Library Course Guide for International Education
Introduction
This guide is arranged in the order that one might work through the research
process. However, if you would like to go to a particular area, choose from
the alphabetical grouping below.

Locate background information on your topic by using the Library
Catalog. You can do a search and restrict the search to reference materials:

Please note: The "Ref" before the call number indicates an item in the Reference Collection.
Encyclopedias: It is often a good idea to begin your review of the literature by consulting the following encyclopedias on the main floor of the library.

Search for books in the Library
Catalog.
A. Use the Online Library Catalog (http://www.library.umass.edu/cgi-bin/aka/babel.cgi?dokma=http://umlibr.library.umass.edu) and search by Subject to locate books in a particular area. For example:
Comparative Education; College Students; Cross Cultural Studies; Education-Chile Education Higher Africa; China Economic Conditions; Industry and Education; Education, Rural; Developing Countries- Education; Multicultural Education; Education and State Argentina
B. Tips:
1. It is possible to search by keyword to combine various terms
2. After you have entered a search Limit the search by typing L and choosing
options.
3. Books in Education usually begin with a call number L and will be found on
floor 20.
NOTE: By adding * after part of a word the system will retrieve all words beginning with the word you type, i.e. Teach* retrieves Teach, Teacher, Teachers, Teaching
C. Other Resources for Locating Books
Databases
Locate citations, abstracts and/or full text of journal articles,
magazine articles, newspapers, dissertations, government documents, and other
information sources in your subject.
These may be accessed in the libraries, via the Databases by Title List http://www.library.umass.edu/research/bytitletxt.html or in other ways. Below is a list of some that may be of interest to you. Locating Materials within the Libraries
After you have the citation
for your material (from a database, library catalog etc.) find the call
number. If not available in the database or index you are using go to the
Library Catalog.
If this library doesn't own the material you want, try searching for an item from the Four College Catalog, or fill out an Interlibrary Loan Request Form with the appropriate citation information. Staff will attempt to locate and bring the material here for you to use.
- Government Documents (on the 6th floor) for Education documents and information from various governmental agencies. See also their internet sites (http://www.library.umass.edu/subject/govdoc.edu)
- UNESCO PUBLICATIONS The Du Bois library maintains a standing order for UNESCO publications which are cataloged and can be found by consulting the Online Library Catalog.
- OECD PUBLICATIONS-- Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The Du Bois library maintains a standing order for OECD publications which are catalogued and can be found in the Online Library Catalog.
- SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLANS
A. The library owns a microfiche collection of national development plans from countries all over the world, including developing nations.
B. A guide in the microforms room lists the plans alphabetically by country and refers the user to the appropriate microfiche number- PHI DELTA KAPPA FASTBACKS This series of booklets coversmany aspects of current topics in education. Check the 20th floor, call number area: LB5 F37. There are over 400 titles in this collection.

The Research Process (an introduction)
- Getting Started with Research - Learn about some very basic research tools and when they are appropriate.
- Merlin Information Literacy Tutorial - In-depth tutorial on the library research process, including evaluation and citation of information sources.
- Citation Linker - If you have an article title or author, a journal title or ISSN, and a date for a source, this tool will help you locate it.
- RefWorks Citation Manager -Collect, store, and organize citations from books, articles, web sites, and other sources. RefWorks automatically converts citations into properly formatted bibliographies.
