MGMT 314: Human Resource Assignment

Use this guide to locate journal articles for the MGMT 314 human resource assignment. The guide focuses on a Library database called ABI/Inform Global because of its emphasis on academic and practitioner journals. To expand your research to additional journal databases, review the guide to Articles, Journals, Periodicals. For more help, contact Mike Davis at 413-545-6822 or request a research consultation.

ABI/Inform Global Overview...<Top>

ABI/Inform Global provides academic and practitioner articles from 1,600 leading business journals published worldwide. Coverage: 1971 to present, plus 100 leading scholarly journals from the early 20th century to present. To learn more about the scope and coverage of this database, review the ABI/INFORM Title List.

Locate Journal Articles by Subject...<Top>

Journal article research by subject heading provides the most accurate and precise search results. Follow the steps to locate articles by ABI/Inform subject heading:

  1. Connect to ABI/INFORM Global.
  2. Select the Subject option from the drop-down menu to the right of the top search box.
  3. Then click the Browse Subjects link that appears to the right of the drop-down menu.
  4. A new window will open that lists all ABI/Inform subject headings. Type your subject (one word or phrase) in the Browse Subjects search box, and then click the yellow Find Term search button.
  5. ABI/Inform will guide you to the correct subject heading and also list additional relevant subject headings. Once you have selected a subject heading, click the yellow Add to Search button.
  6. You may repeat this procedure to add more subject headings, or click the yellow Search button to submit your search query.

Search Example: salaries and blue collar workers (in the subject field). This search retrieved 162 articles including this article from Industrial and Labor Relations Review, A living wage: Workers and the making of consumer society.

Locate Journal Articles by Keyword...<Top>

If subject searching fails to locate relevant results, search more broadly by keywords in the title, abstract or full-text.

  1. Connect to ABI/INFORM Global.
  2. Select one of the following keyword search options from the drop-down menu to the right of the search box:
  • Citation and Abstract: Searches for keyword(s) in the title, abstract, and subject headings (this is the default search setting).
  • Abstract: Searches for keyword(s) in article abstracts. ABI/Inform provides abstracts up to 75 words in length.
  • Article Title: Searches for keywords in article titles.
  • Article Text: The broadest search--searches for keyword(s) anywhere in the full-text of articles.

Search Example: working poor and wages and family (keyword search in the Citation and Abstract field). This search retrieved 15 articles including this article from The Worklife Report, The living wage: New life for an old concept.

Locate Journal Articles within a Specific Journal...<Top>

To browse all articles in a specific journal or to search by topic within a specific journal follow these steps:

  1. Connect to ABI/INFORM Global.
  2. Click the green Publication Search tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Type a journal title in the Publication Search box or click a letter below the search box to view journals alphabetical by title.
