  • Career Reference Collection. Browse the Library's career reference collection in the Reference Department (Main Floor, Du Bois Library) at the call number range Ref. HF5000 - HF5400.
  • Library Journal Databases. Search any of the Library journal databases listed in Section 5 for articles about careers.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook. Profiles hundreds of careers. Describes working conditions, employment, training, job outlook, and earnings. Located at the Reference Desk - Ref. HF5381.U62 and online at www.bls.gov/oco/.
  • Career Guide to Industries. (In Reference Collection, Call # Ref. HF5382.5.U5.C316). Occupational profiles by industry.
  • Choosing a career in hotels, motels, and resorts, by Nancy N. Rue. This is an electronic book available through the Library's NetLibrary database. Click the title then select Browse this eBook online.
2. Industry Reports and Surveys...<Top>



Industry reports provide valuable information on an industry's background, structure, current conditions, workforce size, and global competition. Use industry reports to identify industry strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and trends.

  • Business & Company Resource Center. Click Advanced Search, then select Industry Overviews from the drop-down menu.
  • ISI Emerging Markets (for industries in other countries). Select a country, then click the Industry Navigation tab at top.
  • Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage. Click the Industry Navigation button at the top of the screen, then select an industry from the listing.
  • STAT-USA (for industries in other countries). Click GLOBUS/NTDB. Check links under Market and Country Research category.

    Note: Here are the U.S. Department of Commerce industry classification codes for hospitality industries. The U.S. government uses the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS).

  • The Career Guide - D&B Employment Opportunities Directory. (In Reference Collection, Call # Ref. HF5382.5.U5.D86). Designed for recent college graduates seeking first career position. Describes employer training and career opportunities.
  • Plunkett's Airline, Hotel, and Travel Industry Almanac (In Reference Collection, Call # Ref. G155.A1.P59). Reports on the state of the industry, plus profiles hospitality companies.
  • Hotel & Travel Index (at Reference Desk, Call # Ref. TX907.H59). 50,000 hotels and resorts organized by country.
  • Almanac of American Employers (In Reference Collection, Call # Ref. HF5382.75.U6.A45). Complete guide to the hottest, fastest-growing major corporations.

    Database Resources

  • Dun & Bradstreet's Million Dollar Database. Directory listings of 1,600,000 U. S. and Canadian leading public and private businesses with sales greater than $5 million or employee total greater than 100. Search by name, location, industry, or size.
  • ReferenceUSA. Directory listing of 12 million U.S. commercial and nonprofit organizations. Search and sort by multiple criteria. Link to parent or subsidiary. Locate businesses of any size or type - anywhere in the United States.
4. Companies Reports and Company Histories...<Top>
  • Hoovers Company Reports. Go to ABI/Inform Global and select Hoover's Company Capsules from the database drop-down menu.
  • Business & Company Resource Center. Locate company histories and corporate chronologies. Click the Company icon on the opening screen, and type a company name. Locate the company profile from Results list, then click the Histories tab at the top of the screen.
  • Mergent Online. Annual reports for all U.S. public companies and for public companies worldwide.
5. Journal Articles about Companies...<Top>

Bring your company research up-to-date by reviewing trade journal articles. Trade journals are industry-specific news publications. The Library databases listed below provide large collections of full-text trade journal articles.

6. Trade and Professional Associations...<Top>

Trade associations promote the products and services of a particular industry, and provide marketing and research services for member companies. Examine trade association websites to gain insight into industry trends and strategy.
