This guide describes how to conduct astronomy research using the UMass Amherst Library Catalog and other academic library catalogs. To sample major astronomy subjects, click the pre-run subject searches at the bottom of this guide.

UMass Amherst Library Catalog

The UMass Amherst Library Catalog indexes items owned and licensed by the UMass Amherst Libraries including books, journals, microfilms, government publications, music scores, archives, and online databases. Search the Library Catalog by subject, title, author or keyword. For recent book receipts, go to the New Books in Astronomy guide.

Other Library Catalog

To expand your research to other academic library collections, try these library catalogs:

  • Four College Catalog. Search the collections at Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges.
  • Virtual Catalog. Search Massachusetts pubic and academic library catalogs.
  • WorldCat. Search the combined holdings of 7,000 libraries in the U.S. and Canada.

Understanding Library Call Numbers

Each Library Catalog record contains a citation and call number. Call numbers consist of an alphanumeric string of letters and numbers (e.g., QB843.B55.D43). Call numbers correspond to a specific floor location in the Integrated Sciences & Engineering Library. Some astronomy books may be held at the W.E.B. Du Bois Library. The Library uses the Library of Congress Classification System to assign call numbers and to organize the collection.
