabrook (N.H.) nuclear power plant in 1979 and minutes, notes, and other materials relating to the founding and early days of the Clamshell Alliance. The collection is closely related to the Antinuclear Collection (MS 547).

Background on Alternative Energy Coalition

On Washington’s Birthday in 1974, a local organic farmer and member of the Montague Farm commune, Sam Lovejoy, committed an act of civil disobedience. In the early morning hours he used hand tools to fell a weather-monitoring tower erected by Northeast Utilities, the corporation that was planning to build a massive nuclear power plant in town. Leaving the wreckage behind, Lovejoy flagged down a passing patrol car and turned himself in to face the consequences, hoping to spur a public debate about the use of nuclear energy. In that he succeeded. During the weeks that followed, Lovejoy’s trial garnered national attention and catalyzed the formation of antinuclear organizations such as the Alternative Energy Coalition (AEC).

Founded in Montague, the AEC offered support for Lovejoy during the trial as well as for the larger aim of building broad-based opposition to nuclear power in the wake of Richard Nixon’s “Project Independence,” which included a plan to build 1,000 nuclear power plants by the year 2000. From the outset, the AEC used a range of tactics to achieve their goals, from political engagement, to petitions, public awareness campaigns, and direct action. The activist Harvey Wasserman, a co-organizer of the AEC, and several of his associates created a political party to influence local elections, supporting Lovejoy as he ran for representative to town meeting, and Anna Gyorgy (another AEC founder), Marc Sills, Nina Simon, and Janice Frey for other spots under the antinuclear “No Party” ticket.

By the early spring, the AEC began collecting signatures to place a dual referendum on the ballot for the state senatorial district, the first instructing the senator to oppose the proposed plant at Montague, the second instructing him or her to “sponsor and support a resolution aimed at closing and dismantling” the region’s two active nuclear power plants at Rowe, Massachusetts, and Vernon, Vermont. They were successful, gathering over 3,800 supporters.

In 1976, the AEC chose to affiliate with several antinuclear organizations to form the Clamshell Alliance, a New England-based coalition of antinuclear activists. Through acts of non-violent civil disobedience, most notably the 1976 and 1977 occupations of the Seabrook Nuclear Power plant in New Hampshire, the Clamshell galvanized the antinuclear movement and became one of the major factors in radically slowing the growth of the nuclear industry in the United States. The AEC continued as a separate organization with chapters in both Hampshire and Franklin Counties, until disbanding in about 1981. By that time, dozens of other groups were active in opposition to nuclear power, aligned with the AEC’s principles of non-violent direct action.

Contents of Collection

The Alternative Energy Coalition Records document the organizational life of the Massachusetts-based antinuclear activist group from approximately 1974 to 1981, centered on the Hampshire County Branch. Reflecting the AEC’s dual commitment to promoting the use of renewable energy resources and opposing nuclear power, the records provide an indication both of the high degree of decentralization characteristic of the early antinuclear movement and the impressive coordination maintained between like-minded organizations.

In addition to administrative records of the Hampshire County chapter of the AEC, the collection contains fliers, newsletters, leaflets, and other promotional materials, information on alternative energy, correspondence with allied organizations, and some realia used in protesting nuclear power. Of particular interest is a thick sheaf of notes, memoranda, and minutes of meetings from the organization and early years of the Clamshell Alliance, including minutes of the Coordinating Committee and a variety of materials relating to the occupations at the Seabrook (N.H.) Nuclear Power Plant between 1977 and 1979.

Series 1 contains documents produced by the AEC for its own use and day-to-day operations, including flyers, meeting announcements, project proposals, handbooks, training session materials, meeting minutes, and member contact information. The organization also created extensive planning materials, including reconnaissance maps of New England nuclear sites for non-violent protest actions and outgoing petitions to the President against nuclear power. This series contains some artifacts, including black armbands worn by AEC members during site occupations as well as handmade hitch-hiking placards. Of special note in this series are three office logbooks that AEC members annotated and used to communicate with one another during direct action engagements, and a pad of paper used by AEC and affiliated members to document–in real time–the actions of the October 6, 1979 Seabrook occupation. (This pad is in the folder entitled, “Clamshell – Seabrook Occupation, October 6th, 1979.”)
Series 2. Research	1960-1980	132 folders (7.5 linear feet)
Series 2 contains materials collected by the AEC on a wide range of alternative energy sources. Enclosed are magazine articles, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets elaborating on nuclear issues, including nuclear weapons use and the environmental impacts of nuclear energy. The AEC was committed to gathering information about non-nuclear energy sources like solar, wind, electric power, and fossil fuels. In addition, the AEC maintained a small library of books, brochures, fact sheets, catalogues, and product listings exploring practical energy conservation methods, this last intended for use of private citizens. Brochures in this series investigate topics ranging from improved house construction to composting toilets, from hot water heaters to energy-efficient fireplaces. The AEC also received weekly reports from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (from 1976-1979) and the Department of Energy (from 1978-1979). A few representative reports are preserved in this series. The AEC also collected legislative materials denoting Massachusetts alternative energy policies.
Series 3. Affiliated Groups	1977-1980	109 folders (3 linear feet)
Series 3 contains material relating to the AEC’s extensive connections to other environmental and antinuclear activist groups, both local and national. The AEC collected newsletters, news articles, and correspondence from groups with similar objectives. The AEC’s strongest link was to the Clamshell Alliance; this organization’s mission, membership, planning, and operations overlapped with those of the AEC after Clamshell’s founding in 1976. As such, most material in this series is devoted to the Clamshell Alliance. Other selected affiliated organizations include the Abalone Alliance (California), Crabshell Alliance, Palmetto Alliance, Potomac Alliance, Tennessee Valley Energy Alliance, Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance, and the Rocky Flats Truth Force. The AEC also kept documents relating to other ideologically aligned social issues, such as the Red Power, Women’s Rights, Mohawk Sovereignty, and Peace Movements.

A life-long resident of Lake Pleasant, Massachusetts, and a third-generation Spiritualist, Louise Shattuck was an artist, teacher, and noted breeder of English cocker spaniels.

Shattuck’s work as a teacher, writer, artist, and dog breeder are documented in this collection through decades of correspondence and diaries, artwork, publications, and newspaper clippings. Of particular note are the materials associated with the Spiritualist history of Lake Pleasant, including three turn of the century spirit slates, samples of Louise’s automatic writing, a ouija board and dowsing rods, and an excellent photograph album with associated realia for the Independent Order of Scalpers, a Lake Pleasant.

Historical Note

Louise Shattuck, ca.1945

In her long life, Louise Shattuck wore many hats — artist, teacher, dog-breeder, writer, and Spiritualist — but to her, she only wore one: that of an art-making, skill-teaching, dog-breeding, writing, and spirit-talking resident of Lake Pleasant, Mass. Somehow, Shattuck managed the difficult feat of knitting these disparate strands into a single, seamless life, her professional and personal interests weaving together in a uniquely creative way.

Geographically, intellectually, and spiritually, the center of Shattuck’s life was the village of Lake Pleasant, Mass. One of five villages in the town of Montague, Lake Pleasant was established in 1870 when George Potter, a real estate agent from neighboring Greenfield, sensed a business opportunity. Acquiring the land around the southern tip of the lake, Potter set up picnic tables and invited local residents to use the area as a park. It was an instant success, so much so Potter rapidly decided to cash out, selling the property to the Boston and Maine Railroad Company in 1872 so that it could be expanded into a regional destination for summer tourism. Taking advantage of the scenic lake front and deep woods, the Railroad erected a railroad stop, a pavilion and bandstand, hotel, and other amenities. Waging an aggressive marketing campaign, they lured dozens, and eventually thousands of tourists per year. From the outset, some of these visitors came in groups: Odd Fellows, Freemasons, Congregationalists, Unitarians, and Spiritualists among them.

It was Spiritualists, more than any other group, who exerted the greatest influence on the development of Lake Pleasant, and particularly those associated with the New England Spiritualist Camp-meeting Association (NESCA). Formed in 1874 and incorporated in 1879, NESCA was part of the first wave of truly successful regional- and national-level Spiritualist organizations, built upon the evangelical model of holding seasonal (and later permanent) camp meetings. From the beginning, NESCA found a home in Lake Pleasant, paralleling other Spiritualist groups that attached themselves to camps in Etna, Maine, Lilydale, N.Y., Chesterfield, Ind., and Cassadaga, Fla. Spiritualism soon transformed the look and feel of the community in the pine woods. “There never was a summer night when one did not have a choice of attending any number of [Spiritualist] ‘circles’,” Shattuck wrote in Yankee Magazine in 1968 (p.141). In 1913, a number of Lake Pleasant Spiritualists affiliated with NESCA split with their peers over some philosophical differences (reincarnation among them) to form the National Spiritual Alliance (TNSA). For over sixty years, the village hosted two Spiritualist temples, one for each faction.

When Louise was born on December 24, 1919, the only child of a railway electrician Frank Shattuck and his wife Sarah (Bickford), Lake Pleasant was in its heyday. Like their adopted village, the Shattucks were committed Spiritualists: Louise’s maternal grandmother, Anna (Dyer) Bickford, was one of the early mediums at the resort, and Sarah Shattuck (also called Sara or Sadie) followed suit, delivering spirit messages and inspiration from spirit sources up until the time of Louise’s birth. Louise inherited mediumistic tendencies from her women forebears, and although she never acted as a professional medium, throughout her life she engaged in automatic writing and in use of the planchette and Ouija board to contact spirit beings.

In the years following the First World War, Lake Pleasant experienced a slow decline, driven in part by the decrease of summering as a middle class activity and of Spiritualism as a religion. Although the rise of the automobile and decay of the American rail system hurt many summer resorts, Lake Pleasant was hit particularly hard after access to the lake was curtailed, then shut off, when its waters became a reservoir for the town of Montague. The Shattucks, however, remained loyal. Although Louise was born and raised in Medford, Mass., she and her family continued to summer in the cottage that Frank had built barely twenty yards from the TNSA temple, and following Frank’s death in 1948, Sarah became a full time resident.

Louise emulated her mother in more than just mediumistic talent: the two shared a passion for animals, particularly dogs, for art and teaching. By her senior year at Medford High School, was already set on her future life course, entering Massachusetts College of Art (class of 1941) intent on making a career in the graphic arts. Although she taught art off and on for many years, beginning with a stint teaching ceramics at Garland Junior College in Boston (later absorbed into Simmons College), she began as early as 1943 to produce ceramic, clay, and bronze figurines for commercial distribution. Striking her first contracts with the Boston firm Contemporary Arts, and taking her grandmother’s maiden name (Ann Dyer) as a pseudonym, she began to distribute work through Hudson Pewter, Lance Corporation, and the American Pewter Company.

Thematically and stylistically, Louise’s early work was quite diverse, ranging from a figurine of a ballet dancer to a small sculpture of an Arab rider on horseback (one of her favorite pieces) that was sculpted under the influence of a spirit named Charles Memling. By the mid-1940s, however, her work acquired a real focus when she settled into a niche as an animal artist, dogs being her distinct favorite subject. An early member of the Society of Animal Arts), she also did a great deal of graphic work for magazines, particularly those associated with dog breeding, producing pen and ink drawings and cartoons, as well as pastels and paintings, both for private commission and retail distribution. Her love of dogs extended well beyond her artwork, and dogs assumed a greater prominence in her life as she grew older. As proprietor of Carry On Kennels, she became well known as a breeder of English Cocker Spaniels and stalwart in the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America.

Louise also became an author. In addition to two humorous works on her experiences with dogs, From Riches to Bitches (1979) and In Stitches Over Bitches (1983), Louise wrote and illustrated a children’s book, The Donkey and the Tree (1999). Her last book, co-written with her friend David James, was “portrait of the body, mind, and soul” of her beloved Lake Pleasant, Spirit and Spa (2003).

Never married, Louise joined her mother in Lake Pleasant in 1967 as Sarah’s health began to fail. Louise remained active as a sculptor and illustrator well into her 80s, remaining in her family cottage until her death in October 2005.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Shattuck Papers offer a window onto the eclectic life of artist, dog breeder, and Spiritualist Louise Shattuck and onto the equally eclectic Spiritualist community of Lake Pleasant, Mass. Organized into five series, the collection documents Louise’s life from her childhood until her death, with an emphasis upon her connections to her community. Her diverse interests interweave throughout the collection, appearing in correspondence and writings, newspaper clippings and photographs, and in her voluminous diaries, kept sporadically between 1928 and the mid-1970s and regularly from then until 2005.

Of particular note in the collection are a small, but rich assortment of materials relating to Spiritualism. Among the photographs, pamphlets, and realia are items reflecting both Louise’s Spiritualist practices and her interest in the history of Spiritualism and the Lake Pleasant community. A Lake Pleasant photograph album, along with a few publications and objects provide sketchy, but intriguing documentation of the Independent Order of Scalpers, a fraternal club in the village, but the collection also includes extensive samples of Louise’s automatic writing, transcripts of Ouija board sessions, and four excellent examples of spirit slates with chalk inscriptions, dating from the time of Louise’s grandmother (ca.1900-1910). Also included in a small assortment of Spiritualist pamphlets published by the Star Publishing Co. of Springfield, Mass., is H. A. Budington’s History of the New England Campmeeting Association at Lake Pleasant.

Series 1: Personal and Business	1902-2006	5.5 boxes (3.75 linear feet)
Shattuck’s private and professional lives were intricately interwoven, and as such, the contents of this series pertain both to Louise’s personal affairs and business ventures. With a few exceptions, the correspondence dates from Louise’s childhood in the 1920s forward, with somewhat uneven survival through the years. Among the relatively few letters of Sarah Shattuck are some fascinating glimpses into her mediumistic activities, including a “Translation of a Persian message to the world given through the mediumship of Sara Bickford” (undated), written on the letterhead of the Spiritualist historian of Lake Pleasant, H.A. Budington, and a letter from John E. Coover of Stanford University (1915) discussing his views of automatic writing. Series 1 also includes a large number of pen sketches and cartoons, largely depicting dogs, and numerous contracts for figurines Shattuck created for Contemporary Arts (mostly under the pseudonym Anna Dyer), the American Pewter Company, Hudson Pewter, and the Lance Corporation. Together, these provide a sense of the range of Shattuck’s commercial work and how her interests evolved through the course of her career. Other miscellaneous items include newspaper clippings and a variety of legal documents, including birth certificates for Louise and other members of her family.

Series 2: Diaries	1919-2004	10.5 boxes (5.25 linear feet)
Shattuck kept a diary regularly from 1928 to 2005. At the end of almost each day, she wrote at least one full page discussing the day’s work and events, often commenting that she was not getting enough done, and occasionally referring to money issues or personal conflicts. Two diaries in the series (1916, 1952)belonged to Louise’s mother, Sarah Bickford Shattuck.

Series 3: Lake Pleasant and Spiritualism	1881-2004	1 box (0.5 linear feet)
While not born in Lake Pleasant, Louise was in a sense born to Lake Pleasant. From her mother and mother’s mother, she inherited mediumistic abilities. Series 3 contains abundant evidence of Louise’s efforts at spirit communication, including extensive sheafs of automatic writing, spirit writing, and transcripts of Ouija board sessions, along with a small number of relatively scarce Spiritualist pamphlets published by the Star Publishing Company of Springfield, Mass. While Lake Pleasant portcards have been included in this series, photographs and other audio/visual materials pertaining to Lake Pleasant and Spiritualism are to be found in Series 4: Audio/Visual.

Series 4: Audiovisual	1895-2004
This series contains primarily photographs, dating from the late 1800s to 2005. Several photograph albums are dedicated to documenting Louise’s English cocker spaniels as they progressed in their training, while others pertain primarily to recording her artwork, especially sculpture. Of note are a number of photographs of Louise herself, from when she was less than a year old to very near the end of her life. Also included are slides and negatives as well as CD-ROM slide shows and a single video cassette. All audio or visual materials relating to Spiritualism and Lake Pleasant are to be found in this series.

Series 5: Realia	1907-circa 1970
Among the realia in the Shattuck Papers are several examples of Shattuck’s artwork, most notably her statue of an Arab rider on horseback, created under the influence of the spirit, Charles Memling. Also included are Spiritualist artifacts such as a feathered headdress (from Lake Pleasant’s Independent Order of Scalpers), a set of divining rods, and a Ouija board, and less directly three unidentified locks of human hair, and Shattuck’s cremated remains, housed in a sealed vessel in the shape of a dog’s head. Finally, the series includes a framed self-portrait by Sarah Bickford Shattuck, ca.1920?, dressed in a white gown worn during a Spiritualist play.

Two years after graduating from Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1875, William Penn Brooks accepted an invitation from the Japanese government — and his mentor, William Smith Clark — to help establish the Sapporo Agricultural School. Spending over a decade in Hokkaido, Brooks helped to introduce western scientific agricultural practices and the outlines of a program in agricultural education, and he built a solid foundation for the School. After his return to the states in 1888, he earned a doctorate at the University of Halle, Germany, and then accepted a position at his alma mater, becoming a leading figure at the Massachusetts Experiment Station until his retirement in 1921.

Brooks’ papers consist of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, an account book, and translations which provide rich detail on Brooks’ life in Japan, the development of Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University), and practical agricultural education in the post-Civil War years.

Biographical Note

William Penn Brooks was born in South Scituate, Massachusetts in November of 1851. He entered the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1871 and graduated with high honors in 1875. During his undergraduate years he participated in Dr. William Smith Clark’s famous experiments on plant physiology. Brooks remained at Massachusetts Agricultural College as a graduate student in chemistry and botany. During this time, Brooks accepted an invitation from the Japanese government to go to Sapporo to teach. Brooks arrived in Japan in January 1877 to continue the work begun by Clark to establish the Sapporo Agricultural School. Immediately after his arrival he began to deliver lectures on agricultural science and took charge of the directorship of the experimental fields. Brooks worked at the Sapporo Agricultural School for twelve years, four of which he served as the college president. Along with his teaching, Brooks made a great number of contributions as an agricultural advisor for the Sapporo provincial government. He introduced onions, corn, beans, forage and other plants to Japan.

In 1882, Brooks returned to America and married Miss Eva Bancroft Hall. They lived in Sapporo for seven years during which time they had two children. Their daughter, Rachel Bancroft Brooks, married Mr. George Drew in 1907. Their son, Sumner Cushing Brooks, married Matilda Moldenhauer while they were both students at Harvard.

Brooks returned to America with his family in October 1888. On leaving Japan, the government bestowed on him the Fourth Order of Merit and the Cordon of the Rising Sun. In 1920, the Minister of Education in Japan conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Agriculture.

In 1889, Brooks was appointed professor of agriculture at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, at the same time he began to serve as an engineer at the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station. During this time he introduced soybeans to the United States. In August 1896, Brooks went to Germany with his family and studied at Halle for one year where he received his doctorate. After his return from Germany, Brooks became interested mainly in experimental enterprises. In 1906 he became director of the Station and he remained connected with the college soley as a lecturer. Brooks was an advisor to the Station until 1921. His contributions to agriculture have been mainly published as reports of the schools, the Experiment Station, the state agricultural department, and the societies to which he was connected. Brooks also authored a textbook in three volumes entitled Agriculture and a collection of his lectures were published under the title Science as Applied to Agriculture. In 1932, Massachusetts Agricultural College granted Brooks an honorary degree of Doctor of Agriculture.

In 1924 Brooks’s wife died; three years later he married Mrs. Grace Holden. Brooks cultivated his own garden in Amherst where he lived until his death on March 8, 1938 at the age of eighty-seven. In a letter written to one of his students Kingo Miyabe he wrote: “I was born in November, 1851, and to my pleasure I am still living in good health. I can still drive the automobile myself and do all the work in my garden. Nothing gives me more pleasure than cultivating vegetables, fruit-trees, and flowering plants and it is this work that is keeping me in such sound health. Now I have twenty odd kinds of hybrid tea roses and they have been in blossom since the middle of June.”

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The William Penn Brooks Papers consists of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, an account book, and translations. The collection is arranged in three series: Correspondence, Biographical and Historical, and Photographs. The majority of letters are from William Brooks to his sister Rebecca Brooks during the period of time when he was teaching in Sapporo, Japan. The time span of the letters range from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and describe in rich detail life in Japan from the perspective of an American teacher trained in agriculture.

This collection is organized into three series:

Series Descriptions

Series 1. Correspondence	1868-1938
Brooks’s reflections on botany in Sapporo and on his teaching tenure at Sapporo Agricultural School can be found in his letters to his sister Rebecca. These letters frequently refer to Rebecca’s failing health and in them William Brooks offers advice to his sister regarding her well-being. It remains unclear what was the cause of Rebecca’s poor health, but there are mentions of digestive problems and the need for good nourishment and fresh air. Another topic documented in these letters is the description of life in Japan, including such details as the noise made by frogs, which were numerous in Sapporo, the construction of houses, and the organization of Japanese households. According to Brooks, the Japanese took down the walls of their houses during the day so that the inner arrangement of their houses was displayed. One letter refers to kite flying as a national past time and another letter describes Japanese theater as always based on an historical narrative. Brooks is attentive to plant life and the different kinds of food which are available in Sapporo. In the letters of Eva Brooks to William’s sisters Rebecca and Martha, she writes of her domestic duties such as milking the cow, making butter, and a taking trip to various cities of Japan with her daughter Rachel. She itemizes the objects that she bought on this trip in order to bring them back to Massachusetts upon the completion of William’s tenure at Sapporo Agricultural School.

Series 2. Biographical and Historical	1878-1939
Contains an account book, probably kept by Eva Brooks, dated 1896 to 1923, with pages 16-25 and 46-49 removed. Other materials in this series are newspaper clippings, translations, the biographical sketches of Brooks and the Baron Shosuke Sato, a map of Hokkaido University, a Japanese poem translated into English by Brooks’s students, and a salary receipt for Brooks’s work at the Experiment Station.

The photographs consist of portraits of staff and graduating students from three classes at Sapporo Agricultural College as well as scenes of Japan and Massachusetts.

Citizens Awareness Network

In 1992 after lightening struck the Yankee Rowe reactor in western Massachusetts, concerned citizens organized with the goal of educating themselves and their communities about the potential dangers of nuclear energy. Citizens Awareness Network (CAN) worked to reveal the hidden costs of nuclear power on the health and safety of communites surrounding a reactor, and as a result of their efforts Yankee Rowe was pressured into closing down in 1993. When CAN learned that much of the nuclear waste removed from the site was shipped to a town in South Carolina, the group was outraged that the waste which hurt their community would now be imposed on another community. Once again they were moved into action, this time transforming from a small local group into a regional group with multiple chapters. Today, with seven chapters in five states, CAN continues to uncover the hazards of nuclear energy, proposing instead the use of clean energy produced locally.

This large collection documents every facet of the group, and includes publications, financial records, research files, correspondence, and realia such as t-shirts, bumper stickers and buttons.

Clark, William Smith, 1826-1886

Born in Ashfield, Massachusetts, in 1826, William Smith Clark graduated from Amherst College in 1848 and went on to teach the natural sciences at Williston Seminary until 1850, when he continued his education abroad, studying chemistry and botany at the University of Goettingen, earning his Ph.D in 1852. From 1852 to 1867 he was a member of Amherst College’s faculty as a Professor of Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. As a leading citizen of Amherst, Clark was a strong advocate for the establishment of the new agricultural college, becoming one of the founding members of the college’s faculty and in 1867, the year the college welcomed its first class of 56 students, its President. During his presidency, he pressured the state government to increase funding for the new college and provide scholarships to enable poor students, including women, to attend. The college faced economic hardship early in its existence: enrollment dropped in the 1870s, and the college fell into debt. He is noted as well for helping to establish an agricultural college at Sapporo, Japan, and building strong ties between the Massachusetts Agricultural College and Hokkaido. After Clark was denied a leave of absence in 1879 to establish a “floating college” — a ship which would carry students and faculty around the world — he resigned.

The Clark Papers include materials from throughout his life, including correspondence with fellow professors and scientists, students in Japan, and family; materials relating to his Civil War service in the 21st Massachusetts Infantry; photographs and personal items; official correspondence and memoranda; published articles; books, articles, television, and radio materials relating to Clark, in Japanese and English; and materials regarding Hokkaido University and its continuing relationship with the University of Massachusetts.

Biographical Note

William Smith Clark was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts, July 31, 1826. He attended Williston Academy in Easthampton, Massachusetts, in the first class, that of 1844. He graduated from Amherst College in 1848 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. As a boy, he became interested in collecting birds and plants; at Amherst College, under the influence of the professors, he became greatly interested in science, especially mineralogy. As a result, he went to study in Germany, where he obtained his Ph.D. at Georgia Augusta University in Goettingen in 1852.

He returned to Amherst College to an appointment as a professor. For the next fifteen years, from 1852 to 1867, he was a member of the Amherst faculty, where he became known as an educational innovator, a fine and inspiring teacher, and a fund raiser for the college. His teaching at Amherst College was interrupted only by the Civil War, during which he served the Union Army with distinction from 1861 to 1863. Soon after his return from the war, he became the leader in the successful efforts by the town of Amherst to become the seat of a new agricultural college just authorized by the Massachusetts General Court under the provision of the Morrill Act, the “Land Grant Act” that established state agricultural and mechanical colleges throughout the United States. Just before the new Massachusetts Agricultural College opened its doors in September 1867, he was appointed president, the third to hold the title, the first two having no school over which to preside. He held the presidency of MAC for twelve years, until 1879.

Clark taught and administered the affairs of the struggling college. He insisted on making his school into a general liberal arts school, not simply a training school for farmers-to-be. Early in 1876, he obtained a leave of absence from MAC and accepted the appointment by the Japanese government to open a new agricultural college on the model of MAC. He went to Japan in the late spring and arrived on his fiftieth birthday in Sapporo, where he opened the Sapporo Agricultural College in mid-August. He remained there for eight and a half months, during which he established the school, taught four hours a day, served as the technical advisor to the island of Hokkaido, and paved the way for the conversion to Christianity of all the members of the first class. At SAC, he demonstrated anew his qualities as a fine teacher that had been revealed at both AC and MAC. He was a great inspiration to his students, all of whom became leaders in Hokkaido or nationally in Japan. As a result of his highly successful mission, his name remained well-known in Japan more than a century after his brief stay there. All Japanese school children since his time have learned as a motto his farewell statement, “Boys, be ambitious, (B.B.A.)”, since extended to students of both sexes.

On returning to MAC in 1877 he found that the school’s existence had become even more precarious than before. He resigned as president early in 1879 and accepted the presidency of an innovative “floating college” which was to circumnavigate the globe. However, the unfortunate premature death of the promoter brought that venture to an end shortly before the intended date of departure. Clark then became involved with a shady character with whom he founded the firm of Clark and Bothwell, a mining venture. Within a year Clark made and lost a considerable fortune. The collapse of the firm, with the disappearance of his partner, resulted in losses to the investors in the mines operated by the firm, including many citizens of Amherst.

Clark’s health failed immediately after the firm’s collapse in 1882 and he remained a semi-invalid until his death on March 9, 1886. Although he was a leading citizen of Amherst and prominent in the affairs of the Commonwealth, his fame has endured primarily in Japan.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The papers of William Smith Clark, 1814-2001 (bulk 1844-1886, 1956-1976), include correspondence with fellow professors and scientists, students in Japan, and family; photographs and personal items; official correspondence and memoranda; published articles; books, articles, television, and radio materials relating to Dr. Clark, in Japanese and English; and materials regarding Hokkaido University and its continuing relationship with the University of Massachusetts.

The papers reveal many details about the early days of MAC, student life at AC, the Civil War, the island of Hokkaido in the late nineteenth century, and the role of WSC in the founding of SAC, as well as his interactions with colleagues, officials, students, and family. As to full documentation of his life, however, the papers are an uneven representation. The correspondence, for example, adequately covers his undergraduate years at AC, his two years of graduate school in Germany, his less than two years at the front in the Civil War, and his year in Japan. Virtually nothing in the correspondence, however, deals with his years as a professor at AC, his presidency of MAC, his disastrous mining venture, or the final four years of his life.

Clark was not a prolific writer. Apart from his MAC and SAC presidential reports, his writings consisted largely of printed versions of lectures on botanical experiments carried out at MAC during his presidency, and articles on educational issues related to MAC.

Because of his AC career, his MAC presidency, and his prominence as a leading citizen of his town and state, his activities were given a fairly extensive coverage in the local press. A considerable number of newspaper clippings is included in the papers, but his political activities are not represented in other ways. The clippings are generally photocopies, often of poor legibility, especially those in oversize Box 27.

The photographs in Series 1 are numerous enough to be of significance in documenting the life of WSC.

As compared with the number of documents written or received by Clark, there is a disproportionately large amount of material written about him in both English and Japanese. This is a reflection of the breadth of the impact that Clark had on the island of Hokkaido, on SAC (which became Tohoku Imperial University, then Hokkaido Imperial University, and finally Hokkaido University), and on his Japanese students who became leaders in Hokkaido and Japan itself. Clark’s fame has long remained green in Japan, as indicated by the long television documentary on his life shown on a Japanese national network in 1981.

Because of WSC’s involvement with the establishment of SAC and the constant presence of MAC personnel on its campus in the early years, a close relationship between the two agricultural schools was established long ago. This relationship continued in both formal and informal ways through the years and is documented in the papers, particularly in Series 5.

The Clark papers include copies of a few items of correspondence and other materials at AC, and copies of WSC’s official memoranda in the Hokudai Library. The latter also has reproductions of all the original personal correspondence in the Clark papers at the University of Massachusetts.

History of the Collection

The papers of William Smith Clark (b. 1826, d. 1886), botanist, chemist, mineralogist, and educator, were acquired in part by the Library of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1974 by gift of the widow of Dr. Clark’s grandson, Mrs. William S. (Gladys) Clark II. Copies of original documents in the Amherst College Library and the Hokkaido University Library were acquired mainly in 1974-77. Materials about Dr. Clark and the Hokkaido University / University of Massachusetts relationship were acquired from Professors John Maki, Richard Woodbury, H. Leland Varley, and others. Some materials had long been in the University of Massachusetts Library.

Arrangement:

Series 1 is divided into three subseries: College, Military, and Other Biographical Records; Personal Association Items; and Photographs and Pictures.

Scope and content:

Series 1 consists of materials closely associated with the life of WSC, not including third-person biographical accounts, which are in Series 4. “Personal Association Items” are those for which there is evidence or a strong presumption of their having been in WSC’s possession.

The materials in Subseries 1: College, Military, and Other Biographical Records, include the Clark family record, apparently in WSC’s handwriting; his biographical form prepared for the AC alumni records; excerpts from books and records regarding WSC and family members (folder 1); his grandson WSC II’s AC graduation certificate (oversize Box 27); a number of obituaries, including one by UCHIMURA Kanzo, who was later to become a prominent Christian leader in Japan (folder 2); copies of WSC’s military service records and a letter from Major General A.E. Burnside to Major General George B. In the farewell picture WSC has tentatively been identified after careful analysis by AKIZUKI Toshiyuki, head of the Reference Division of the Hokudai Library, as the figure with the light colored hat on the horse second from the right.

The exhibition, “A Pictorial Life of Col. William Clark” was prepared by the Rev. ÅŒSAKA Shingo, the Japanese biographer of WSC. He wrote the narration which appears on the backs of the series of original paintings by SUNAGANE Takashi titled, “The Picture Story of Our Dr. William Smith Clark, from 1826-1876″, filed in oversize Box 28. This series of watercolors was part of ÅŒSAKA’s exhibit prepared to commemorate in Hokkaido the 1961 centennial of WSC’s going off to fight in the Civil War. It was displayed in the American Cultural Center in Sapporo and in many primary schools in Hokkaido.

The tree planting ceremony took place at the Clark Family plot in West Cemetery, Amherst, on May 18, 1973. The tree was a cherry descended from the one that Professor William Brooks, WSC’s student who joined him in Sapporo, brought back from Japan. It was presented by the late Professor William Colby, who served as a visiting professor at Hokkaido University in the early 1960s.

Housed with this collection, but not part of it, is the photograph album of G.A. Parker, Class of 1876, which includes additional photographs of WSC and his family, and the MAC campus at the time of WSC’s presidency. See RG 130/1876.

Series 2 consists of two broad categories of correspondence-personal, and official. The personal correspondence covers WSC’s student days at AC, his period of study in Europe, his service in the Civil War, his mission to Hokkaido, and his subsequent communications with his Japanese students and officials. The official correspondence deals with his mission to Hokkaido, and to a limited extent with his presidency of MAC. Much of the personal correspondence in the collection and the letters dealing with his MAC presidency are originals but are in fragile condition and therefore are available as photocopies to minimize handling. The photocopies are filed in Box 4; the originals owned by the University of Massachusetts Amherst are in Box 5. All photocopies in Box 4 for which UMass owns an original in Box 5, are designated by “(*)” on the container list. Those items which are photocopies of originals at Amherst College are designated by “(AC)” on the container list. The official correspondence dealing with Hokkaido consists of originals held by UMass and photocopies of originals in the possession of Hokudai. Photocopies from Hokudai originals are indicated by “(HU)” on the container list. Copies of official Hokkaido correspondence in the possession of UMass are in turn available at Hokudai. Copies of additional correspondence regarding Hokudai can be found in Special Collections and University Archives in the papers of William Wheeler (RG-2/3), David Penhallow (RG-50/6-1873) and Horace Stockbridge (RG- 40/11). What follows here is a general description of the items in Series 2. The Container List identifies each individual item. Folder 1 consists almost entirely of letters from WSC to members of his family while he was a student at AC. These letters provide insight into the happy family relations between him and his parents and his sister Harriet. His accounts of life as a student reveal a great deal about college life at AC. The most significant incident covered by these letters is his religious conversion, reported in a letter to his mother March 16, 1846. Folder 2 contains twenty-one letters dated 1850-1852, mostly to his parents and three sisters while WSC was in Europe. These are particularly valuable because of the detailed descriptions of what WSC observed both in England and in Germany. Folder 3 contains his honeymoon letter to his parents, dated May 30, 1853 from Charleston, Virginia, and two other letters. Folder 4 contains his Civil War letters to his family and Amherst friends. They reflect his shift in attitude towards war, from that of his early weeks in the army when he relished the glory and romance, to his final view that war is death, suffering, and hardship. These letters shed more light on his close family ties. Folder 5 contains a fragment of a letter to his father in 1865. Folder 6 contains the small number of letters dating from his presidency of MAC. About half of these letters relate to Japan and his mission to Hokkaido. The items most directly concerned with MAC are the two letters dealing with the junior class protest regarding selection of speakers for Commencement Week, 1872. Of interest is a request from Japanese ambassador YOSHIDA Kiyonari for WSC to speak in favor of treaty revision. Folders 7-12 contain official correspondence relating to Hokkaido, which has been organized chronologically as follows in order to illuminate the development and flow of WSC’s work: Folder 7. Duplicates of some of the photocopies of the official correspondence are filed in Box 24. An attempt was made to file the most legible copy in Box 4; particular words, however, might be clearer on the duplicate copy. See also folder 13, which contains typescripts of those letters from WSC to Japanese officials indicated by “(t)” on the Container List for folders 7-12. Folder 13 also includes typescripts of two letters (originals at HU) to students which are not represented by photocopies: WSC to Mr. Y. KUROIWA, March 11, 1879 from New York, and WSC to UCHIDA, December 25, 1883 in Amherst. The William Wheeler papers (RG-2/3) and WSC’s letters to his wife and children (folder 14) are excellent supplements to the official correspondence because of the additional information they provide on the voyage to Hokkaido and WSC’s operations with the Japanese in Hokkaido. Folder 14, as mentioned above, contains WSC’s correspondence with his family while he was in Hokkaido. These letters are valuable not only for the descriptions of WSC’s experiences and work in Hokkaido, but also for what they tell us of the warmth of his relationships with his wife and small children. The letters from WSC to his wife are typed copies which were presented to the University of Massachusetts Amherst by Mrs. William S. Clark II. Where the originals are and who copied them are unknown. Both the content and a careful comparison of the style of these copies and other WSC letters leave little doubt as to their authenticity. The folder of the photocopies includes typed transcripts of the two letters to brother-in-law William B. Churchill and to Sister Belle, as well. Folder 15 contains subsequent correspondence with Clark’s Japanese students and two of the officials WSC dealt with while in Hokkaido. These letters reveal the close ties that developed between WSC and his students. They contain, in addition to expressions of feeling, news about SAC and Hokkaido and many references to the students’ religious concerns. Folder 15a includes typescripts of all the letters in folder 15, as well as three additional ones, the originals of which are at HU. See also folder 13. Folder 16 contains miscellaneous items which do not fit well into any of the above categories. The most significant are the 1884 and 1885 letters (originals at HU) to William P. Brooks, the last known to have been written by WSC before his death in 1886. A letter from WSC’s son, Atherton, to MAC Secretary Robert Hawley in 1930 indicates that WSC’s papers were scattered or destroyed when the family home in Amherst was broken up. Folder 17 contains photographs of letters (originals at Doshisha) from WSC to Joseph NEESIMA, written between 1878-1882.

Scope and content: Series 3 consists of 20 items, most of which are published versions of public lectures delivered by WSC, a situation flowing naturally from the fact that he was famous as a lecturer. Three books are included: On Metallic Meteorites (folder 2), his doctoral dissertation published in 1852; his translation of Theodore Scheerer’s The Blowpipe Manual (folder 7), published in 1869; and Collected Papers of Dr. W.S. Clark (folder 17), edited and with a bibliography by YAMAMOTO Tamaki, Hokkaido University, published in 1993. “Report on Horses” (folder 3) was written while WSC was a professor at AC and was active in the Hampshire (County) Agricultural Society. The seven publications here from his MAC years, excluding The Blowpipe Manual, include four relating to his role as President and three which can be described as research papers. The four presidential writings are “The Work and the Wants of the College” (folder 4), “Rules for the Agricultural Department, MAC” (folder 5), “Professional Education the Present Want of Agriculture” (folder 8), and “The Relations of Botany to Agriculture” (folder 9). The three research papers are “The Circulation of Sap in Plants”, “Nature’s Mode of Distributing Plants”, and “Observations upon the Phenomena of Plant Life”. All of these publications illustrate the development of the scientific study of agriculture in the formative years of this land-grant school. The sap circulation study was a source of controversy. Although there is no contemporary account of it, the daughter of Professor Selim Peabody, then a MAC professor, wrote some years later that her father was responsible for the research and that WSC, as President, had simply placed his name on the report. “A Lecture on the Flow of Sap and the Power of Plant Growth”, found in WSC’s 12th Annual Report of the MAC, and “Observations upon the Phenomena of Plant Life” both include an account of the famous experiment which measured the power created by the growth of a giant squash. WSC’s own record of what he accomplished and observed in Japan is to be found in the “First Annual Report of Sapporo Agricultural College” (folder 14) and “The Agriculture of Japan” (folder 16). The latter demonstrated WSC’s powers of observation and reporting, also revealed in his correspondence. The “Covenant of Believers in Jesus” (copy in folder 15, original in oversize Box 27) was composed by WSC and signed by all of the students in the first freshman class at SAC. It is evidence of his success as an informal missionary, because it was a major step in the eventual baptism of the students, an event which took place several months after WSC’s departure from Japan. Related material: Not included are the annual reports of MAC which he wrote as President from 1867 to 1879. The annual reports may be found in the University Archives, RG 1/00/2 (also available online through the Special Collections and University Archives web site).

Series 4. Materials About William Smith Clark	1858-1996	11.5 boxes, 5.0 linear feet
Series 4 contains a wide variety of material touching on his life and work, and is divided into seven subseries. It includes correspondence about him, reminiscences and biographical sketches, books and articles about him, materials compiled for a biography, and audio-visual materials about his life. Box 7, folders 1-6, contain Subseries 1: Correspondence about WSC, the bulk of which (folders 2-5) is dated 1940 or later and provides little fresh information about WSC. The most significant letter is that by Dr. MIYABE Kingo (folder 1) on the plans for a Clark memorial church in Sapporo. Folder 6 contains material relating to the William Smith Clark Association, an informal group made up of Amherst residents, mostly from the University of Massachusetts, who were concerned with Amherst’s relations with Hokkaido and HU. It was created mainly to plan the UMass contributions to the celebration of the Hokudai centennial (and, of course, the centennial of WSC’s mission to Hokkaido) in 1976. Boxes 8 and 9 contain Subseries 2: Reminiscences and Biographical Sketches. Many of the items listed contain only brief references to WSC, which contribute little to an understanding of him but do reveal the extent to which he became and has remained well known in Japan. The most valuable items include reminiscences by WSC’s son Atherton (folder 12); the writings of MIYABE (folder 29), ÅŒSHIMA (folder 33), and Bowker (folder 10), all former students; and the article by David P. Penhallow (folder 35). The article, “Boys, Be Ambitious” from the New Prince English Course, 1981 (folder 31), a middle school textbook used nationally in Japan, shows how WSC is remembered more than a century after his mission to Hokkaido. Boxes 10 and 11 contain Subseries 3: Books, which deal wholly or in part with the life of WSC. Brief comments on some of the principal titles are given below: KurÄku Sensei Shoden [Life of Dr. Clark], by ÅŒSAKA Shingo, Sapporo 1956 (folder 53), is the definitive biography in Japanese by the man who was the foremost Japanese authority on WSC. This long biography was written without the benefit of access to much material which became available after its publication. KurÄku Sensei to Sono Deshitachi [Dr. Clark and his Students], by ÅŒSHIMA Masatake, 1943 (folder 54), is of value because its author was one of WSC’s students at SAC. KurÄku no ichinen (Clark’s Year) [on verso of t.p.: The Japanese Experience of William Smith Clark], by ÅŒTA YÅ«zÅ, Tokyo, 1979 (folder 55), written by a McGill University history professor, consists primarily of translations of Clark’s letters to his family at Sapporo that are found in Series 2. Foreign Pioneers from the Hokkaido Prefectural Government, 1968 (folder 47-48), contains brief biographies of a number of foreigners, the majority Americans, who played roles in the early development of Hokkaido. KurÄku: Sono EikÅ to Zasetsu [Clark: His Glory and Collapse], by John Maki, translated by TAKAKU Shin’ichi, Hokkaido University Press, 1978 (folder 51),was published in English in 1996 as William Smith Clark: A Yankee in Hokkaido. See Boxes 12 and 13. Boxes 12 and 13 contain Subseries 4: John Maki Manuscript, WSC: A Yankee in Hokkaido which includes a photocopied typescript of William Smith Clark: A Yankee in Hokkaido by John Maki; the author’s account of how he came to write it; and a J.F. Howes review of the book from The American Historical Review. It is the only book length biography of Clark in English. Box 14 contains Subseries 5: Background Materials for Maki Biography of WSC. The materials, compiled by John Maki for use in writing William Smith Clark: A Yankee in Hokkaido, consist primarily of photocopies and transcriptions of sections of books, and articles, booklets, and newspaper clippings. Box 15 contains Subseries 6: Notes for Maki Biography of WSC, which consists of twelve envelopes of handwritten and typed notes on 4 x 6 index cards, compiled by John Maki for writing his biography of WSC. The materials in Boxes 14 and 15 are particularly useful with regard to WSC’s presidency of MAC, his early contacts with Japanese students in Amherst, the floating college, and WSC’s mining venture. Boxes 16-18 contain Subseries 7: Television, Radio, and Other Audio Visual Materials. The major item is a videotape of a television program broadcast on a Japanese national network on November 3, 1981 (Culture Day, a Japanese national holiday). There are three different video cassettes (VHS, Beta, and 3/4 inch videotape cassettes) of Taishi to YabÅ: William Smith Clark no ShÅgai (Ideals and Ambition: The Life of William Smith Clark) (folders 76-78). Also included are the Japanese language script of the program (folder 80); Taishi to YabÅ: William Smith Clark no Ashiato o Tazunete (Ideals and Ambition: In the Footsteps of William Smith Clark), which is a book length account, including much of the life of WSC, of the making of the program by the TV crew that filmed it (folder 81); “The Filming in Amherst of the Japanese Television Documentary on the Life of William Smith Clark” by John Maki (folder 82); and correspondence and clippings relating to the program (folders 83-85). Other materials in Subseries 7 include an audiotape of a radio interview of John Maki on WSC, an audiotape and a silent film of the tree-planting ceremony at the Clark family grave on May 18, 1973, and videotapes regarding the Massachusetts / Hokkaido Sister State relationship and the WCS Memorial.

Series 5. Hokkaido University-University of Massachusetts Relations	1877-2003 (bulk 1956-1976)	6 boxes, 3.0 linear feet
Arrangement: Series 5 is divided into three subseries: Chronological Record, Summer Seminar 1974, and Books on HU. Scope and content: Subseries 1: Chronological Record, consists of materials which document the continuing relations of SAC / MAC from the time of Clark’s presence in Japan through the growth of each school into a university. The materials reflect exchanges, both formal and informal; influences, especially that of Massachusetts professors on SAC/HU; gifts, visits, and honors through correspondence and memoranda; typescript and printed articles; clippings, press releases, and brochures; mementos, photographs, and pictures; and prepared lists. In Subseries 2: Summer Seminar 1974, the experience of the seminar is revealed through the journal of Professor Richard Woodbury, as well as in the schedules, lecture notes, participant evaluations, photographs, travel arrangements, souvenirs, memoranda, and printed materials. Subseries 3: Books on HU, includes early annual reports, 1877-1879; histories of HU in English and Japanese; HU catalogs, 1921-1922 and 1936-1937; a catalog of the holdings in the SAC library, 1888; lists of plants in the HU Botanical Garden; and other books.
