Library Catalogs

UMass Amherst Library Catalog
Search for books, journals and other materials in different ways (author, title, subject, keyword, call number, journal title, etc.). For materials on a specific subject, enter your term(s) into the Subject or Keyword search boxes. Library of Congress Subject Headings (Z695.L695+) located near the Reference Desk suggests search terms or headings. See Topics in Communication for relevant subject headings in communication

Other Library Catalogs
To expand your research to other libraries try the following catalogs. Ways to obtain materials not owned by UMass Amherst Libraries.

Four College Catalog
Search the Library Catalog of Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and Amherst.

Virtual Catalog
Search the library catalogs of many academic libraries and Massachusetts public libraries simultaneously.

WorldCat (off-campus access restricted to UMass Amherst students, faculty and staff with an OIT account)
Search the catalogs of thousands of libraries around the world.

CW/MARS Catalog
Contains records for the materials of public, academic, school, regional, and special libraries in Central and Western Massachusetts.

Call Numbers

Materials in the Library are arranged according to the Library of Congress classification system. Each item in the Library is given a unique identifier--a string of specific letters and numbers based on the subject. View an example of how to read a call number.

Information on communication can be found primarily in the 'P91' call number area. As an interdisciplinary field, however, material relevant to communication can be found in other areas as well, like sociology at 'HM,' political science at 'JK,' psychology at 'BF,' and satellite broadcasting technology at 'TK'. See the Library Directory for a directory of stack floors and call numbers.
