Astronomy Research Guide
 
Welcome to the Astronomy Research Guide

The Astronomy Research Guide lists the best library resources for any line of astronomy research. Use this guide to study topics in astronomy or astrophysics, including high energy astrophysics, star formation, interstellar medium, cometary science, galactic structure, and cosmology.

Astronomy Collection Orientation


The astronomy collection is located at the Integrated Sciences and Engineering Library (ISEL), second floor, Lederle Graduate Research Center (Lowrise). The Library is open daily each semester. For reference assistance, visit or call the Reference Desk (413-545-6741), or use the Ask a Librarian email service.
  • Books to Borrow. Use the UMass Amherst Library Catalog to search for astronomy books. The astronomy book collection is located on the first floor of ISEL at call number QB.

  • Databases. Use the Database Guide to view astronomy database holdings. Databases are licensed for on-campus access by all and remote access by OIT Account holders. Workstations are available at ISEL.

  • Journals in Electronic Format. Use the Electronic Journal Locator to identify online journal holdings. To search for journal articles by subject, select a database from the guide to Articles, Journals, Periodicals.

  • Journals in Print Format. Use the Library Catalog to locate astronomy journals by title. Current year journals are located on the second floor of ISEL (entry level). Earlier years are located on the third floor.

  • Reference Collection. The astronomy reference collection is located on the second floor of ISEL at call number Ref QB. For assistance, visit the Reference Desk (413-545-6741), or use the Ask a Librarian email service.

For help with astronomy research, contact Paulina Borrego. Students are invited to request help with class assignments, research projects, and thesis preparation. Services for faculty include reference and research services, database tutorials, and the integration of databases into class assignments and reading lists.
