how to conduct astronomy research using the UMass Amherst Library
Catalog and other academic library catalogs. To sample major astronomy

The
UMass Amherst Library Catalog
indexes items owned and licensed by the UMass Amherst Libraries including
books, journals, microfilms, government publications, music scores, archives,
and online databases. Search the Library Catalog by subject,
title, author
or keyword. For

Books in Astronomy guide.
To expand
your research to other academic library collections, try these library
catalogs:
- Four
College Catalog. Search the collections at Amherst, Smith, Mount
Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges.
- Virtual
Catalog. Search Massachusetts pubic and academic library catalogs.
- WorldCat.
Search the combined holdings of 7,000 libraries in the U.S. and Canada.

| Understanding
Library Call Numbers |
Each Library Catalog
record contains a citation and call number. Call numbers consist of an
alphanumeric string of letters and numbers (e.g., QB843.B55.D43).
Call numbers correspond to a specific floor location in the Integrated
Sciences & Engineering Library. Some astronomy books may be held at
the W.E.B. Du Bois Library. The Library uses the
Library of Congress Classification System to assign call numbers and
to organize the collection.
