II. FINDING BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY

A. Use the Library Catalog (http://www.library.umass.edu/cgi-bin/aka/babel.cgi?dokma=http://umlibr.library.umass.edu/) and search by Subject  to locate books in a particular area. For example: Lesson planning; Pedagogy; Curriculum planning Cognition in children; Group work in education; Education secondary curricula; Classroom management; Activity programs in education; Creative activities and seat work; Student teaching; Afro Americans study and teaching; Mathematics study and teaching;

Tip: After you have entered a search Limit the search  and choose from the  options.

B. It is also possible to search by Keyword  to combine various terms. For example: Lesson plan* English; Math and instruction*; Teach* and handbook* ;Education and handbook*; Education and module*; Secondary Education curriculum

Note: By adding * after part of a word the system will retrieve all words beginning with the word you type, i.e. Teach* retrieves Teach, Teacher, Teachers, Teaching.

C. Books in Education usually begin with a call number L and will be found on floor 20.

D. Finding Lesson Plans other than in Books or Journals

III. RETRIEVING EDUCATION DOCUMENTS AND JOURNALS

A. ERIC -Choose  from the Database Selection on the Library Home Page (http://www.library.umass.edu) or go directly to OVID at this link. . There are helpsheets for OVID.   Sample terms may be: Lesson-plans; Lesson-planning; Units-of-study; Curriculum guides; Resource units; Activity-units Learning-Modules;

Combine the above terms with an area of interest. For example: Lesson plans and science and secondary-education · To retrieve ERIC documents (ED number on top) go to the microforms room · To retrieve journals (EJ number on top) check the Library Catalog (http://www.library.umass.edu/cgi-bin/aka/babel.cgi?dokma=http://umlibr.library.umass.edu/) for call number

B. Also consult Government Documents on the 6th floor for Education documents and information from the Department of Education.

• Use either print or electronic indexes to locate articles related to your topic.
• Write down or print out the citations (Name and author of article, journal name, volume number, issue number, date...) 
• Get the call number from the Library Catalog (http://www.library.umass.edu/cgi-bin/aka/babel.cgi?dokma=http://umlibr.library.umass.edu/)
• Journals from 1995 to the present will usually be on the second floor. Consult the Pink Guide to the Library for location of earlier years.
