MGMT 697: Stock and Investment Assignment


Use this guide to locate library resources for the MGMT 697 stock and investment assignment. Sources types provided include journal articles, annual reports, SEC filings, industry surveys, stock reports, company histories, company announcements, executive interviews, executive biographies and market share rankings. Company Selection Tool

To help you locate a target company for your research, use the Advanced Search mode of the Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage database. Follow these steps to search all U.S. public companies by multiple search criteria:

  1. Connect to Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage and click the Company button on the top banner.
  2. Select the Advanced Search option on the Company Research page.
  3. Click the Select Publication drop-down menu and choose one or more of these titles: Stock Reports, Corporation Records, or Register of Public Companies. Each title offers different search options.
  4. Use the Search For drop-down menus below to filter public companies by one or more criteria.


Databases for Stock and Investment Research
ABI/INFORM Global (journal articles)...<Top>

 

Journal articles from 1,600 leading business and management journals published worldwide. Coverage: 1971 to present, plus 100 leading scholarly journals from the early 20th century to present. Review the ABI/INFORM Title List.

  1. Connect to ABI/INFORM Global.
  2. Type the company name in the first search box and select Company from the drop-down menu.
  3. To combine a company search with a subject search, select Subject from the second drop-down menu and search one or more of these these ABI subject headings:
  • corporate planning
  • corporate objectives
  • decision making
  • executives
  • leadership
  • long term planning
  • management decisions
  • strategic management
  • strategic planning

Search Example. Sample search statement: dell (in the company field) and strategic planning (in the subject field). This search retrieved 89 articles including this article from Forbes entitled Pulled in a New Direction.

Journal articles, company profiles, corporate chronologies and histories, investment reports, press releases, market share rankings, industry surveys, and links to key trade associations. Coverage: 1980 to present. Review the database Title List.

  1. For trade journal articles, click the Articles Icon.
  2. For industry reports, click the Advanced Search Icon and select Industry Overviews from the drop-down menu. Then search by industry keyword. Sample industry report
  3. For company histories, click the Advanced Search Icon and select Histories from the drop-down menu. Sample company history.
LexisNexis Academic (newspapers, executive interviews and biographies, company announcements)...<Top>

 

U.S. and foreign daily newspapers, trade publications, newsletters, news wires, radio/TV news transcripts, company financial reports, polls and surveys, state and country profiles, state and federal laws, and court decisions. Coverage: Generally from the early 1990s to present. Review the LexisNexis Title List.

  1. For daily newspaper articles, select US News from the top drop-down menu, then select a region.
  2. For executive interviews, select News Transcripts from the top drop-down menu, then select All Transcripts from the second drop-down menu.
  3. For executive biographies, select Reference from the left navigation column, then Biographical Information.
  4. For company announcements, select News Wires from the first drop-down menu.
Mergent Online (annual reports, SEC documents, financial chronologies) ...<Top>


Company reports for 11,000 US public companies and 17,000 non-U.S. companies representing 90% of the world's market capitalization. Also includes SEC filings (e.g., 10-K, 10-Q, Proxy), and (glossy) annual reports to stockholders. Coverage: SEC filings from 1993 to present. Annual Reports from 1997 to present.

  1. Connect to Mergent Online.
  2. For financial data, financial chronologies, or annual reports, type company name or ticker symbol in the Basic Search box. Select content types from the tabs at the top of the results screen.
  3. For SEC documents, click the EDGAR Search Tab at the top of the opening screen. Expand the default time period coverage (90 days) to one or more years (use the In this Range date boxes under Filing Date Search).
Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage (industry surveys, stock reports)...<Top>


Ten full text Standard & Poor's publications including the S&P Industry Surveys, Bond Guide, Corporation Records, Dividend Record, Earnings Guide, Mutual Fund Reports, The Outlook, Register of Corporations, Stock Guide, and Stock Reports. Coverage: Daily updates.

  1. For S&P Industry Surveys, click Industries on the top banner.
  2. For S&P Stock Reports, select stock reports from the Getting Started drop-down menu (left column).
TableBase (market share data, business and product rankings)...<Top>

 

Data tables from over 1,000 business journals, statistical annuals, brokerage reports, trade association reports, and government documents. Full articles accompany most tables. Coverage: 1997 to present.

  1. Connect to TableBase.
  2. For a broad search, type keywords in the Words and Phrases search box.
  3. For a narrow search, type keywords in the Words in Title search box.
  4. To search without using keywords, select Concepts, Marketing Terms, Industries, or Products from the drop-down menus.
Wall Street Journal (all WSJ articles from 1889 to present)...<Top>

Full text Wall Street Journal articles with multiple indexes and up to 75 word abstracts for each article. Coverage: 1889 to present.

  1. Connect to the Wall Street Journal.
  2. The Wall Street Journal database uses the same search interface as ABI/INFORM Global (Proquest). Use the ABI search strategy described above.
