How do I arrange a class visit?

Classes from UMass Amherst and many other schools in the region meet regularly in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives to make use of the unique collections under our care. Members of the SCUA staff are glad to provide basic introductions to archival research, overviews of specific areas of historical interest, information about the collections, discussions of the history of UMass Amherst. In recent years, the staff have hosted classes from history and American culture, African American studies, English and comparative literature, art history, anthropology, and library and information science, among other disciplines.

SCUA staff are also available to help individual students plan or conduct research, and we welcome inquiries from students interested in internships in archival and library studies.

To avoid conflicts and to help us prepare for class visits, the SCUA staff request advance notice, with an indication of how many students will be expected, their research interests (if relevant), and how long the class is expected to last. In most cases, a week’s prior notice is sufficient. Individual appointments with students can be arranged at any time.

Accommodations

The Amherst-Northampton area has a number of options for researchers needing a place to stay. The closest is the Campus Center Hotel, which is in fact located at the center of campus, adjacent to a parking garage and only a few hundred yards from the library. UMass Amherst maintains a webpage listing other options for local accommodation.

Tours

The SCUA staff are happy to provide tours of the facilities or collections at any time during normal business hours or by special appointment.
