Artificial Satellite Missions

Use this guide to study artificial satellite missions throughout the Solar System. Learn about voyages to asteroids, comets, planets and to the Keiper Belt - at the very edge of the Solar System. The guide lists the best print and online library resources for the study of artificial satellites. It includes a historical bibliography and links to current and future planetary satellite missions. To study Earth satellite missions, visit the NASA Earth Observing System. For help, call the Integrated Science and Engineering Library at 545-6741 or use the Ask A Librarian reference service for online assistance.

Historical Bibliography

The Library provides access to full-text online articles from premier science publishers - including Elsevier, Thomson ISI, and the American Chemical Society. For a quick overview of satellite development, review the five online articles listed below. To view all astronomy journals received in electronic format, go to the Guide to Online Astronomy Journals. To search for articles on planetary science by subject, read the section below called Journal Articles and Reports.

Library Catalogs

The UMass Library Catalog indexes items owned and licensed by the UMass Amherst Libraries. Use the Library Catalog to locate books on any aspect of satellite development. To expand your research to other libraries, search these catalogs: Four College Catalog, Virtual Catalog (most Massachusetts libraries), or WorldCat - the combined holdings of 7,000 libraries. To sample major planetary science subjects, click the following pre-run Catalog subject searches:

Electronic Books

The Library's subscription to NetLibrary provides online access to more than 7,000 full-text electronic books. NetLibrary contains popular and scholarly books on all topics. Click the following titles to view electronic books on planets and planetary research. For additional e-book research, search the NetLibrary collection.

Reference Collection

The planetary science reference collection is located in the Integrated Science & Engineering Library (map). The collection contains atlases and encyclopedias on planets, space flight history, and space technology. Use the call number listed with each citation to find the correct shelf location.
