At UMass Amherst the OIT labs have done the initial setup for
Windows
2000. When you log in you will need to complete the setup by adding
your
"input locale". Do this by going to Start -> Accessories ->
Regional Options
-> Input Locales. Add Chinese PRC Ms Pinyin 98 for Chinese and the
MS IME
for Japanese.
Telnet software was the way most people used to search the library catalog before Netscape and Internet Explorer came along. It is faster than using a WebOPAC, but requires special software.PRE Windows 2000/XP: If you want to type (search) in Chinese using telnet software on a PC, you usually need a FEP (front-end processing) software to be able to search such as UnionWay, NJStar or Twinbridge. Open the FEP and then any one of the following telnet programs: EWAN, Simpnet, Anziowin, Windows telnet.
AnzioWin 12.6 is able to display and
print
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters if you use the login for
Unicode,
even on Windows 95/98/NT computers. If you are using Windows 2000 or
XP,
you can also type in CJK.
There are 3 settings that need to be changed in the Anzio software:
Communicate -> Character Set for Screen = UTF8
Communicate -> Character Set for Passthrough
Print
= UTF8
Edit -> Advanced Options -> General ->
Character
Set for Output
MAC USERS: Please download MacBlue Telnet software onto your computer. This is Chinese software that also includes Japanese hiragana and katakana. It does not display Korean hangul, though. You may also use NCSA Telnet software set to a traditional Chinese language font.
