During the early days of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, a Political Science Department was organized for a brief period, before being renamed the History and Government Department in 1915. Over the next four decades the department and its faculty were housed either with the history or economics departments until 1953 when it once again was designated as a separate discipline in the form of the Government Department. During the rapid growth period of the 1960s-1970s the department thrived, and its faculty and student body more than doubled. It was during this period that the department transformed one final time resulting in the Political Science Department (1972/1973) that continues to exist today.
